Ms. Gordon has led one of the most colorful lives of any non-Japanese woman to have lived in Japan since the early 1930s. She also has contributed significantly to our knowledge about Japan through her work at the U.S. Foreign Broadcast Information Service (FBIS) of the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), for the Office of War Information and for TIME magazine. In Tokyo, she worked for the Supreme Commander of the Allied Powers (SCAP) under General Douglas MacArthur as a translator. She and Japan-America Society former member and Thomas S. Foley Award recipient Eleanor Hadley played an integral role in writing into the Japanese constitution legal equality between men and women in Japan. Her memoir, “The Only Woman in the Room” (Kodansha American, 2001) draws fans worldwide.
Ms. Gordon eventually moved to New York City, where she has been Performing Arts Director of the Japan Society and of the Asia Society.
