Share with bikes - and trucks?
More and more we are urged to share our city streets with bicycles. Politicians in particular like to do the urging. And, it's hard to find fault with someone riding a bike. We know all the common sense reasons. It saves gasoline, eliminates pollution and helps keep the rider physically fit. For that we can all be a little patient and watchful when driving.

Now how about a little respect for those who drive the big trucks through the city? It sometimes seems our politicians live in a dream world. They take away parking places. They want everyone to car pool or live in a condo where they can walk to work.

It never seems to amaze me how little they seem to realize how the world actually runs. Do they honestly believe the groceries grow in the store. The 53' truck in the picture drove through the city streets to deliver plant stock for fumigation. It would never have gotten here on a bicycle.

And, while I admire my friends who ride bikes, when was the last time you saw someone riding a bike through the city that was smiling? I know I'm missing something.

USDA keeps bugs out of China

USDA keeps bugs out of China
One of the things the United States Department of Agriculture does is to help prevent unwanted pests from coming into our country. There are many different insects and related pests that are destructive to our crops or our health that can arrive by air or by sea. SeaTac Airport and the Ports of Seattle and Tacoma are big import portals for goods arriving from Asia.

When pests are found the goods are put into quarantine and either destroyed, shipped back to the country of origin or fumigated. Some goods are put on a "watch" list and because of their high degree of risk must be fumigated automatically as a condition of entry.

Each foreign country has its own conditions for requiring fumigation of high risk goods that are imported into their country. In some cases they relay of our USDA to monitor and certify the fumigation of goods for export. In the picture above USDA personnel monitor a Paratex fumigation of logs being exported to China. Wood boring beetles could be in the bark of the logs being exported.

Which way do YOU face

thread
Which way do YOU face
"Oh, east is east and west is west, and never the 'twain shall meet..." said Rudyard Kipling. And,there are many people in this world who place a significance on whether you're looking east or west. Some think it is propitious to face east. I never realized until recently that in the Christian tradition people are buried facing east because of the star rising in the east and a quotation in Matthew "For as the lighting comes from the east and flashes to the west, so also will be the coming of the Son of Man..." thus allowing the dead to see the Second Coming of Jesus. That's pretty heavy. I was more impressed with the quotation of newspaper man Horace Greeley, "Go west, young man, and grow with the country." (actually first made by someone else) It has always seemed more interesting or exciting or something to face west. When Horace Greely was alive in the 1800s facing west in America was an opportunity for growth and excitment and adventure. Some people believe the way our houses and buildings face is important. I once had a feng shui master come to my house for an evaluation. He seemed to agree with me that my house faced the right direction. He particularly liked the fact that I lived at the top of a hill and cul de sac where the "bad spirits could run up the hill and just keep going back down again." What I've finally decided is we should look the direction that makes us feel good. I like looking west and when what I see from my house looking west.
