CES 2018: The Cars of Tomorrow on Display to Today

At past Consumer Electronics Shows, the futuristic cars boasted upgraded audio systems with large speakers, and sleek design and style elements. Today’s cars at CES have far surpassed that technology and now we’re seeing them equipped with computer technology, auto-drive features and even artificial intelligence! The focus is less on engines and mechanics than it is on computerization and automation.

This year at CES, several announcements were made by auto manufacturers regarding new concepts as they work to compete against brands like Tesla and other innovative automakers. Check out a couple of the big ideas here:

Autonomous Driving

Auto manufacturers are in a race to come up with the best self-driving technology including better sensors, cameras and operating systems. The various sensors used in cars include sonar, radar and LiDAR. LiDAR is new to us. It uses a basic technology of radar, but it utilizes light from a laser. Toyota, for example, showed its Lexus SUV with LiDAR technology. But it all boils down to the driving experience, giving consumers the latest technology within a safe and comfortable ride.

Artificial Intelligence (A.I.)

Self-driving cars will be our way of life in the future. Wouldn’t it be ideal if we could get from point A to point B without having to think about it? You could spend your time doing something else, working perhaps, while the car chauffeurs you around! Until that technology is perfected, some manufacturers are adapting A.I. for the in-vehicle entertainment experience with speakers like Alexa. Although Alexa can’t give you a self-driving experience yet, it can find you the information you need.

From what we’re seeing at CES, the cars of tomorrow operate more like computerized transportation mechanisms – it will be interesting to see how fast this technology progresses!
