CES 2018: 5G Speed for Instant Connectivity

You’re probably familiar with 3G and 4G wireless broadband speeds, but this year at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES), the hot topic was 5G – which stands for the “fifth generation” of broadband cellular network technology.

5G is the new communication standard that enables faster downloads. 4G LTE, the previous generation, can transfer up to 1Gbps, but 5G will increase the speed up to 10Gbps. At this new speed, you can download a full HD movie in just a matter of seconds.

5G is not a new idea, but telecom providers are just starting to roll it out. 5G will enable other emerging technologies to be more adaptable to our lives. This faster communication will allow many devices such as cars, phones, and other mobile devices to access data and upload it to appropriate servers to be processed almost instantly. One of the best examples of how this could work was described in a consumer reports article, stating:

Eventually, autonomous cars could be in constant contact with each other and infrastructure such as stoplights. That would take the kind of near-instantaneous data transfer that 5G provides. –

With 5G, our smart devices will get a whole lot smarter. At faster speeds, the information will be more accessible, and our devices will process it with instant precision. It is said Japan will launch a full 5G network in preparation for the Tokyo Olympics in 2020.
