I posted early on that I was very hesitant about blogging about my experience for a number of reasons. I can assure you now, that I am very happy I did. My original purpose to update my family and close friends turned into much more than I expected. I truly never thought that what I wrote would actually be found by anyone else and that it might be of use for someone else. Since writing I have met two other people with similar stories to mine and have heard that others have learned about Cyberknife because of it. I encourage everyone to also tell their story - what ever it is so someone else can learn from you.

I've been doing fairly well - still some annoying ringing in my ear and at times can be frustrating as it's hard to hear things in busy/noisy environments but for the most part everything is great.

More updates to follow but for now in a holding pattern until December for the next MRI.

Today I had two follow up appointments - 1st with Dr. Caplan (ENT) to get a current hearing test. The Audiometric test did confirm further loss in high frequencies - my speech discrimination was 88% (word recognition) - however, my hearing was stated to be in "normal limits". I have noticed in "noisy" environments that I have a harder time hearing if someone is positioned on my left side. I have to be a bit more strategic these days and that can be a bit frustrating.

I also had my 6 month follow up with the Seattle Cyberknife clinic with Dr. Vermeulen - she validated that the tumor has not grown - good news!! Nothing else to do now but wait and see - next MRI in December 2011. MRI's every 6 months for the next year then to every year depending on any noticable change in the tumor.

The findings of the recent MRI are: The Acoustic Neuroma is "unchanged". Prior measurement of the neuroma was 13 x 9mm and now measures 13 x 8mm. The neuroma is basically "stable". I find this great news based on previous information that the tumor can continue to grow - especially right after treatment. They can grow up to a 1.5 years after treatement before subsiding. I have my follow up with Dr. Caplan on 6/20 for an updated hearing exam and then follow up later that day with Dr. Vermeulen at the Cyberknife clinic.

Tonight is my first MRI post treatment to check on the status of the tumor. They did two full IAC (Internal Auditory Canal) Brain Scans and the surrounding brain with and without injected die. I was expecting to get in/out but in all it took about an hour. It made me want to invent some better headphones that would fit underneath the cage for your head while in the MRI itself - it is so tight I had a headache afterward.

I have my appointment set for later in June to get a hearing test at Dr. Caplan's office to check that too.

We're standing on faith and can't wait for the good news.
More to follow soon.

Met with Dr. Vermeulen today for my first follow up since treatment on 12/27-12/29/10. I have had NO symptoms / side-effects ! ! Praise GOD ! ! So, basically what that means now is an MRI in 5 months and then depending on the status of the situation and barring any side effects between now and then I should have MRI's every year. I still have the ringing in my left ear and can't really tell if it is louder or not - it seems like it but don't really remember any baseline to compare.

At any rate I'm very happy with the outcome. I will schedule my 1st MRI from follow up for May 2011 and will post findings afterward.

Thanks to all you for your prayers, support and for following this progress.

Final Cyberknife Treatment

I got up this morning around 4:00 am to check out how much snow had fallen last night we got about 2 inches. The news was showing video of downtown with no activity. I was concerned about getting down there on time as the last snow fall created havoc on the freeways. Fortunately this is a light week for traffic with a lot of people being on vacation we made it downtown in no time and actually got into my session a bit early.

Today was hopefully my last date with "Lenore". As with the other sessions everything was very non-eventful although this session only lasted about 35 minutes so a bit shorter than the other sessions. This is the photo of me at the end standing by Lenore - the Cyberknife robot. I also got my official Certificate of Achievement for Meritorious character, distinguished valor and inspiring courage during Cyberknife radiosurgery. Nice touch I thought.

After treatment we met with the nurse and then Dr. Vermeulen to discuss post treatment planning. We reviewed the possible side affects and the follow up plan. I have my first follow up appointment in 4 weeks to see if I am experiencing any of the side effects; headache, nausea, dizziness/balance problems, seizure (yikes!!), and or fatigue (havent had that problem the last 3 days!).

The follow up plan is to be seen at 1, 3, 6, 9 and 12 months all with MRI scans to track the growth/no-growth of the tumor. As I stated previously the tumor tends to grow a bit after radiation and over time shrink down and hopefully die. So for now things are looking / feeling good I dont have any side effects so feel very blessed about that. Looking forward to coming off the steroids these next couple days to get some sleep.

The entire staff at the Seattle Cyberknife clinic was very professional, courteous and caring. I was made to feel welcome and well taken care of. Our questions were ALL answered thoroughly and in all just a great experience in a situation you don't really want to be in. They made it easy to do. If another situation arises I wouldn't hesitate to consider this treatment as an option.

2nd Cyberknife Treatment

Today was my 2nd treatment - again a NO BRAINER - pun intended :) It was very smooth. I didn't get any sleep last night - I'm told it is the steroids that I'm taking to keep the brain swelling down to avoid headaches. I took my Sting CD in today and listened during my session. The other sort of funny thing that happened after my session yesterday was leaving the session and going into the waiting room - that was full by the way. It seems a lot of people had the same idea as me getting this fit in at the last minute of the year for insurance reasons (maxed out deductables I'm sure - like mine). Anyway you walk out and for most of them they are waiting with family for their 1st session so all eyes are on you like a new tiger at the zoo - you get the feeling as they look at you they are thinking "does he look ok? does he talk funny? is he glowing?" It's quite funny. Although like I said in my other post that I had those same feelings and I was fortunate as I was the only one in the lobby when a gentleman came out and he and his wife both spoke with me. It made a difference. I think the Cyberknife folks should put up a blog or something there for people to connect. I know there is probably some liabilty issue or something is why they don't.

Tomorrow is my last treatment and of course they are calling for SNOW - even the least bit amount seems to snarl traffic and I need to be there by 9:00 am and we're an hour away using the carpool lane :(

I'll follow up tomorrow with any new news after treatment. And I get to bring my mask home. I'm trying to figure out how to paint it like Spiderman and maybe sell them - I am in sales after all....

1st Cyberknife Treatment

Today was my first Cyberknife treatment with Lenore. In total the session lasted about 40 minutes or so. My wife Karen, daughter Lauren and grand-daughter Kaliyah came along and got to come in before my session to see the room and meet Lenore and see the process for getting ready putting on the Spiderman mask. Did I mention you must lie VERY still? You cant really move your head that much anyway but you dont want that beam going anywhere it isnt supposed to go. The session was exactly like it was explained to me very non-eventful. There is nothing to feel or hear for matter the only noise you hear is the robot (Lenore) moving around. And, of course if you open your eyes you see the arm moving around your head. With your eyes closed the beam hits your optic nerve that creates bright white light totally normal and doesnt affect anything. It is the one sensation to know something is happening.

There was some nice light jazz music playing. I was made very comfortable on the table with knee and elbow supports and of course I took my Prayer Shawl that was made by the CFC leaders and children with me to be covered by its warmth and all the prayers knitted into it.

The Cyberknife clinic is in the basement of the James Tower Hospital a lot of concrete. Cell phones dont work down there I had no signal. Just before I went in I got a notice of voice mail I stepped into the hall and listened to a voice message from Pastor Dan praying for me and my treatment. It was so comforting to listen to that just before thanks Pastor Dan and to everyone who has been and continues to pray for my total healing.

Here is a picture of me in my Spiderman mask two more sessions to go tomorrow and Wed 9:00 am.
