「聖なる牧場」とは、屠殺される直前の動物たちを買い取ったボランティアたちによって運営されている農場で、この日はスカジットバレーと言うところまで行ってきました。シアトルから2時間ほど北上したところです。

今年の私の誕生日のために私の家族に「聖なる牧場」に一緒に行ってほしいとお願いました。こんな可愛らしい動物たちと家族と一緒に会うことができて特別な経験となりました。
動物たちが安全でしかもホームでくつろいでいるのを見ては私の心を温たのでしたが、それと同時に幾百万と言う動物が不幸にも救出されないまま彼らがひどい運命を背負わねばならない現実をも思い出させるものでした。本日私たちが出会った牛やヤギは生後24時間で子牛肉として処置されるために機械的に殺されてゆく運命にあったものか、または生産的でないと工場主に見なされるまで働き続け、その体が弱まってから殺される運命にあった動物たちです。私は、毎日食べているものの背後にある残酷な真実を知って以来、私の価値観と妥協して生きることができないと感じました。
私は動物たちに痛みや苦しみを与えようとはもちろん思ってはいなかったのですが、実際間接的にそうしていたんです。毎日肉を食べていると言う習慣から。ヴィーガンとして生きると言うことは、世界にある現実の姿に目を開かせるものとなり、また動物たちのために献身すると言う事が地球全体を救うことにつながることでもあると気付きました。
For my birthday this year I asked that my family visit a farm sanctuary with me! Meeting these sweet animals with them was a great experience.
Although seeing the animals in their safe and loving home warmed my heart, it also reminded me of the millions of animals that are not lucky enough to be saved from the fate they are given. The cows and goats we met today were rescued from dairy operations where they were fated to be killed at 24 hours old for veal, or were destined to work until their bodies were too weak to be considered profitable by the industry, to then be killed. When I discovered the horrible truth behind the products I was eating, I knew that I could no longer live out of alignment with my values. I didn’t want to inflict pain and suffering on innocent animals, and yet I was, just by my eating habits. Going vegan is awakening to the truths of the world and a commitment to the animals you are saving, the earth you are helping, and the body and mind that you honor by choosing to live in harmony with your soul.
