thread

Twenty-one years ago, in June of 2000,
I visited Okinawa for the first time.

As soon as I stepped out of the air-conditioned Naha Airport terminal building, the heat and humidity hit me.

It was a moment when I felt with my whole body that this was a tropical country, different from the mainland Japan.

I was welcomed by my friend Pastor O, and stayed with him and his family for about a week at his church building in Urasoe City.

This was the first time I learned that there was an anniversary of the end of the battle in Okinawa, and I also saw and heard about the horrific war that had been fought there involving the general population.

The cornerstone of peace monuments stands on the hill of Mabuni.
The names of Pastor O's relatives who were victims of the war are engraved on it.

Even nursing students and junior high school students were mobilized to fight in the battle and live in caves as evacuees and hospitals.

The sad history of Okinawa was not just a story of the past, but an experience that came close to my heart.

Okinawa celebrated "Memorial Day" on June 23.

On this day, a memorial service for the war dead was held at the Peace Memorial Park in Mabuni, Itoman City, on the day when the systematic fighting of the Battle of Okinawa ended 73 years ago, in which more than 200,000 people were killed in both Japan and the U.S., and a quarter of the people of Okinawa lost their lives.
At the ceremony, Michiko Sagara, 14, a junior high school student at Minagawa Junior High School in Urasoe City, recited a poem of peace.

I will introduce that poem as fellow.
thanks for the App. for help of the translations.

“I am alive, stepping on the earth that carries the heat of the mantle, receiving the pleasant humid wind, feeling the smell of grass in my nostrils, and listening to the distant sound of the tide.

I am alive now.
How beautiful is this island where I live.
The shining blue sea, the waves splashing against the rocks, the neighing of goats, the murmuring of the stream, the paths leading to the fields, the green of the mountains sprouting up, the gentle sound of the sanshin (Okinawan guitar), the rays of the sun.

What a beautiful island I was born and raised on.

I feel the island with all my senses and sensitivity. My heart slowly heats up.
I am living in this moment.
The splendor of this moment, the loveliness of this moment, becomes the peace of the present, and it spreads through me.
How can I express this feeling that is so irresistible?

The precious now, the irreplaceable now, the now in which I live.

73 years ago, the day my beloved island turned into an island of death. The chirping of birds turned into screams of fear.
The gentle sound of the sanshin (Okinawan guitar) was lost in the roar of the bombing.
The blue sky was obscured by the iron rain.
The smell of grass became muddy with the stench of death, and the surface of the sea, once shining with light, was filled with battleships.
Flames spewed from flamethrowers, the cries of infants, burned-out houses, and the smell of gunpowder.

The earth shaking from the impact of the bombs. The sea stained with blood. People transformed like evil spirits of mountains and rivers. Memories of fierce battles with screaming and snarling.
Everyone was yet alive.

They were no different from me, living their lives to the fullest. Their lives, their futures. I envisioned them without a doubt.
They had families, friends, lovers. They had jobs. I had a purpose in life.

We rejoiced in the small happiness of each day. They were human beings, just like me, living hand in hand.
And yet... They were destroyed and taken away from me.
We lived in different times. Just because of that. Innocent lives. Those days that they used to live as a matter of course.

The hill of Mabunin. The calm sea below.
Everything about this island, sad and unforgettable.
I hold my hands tightly and swear. Thinking of the lives that were taken. I swear from my heart.
As long as I live, I will never forgive the war that has cost so many lives.

I will never let the past become the future again.
I pledge that I will never allow war, which has cost so many lives, not make the past the future again.

To create a world in which life can be lived, in which life can be cherished, and in which no one can violate it.
We must be willing to make the effort to create peace.

You will feel it. You see the beauty of this island.
You know it. You know the sadness of this island.
And you, like me, are living in this moment together.
We are living in the present together.
So you must understand.
The meaninglessness of war. Real peace.
That there is no such thing as peace that can be gained by having the foolish power of war.

Peace is about living a normal life.
Peace is about living life to the fullest.

I am living in the present. Together with everyone.
And I will continue to live. Cherish each and every day. Thinking of peace. Praying for peace.

Because the future is an extension of this moment.
In other words, the future is the present.

This is my island, my favorite island. My island, my island of pride. And all the lives that live on this island. My friends, my family, who live with me in the present.

Let's continue to live together.
From this beautiful hometown, surrounded by blue. Let's send out true peace.
Let each one of us stand up and walk into the future together.
Blowing in the wind on the hill of Mabuni, my life is ringing.
Past and present. Resonance of the future.
Deliver the requiem. To the past of sorrow.
Life, echo. To the living future.
I will live in the present.”

For Father's Day - Part 3

Does the Bible advocate male dominance?

So, from the article in Genesis
In the previous article, we saw that Paul relied on male leadership over women in the creation order.

I would like to confirm this.

"And the Lord God said, "It is not good for man to be alone.
I will make for man a helper worthy of him."
(Genesis 2:18)

God referred to women as "helpers".
The Japanese meaning of the word "helper" is "auxiliary role”.

But in the original Hebrew language, it does not have such a negative meaning.

It is the word "ezer.
It is used 21 times in the Bible.

Most of them are found in the Psalms.
It is used to refer to God as "helper".

"I am the afflicted and the poor. Hurry to me, O God.
You are my helper and my deliverer. Do not delay, O Lord."
(Psalm 70:5)

To the same extent that God is a great help to men.
Women are a great help to men.

There is never a higher or lower value or superior or inferior.

Here, God says that it is not good for a man to be alone,
but that by having a helper, they can complement each other and be satisfied.

The only difference between men and women is the difference in roles.

P.S..

While Kathy was mowing the lawn.
I played Shogi chess with my son.

As you can see, I lost the first game.
But, I won the second game.

I don't see many women in the world of Shogi.
Every once in a while, a female professional shogi player is born and becomes a topic of conversation, but it is a rare case.

I think it is a characteristic of men that they are attracted to competitive games.
I think it is not a difference in ability between men and women, but simply a difference in the demographic of people who enjoy playing Shogi.

Today I became a member of the privileged class.

I've been issued a handicapped vehicle tag.
This allows me to park closest to the entrance of any building.

I noticed for the first time that on the questionnaire for my doctor's appointment today,
there was a section asking if I wanted to apply for this tag.

I regret that I hadn't noticed it before.
There were several times I was sweating as I moved a few dozen meters on crutches.

I took the certificate written by the doctor to the city's licensing department
and waited for about 30 minutes.
I was issued the certificate on the spot.

It is one of the best things about developed countries that they take care of the disabled and other vulnerable people.

No matter where you live, whether it's an apartment building, a grocery store, a school, library, or any other public institution,
There is a parking space for the handicapped closest to the entrance.

Those spaces are really helpful, aren't they?
I'm experiencing this firsthand.

「Kai

In honor of Father's Day - Part 2.

Is the Bible advocating male chauvinism?

"The head of the woman is the man.
(1 Corinthians 11:3)

So Does the message written to the Corinthian church apply only to one particular church at that time?

Or does it apply to all Christian churches throughout the ages?
Is it a universal teaching that can be applied to all Christian churches throughout the world?

In examining this
Where is the foundation from which such a teaching is extracted?

So, let's look at what Paul wrote to Timothy.
In this regard, we will refer to the Pauline letter to Timothy, which teaches about the relationship between men and women.

“I will not allow a woman to teach or to dominate a man.
Rather, be quiet.
For Adam was created first, then Eve.
And Adam was not deceived.
But the woman was deceived and made a mistake.”
(First Epistle to Timothy, chapter 2, verses 11-14)

Paul makes it clear to his disciple Timothy that women are not allowed to teach or dominate men in the church.

The reason for this is not because the social situation at the time was male-dominated or because it was in accordance with the reality of a particular church.

It should be noted that he cites the order of creation as the basis for his argument.

"When God created man, he first created Adam as a male.”

"It was Eve who was tricked by the serpent into eating the fruit of the forbidden tree.”

If these historical events are the reason for determining the status relationship between men and women, then it must be said that they are universal teachings that transcend all cultures and all times.

So what is the position of women ministers in the Christian churches in the U.S. and Japan today?

Is it really impossible for a woman to hold a leadership position or teach men in the Christian church?

How do we understand that it is impossible for women to hold leadership positions or teach men in the Christian church?

Does the Bible teach that women were created lower and less valued than men?

More discussion to follow.

P.S

Yesterday, Father's Day, Kathy mowed the huge lawn in front and behind the house by herself with the lawnmower.
Until last year, I had done it myself.
It's a lot of work just to start the engine of a gasoline powered lawn mower.
It is also a heavy machine that emits smoke. I thought it was a job for men.

Recently, she bought a rechargeable electric lawn mower.
With this mower, the engine can be started with a single switch.

When I turned to her and said, "Why don't you have Kai do it?”
“I like this kind of gardening," she replied.

American women are more powerful than Japanese women, aren't they?

thread

Happy Father's Day!

The Bible reveals the Creator of the world as "Father".
The Father is the source of all living things.

The Lord Jesus taught us to call God "Abba".
That is "Father" in the Aramaic language used at that time.

Women are improving their status and advancing in society.
It is a postmodern world. It is wonderful.
I would like to see more opportunities for women to make use of their inherent characteristics and gifts.

In this respect, Japan is the lowest among the developed countries, and it can be said that women are still oppressed in our social environment.

The wave of women's liberation is also penetrating into the Christian church.

Until a while ago, even Jewish rabbis
Even priests and pastors of Christian churches,
there were no women in religious leadership positions.

Even today, there is no such thing as a Jewish rabbi or a Muslim teacher.

Recently, in a study group that I attend
This was brought up there.

One said, "The Bible teaches misogyny and chauvinism.
It is in line with the culture of the time, and it is a teaching for the people of the time.
You can't bring that up today.

"You have to take into account the social conditions of the time.
"We have to examine the application of the teachings to today based on the social conditions of the time.

Isn't that right?

The Bible is a universal text that can be adapted to any age, transcending the thoughts, customs, and lifestyles of the people of that time, I believe.

If you look carefully, this teaching on the status of men and women, in particular, conveys a timeless universality, don't you think?

“Hey Kyota,
You always surprise us by saying liberal things.
Are you conservative when it comes to gender issues?
Do you despise women?”

That's what you might say to me.

I am not a liberal or a conservative, but I am trying to apply the timeless teachings of the Bible to today.
I am just trying to live by them.

For example, here are two verses of Scripture.

"But I want you to know that
The head of every man is Christ, and the head of every woman is man, and the head of Christ is God."
1 Corinthians 11:3

"For the man is the image of God, and the manifestation of his glory.
He should not wear a headgear.
The woman, on the other hand, is a manifestation of the glory of the man."
1 Corinthians 11:7

It's clear here that men are to take leadership over women and woman is merely a manifestation of the glory of the man, and conveys his auxiliary position.

That the pecking order is as certain as Christ being the head of us humans.

This is the teaching of Paul in his letter to the church at Corinth.
We Christians believe this to be a teaching from God.

Is this a teaching that is unique to the Corinthian church only , or is it a teaching that should be applied to the Christian church in Japan today, transcending time and country?

I welcome your support and opposition opinions
Please let me know what you think.

「大臣」の英語名はMINISTER(奉仕者)

The MAJO has been practicing "Gion Kouta" for a while now.

It is a song about the nature and life in Kyoto in each season, spring, summer, autumn and winter.

it is said that due to such a famous song, all Japanese people ahould know it.
But I didn't know it until this moment.

It is also a performance that is often danced by maiko.
Maiko are 16 to early 20 years old, Younger range than Gaisya.
My daughter is just about their age.

My daughter seems to have almost mastered the spring and summer version of the dances this time.

The hand towel she is holding was given to her by her teacher today.

It was given to the teacher by the actor Shintaro Katsu's father.

Happy Birthday to you!

I am happy that our family was able to gather together again this year
I am happy that we were able to come together as a family this year and celebrate the birth of someone special.

We all laughed at the birthday present from Akemi.

The fictional story of how you went to the grocery shop to buy a vegan zen burger and fell in love with it.

That kind of literary talent comes from you.

A friend of mine who knows me well praises our children's talented performance, saying that "a steeple gave birth to a hawk.

I'm sure the “hawk” in our own children comes from you.

This past year has been a very busy one for you, as you have been preparing for online classes with the Corona disaster. what a challenging for you in your first year as a teacher.

Please continue to be healthy and stretch your wings to fly in the sky.

Akemi

Seattle has gone back to spring from summer for the past few days.
In the shade, it feels chilly without long sleeves.

But it's definitely heading toward summer.
Sunset time has already passed 9 p.m.

It's a very different world from winter, when the darkness descended after 4:30 p.m.

There is a lot of progress in my immediate world.

My torn Achilles tendon seems to be connecting quite well.
Starting this week, I can walk with about half my body weight on my legs. I still need crutches and a knee scooter, though.

Akemi and Eric took Kai hiking the day after his 18th birthday.
This was also part of his birthday gift.

Eighteen years ago, on the day he was born, Akemi would just put Kai on her lap and gently pat his head.
Now she acts like a mother, even preparing dinner for us.

Whenever we get together, we play Iroha Karuta.
Today we started playing Bible story karuta.

” Daddy, play with me“ と言って来る時の笑顔。

Eighteen years ago today, my life changed forever.
It was the day our first baby boy was born to us.

At the time, I had just started my ministry and business.
The foundation of our life itself had not yet been laid.

We named the baby boy "Kai".
It means "pioneer" in Japanese.
It was a time of firsts to many things for me.

I went from living in an apartment to owning a house.
And moving there.
It was a few months after Kai was born.

I was so busy just trying to survive.
It was also a time when I was feeling impatient, as if I was being driven away by something.

To our parents,
You gave us joy and rest every day.

The way your soft skin felt,
the way your big eyes looked at me when I nursed you.

Ever since you could walk,
you would say, "Daddy, play with me.” with your full smile.

It was a magic word and a smile that blew away all the stress and fatigue I carried.

It seems dream that in 18 years you have become such a kind, graceful, and wonderful young man.

Happy 18th birthday, Kai.
Thank you for being born to us.
