As I stood in line at the US Bank drive-thru as usual, a banker beckoned me through the window, pointing to the entrance of the building.

He then announced that I could enter the store.

However, the 8th Street in Bellevue, which is also a US bank branch, didn't have a drive-thru, so I struck out yesterday.

According to the banker, customers were allowed to enter the store last Monday. However, this policy is not the same at all branches, and there seems to be some variation here and there.
This is the only one store in Renton that allows it.

I also heard about the situation in California from my friends.

Most of the counties in California that have been on lockdown will be allowed to open their retail stores tomorrow.

However, in the county that hosts the city of San Francisco, that's only "partially" allowed, I'm told.
In the case of beauty and barber shops, they were only allowed to operate outside the shop from tomorrow.

Even if you say "outside the shop," few shops have large entrance hall and it's like saying, "You can line up your chairs on the sidewalk and cut.Shampoo balls and mirrors remain unavailable.”
Most shops can't operate on that.

In California, the lockdown has already been going on for over five months.

It's too small to call it progress.
I guess you could say that there has been a little hole in the dark.

After returning from last week's Oregon trip, I am amazed daily at how much the sunset times have changed.
What used to be 9:40 on the summer solstice is now around 7:40.
I didn't notice this and missed the moment of sunset last night.

I don't have to go far.

If I can walk to the nearest park with kids,
Or have dinner on the balcony, that’s enough to me.

That's how I can enjoy the great outdoor life.
And when I can watch the sunset, I'm impressed by the great natural beauty of nature.

Young people, however, are not satisfied with such a conventional life.
I think there is a book and a song called "A Young Man's Quest for the Wilderness".

Within a few days of our return from Oregon,
The kids left for a new camp.

It was 10:30 at night when they left our home.
It would be well past midnight by the time they got out of the car and reached the mountain trail.
From there they would ride the mounted bikes for another hour or so on the trail.

They have a headlamp that says They won't go off the road.
My daughter says it's exhilarating to go on the mountain trails late at night while listening to the owls.

When they arrive at their destination, they have to set up their tents.
What fun is there in doing that between 1:00 and 2:00 a.m.?

Old person like me couldn't understand it at all.
Anyway, l wish them a safe return for the two nights they'll be there.

“The LORD turned to him and said,
“Go in the strength you have
and save Israel out of Midian’s hand.
Am I not sending you?”

“Pardon me, my lord,”
Gideon replied, “but how can I save Israel?
My clan is the weakest in Manasseh,
and I am the least in my family. ”

The LORD answered,
“I will be with you,
and you will strike down all the Midianites,
leaving none alive.”

I was tested for the coronavirus for the first time.

It's a free program offered by the state of Washington.
Anyone can register using the following website and they will receive their test kit by the delivery the next day.

The message after registration says, "We'll deliver it at 2 p.m., so please leave the kit in the designated area so we can pick it up at 3 p.m.

That meant I had to finish the test the next day.
The test was a simple matter of swabbing the inside of my nose with a cotton swab for about 15 seconds and then putting the swab in the test tube.

The results of the test will be shown on the web in a few days.

I wii tell you the results of the test at a later date.

The St. Helena Volcano spreads out in the southern part of Washington State.
We went to Coldwater Lake, which is located deep in the mountains near the volcano.

There is a narrow trail that circles the edge of the lake and is barely wide enough for a person to pass.We rode our bikes there to get to a private beach where there was no one there.

The water is not as cold as the name suggests, and it's a good place to swim.We could see an uninhabited island in the middle of the lake.

The kids were discussing the possibility of swimming to the uninhabited island, and I, again showing my old parentheses, spoke out against it.

Almost deafeningly, one of the family members jumped into the water and started to swim towards the island. One by one, the children followed suit.I had no choice but to swim after them.

There was about 120-130 meters.
I had swum a few kilometers before, so I didn't have a problem with it, but I couldn't remember any of the children swimming that far.

If they get a foot injury along the way.
If their strength is exhausted.
If they drown...
I couldn't help but imagine such things happened.

They didn't have to wait for me to arrive, they made it to the top of the island.

Yesterday I was worried about how high they would jump into the pool.
And today I worried about the length of the swim.

Despite my parents' concerns,
Children grow up without their parents' knowledge.
It seems to have overtaken their parent before I know it.

“And the boy Samuel continued to grow in stature and in favor with the LORD and with people.”

thread

Tamolitch Blue Pool。
Portland

Our second summer vacation was also to a natural pool located deep in the mountains of Oregon.
Tamolitch Blue Pool.
It's about a two and a half hour drive southwest of Portland.

What makes this pool unique is that, despite being so large and deep, it has no inlet for running water from anywhere.

It's not a hot spring, but a cold spring.Water from the nearby mountains gushes out of the bottom of this pool through underground water veins. This water pool origins the McKenzie River.

When we arrived here before noon, there were already dozens of people surrounding the pool. But no one dares to jump into the pool.

When I asked my daughter where the boys went, she told me that they were already up on that high ground. As I watched, I didn't think they were going to jump off of that top, but surprisingly one of my family guy jumped in beautifully.

Kai then tried to follow, so I said, "Stop! Don’t jump in! I screamed.Unbeknownst to me, such a scream was recorded and recorded (sweat).Listen to the flustered parental idiot, lol.

Just before that, I looked down from the top of the cliff and it looked higher than I imagined it would be and it literally knocked me off my feet.

What if landed on the water in the wrong place, what kind of injury I would get, and the sudden cold water could lead to a heart attack.

The boys jumped into the water with no regard for the old parental love. When they succeeded, they were treated as a hero for completing what their father couldn't.

I jumped in from the ground 0 inches above the surface of the water.
It was soooo cold water.

It was so cold that I couldn't stay in the water for a few seconds, and I quickly made it to shore, but my skin was then hit with a zinging pain.
After a few seconds, the pain felt like it had turned to a fire-like heat.I had never experienced anything like this before.

The water is infinitely clear.
The water is crystal clear and there are minerals in the water, including minerals from the springs.

If the water was just a little bit warmer, many people would be able to enjoy it.

“Now there is in Jerusalem near the Sheep Gate a pool, which in Aramaic is called Bethesda and which is surrounded by five covered colonnades. Here a great number of disabled people used to lie—the blind, the lame, the paralyzed. [ ] One who was there had been an invalid for thirty-eight years. When Jesus saw him lying there and learned that he had been in this condition for a long time, he asked him, “Do you want to get well?”
“Sir,” the invalid replied, “I have no one to help me into the pool when the water is stirred. While I am trying to get in, someone else goes down ahead of me.”
Then Jesus said to him, “Get up! Pick up your mat and walk.” At once the man was cured; he picked up his mat and walked.”

thread

The popular Japanese restaurant that usually only accepts reservations was almost empty, as you can see here because of the corona disaster.

It's good enough if you can eat inside, and more than half of Portland's restaurants seem to only accept take-out orders.

There are only a limited number of picnic tables available outside or even inside.

Normally this would not be the case, but I as only guest by myself was led into the sitting Tatami room.

The distance between the entrance and this sitting Tatami room was about 10 meters.

However, I wasn't allowed to enter the restaurant because I hadn't brought my mask with me and was refused to be served.
I walked back to my car and went back into the restaurant with my mask.

I only put my mask on when I walked 10 meters inside the restaurant.
Of course, no masks are forced inside the sitting Tatami room.

This seems like a great formality.

From my point of view, it may seem so, but from the shop's point of view, it has the effect of appealing to customers that they are adhering to a firm "no mask, no entry" policy. This is because it avoids the suspicion that your store has become a source of infection.

So I went to my car to get my mask without resistance.

When the manager, a Japanese woman in a kimono, that I couldn't enter the store, she bent her waist about 70 degrees in a very apologetic manner and politely said, "I'm very sorry.”

I, of course, politely told her that I understood.

By the way, I can't help but think about what would happen if this were an American restaurant.

They probably wouldn't be adhering to the rules in a disciplined manner.
She would have winked at me with one eye and said, "You should have to wear mask to get in, but that’s OK, just follow me” and led me to that room quickly.

I'm not talking about hierarchy or superiority, but simply a cultural difference.
The number of dishes brought to me and the amount of time and effort put into the details are all signs of the Japanese culture that goes into the details.

In addition, only three edamame beans were served in a small bowl, which they called "OTOUSHI", appetizers.
Needless to say, I wiped my face with the hot oshibori served to me.
When Americans saw that, they would laugh at me, saying that I was wiping my face with a "napkin".

I am proud to be born and to have acquired that culture as a Japanese. At the same time, I am proud of America, a country that respects the freedom that I can live in that Japanese culture.

“Look,” said Naomi, “your sister-in-law is going back to her people and her gods. Go back with her.”

But Ruth replied, “Don’t urge me to leave you or to turn back from you. Where you go I will go, and where you stay I will stay. Your people will be my people and your God my God.

Where you die I will die, and there I will be buried. May the LORD deal with me, be it ever so severely, if even death separates you and me.”

I chained my mountain bikes to the hotel railing.
My daughter told me it’s not enough security and to take it in the hotel room.

I don't see the problem so I left them there.
The chains are connected to the bike frame and the railing, so it's fine. Also they are placed right in front of the lobby entrance.

Still, my daughter insists that the chains can be cut by the characteristic cutter.

Such is her cautious and sensitive mindset that she has inherited from her mother.

Especially in a country like the U.S., it might be better to have that level of vigilance against crime.

What do you think?
Are you agree with me or with my daughter?

It was a hot day.
On top of that, there was quite a bit of humidity and even though I was hiking with my son in a wood, the air was hot and I felt tired and wanted to get back indoors as soon as possible.

I checked the temperature on my phone and it was 34 degrees Celsius.
The temperature in Tokyo at the same time was the same 34 degrees.
I felt happy that I could now experience the same heat as everyone else in Tokyo.

There was also a humidity reading.
It was 23% in Seattle,
and 75% in Tokyo.

Heehee, three times the difference in humidity.

I believed I could experience the hardships of Tokyo people only for about a minute.
I was still naive.

People of Japan, your health is more important than your work.
Please take care of yourself.

We have celebrated the 75th anniversary of the end of the Pacific War.

As a major national event, we Japanese hold a special place in our hearts on August 15.
But while Americans may be aware of the fierce fighting between the United States and Japan 75 years ago, few would notice of ending it on this day.

Since then, the U.S. has been involved in and embroiled in many battles, including the Korean War, the Vietnam War, the Afghan War, and the Iraq War, and so on.

From the perspective of the United States, which still deploys troops around the world and is in a state of semi-combat, the end of the war with Japan is just a passing history that is not especially memorable.

On the other hand, since the beginning of its history, Japan was faced the first war that was ravaged by fire all over Japan, and the first war that was lost.

And the way it was lost was so bad.
Major cities across the country were razed to the ground by incendiary bombs.Atomic bombs were dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

It is an unforgivable crime for the U.S. to go to such an barbarous invading acts to exterminate the civilian population.

Even today, almost half of Americans justify the atomic bombings as a compelling choice to end the war.

The reason why they believe this way is because that is what they are taught in history textbooks when they are in middle and high school.

On the other hand, based on the historical perspective of the Tokyo Trials, which condemned Japan's invasion of Asian countries as a satanic act similar to that of Nazi Germany, there are many Japanese who believe that Japan's war actions were all evil.

This is because the Japanese have also been taught such a view of self-defeating history from history textbooks.I myself used to live through such a brainwashing in the past.

As I watched the sunset today, I was reminded that learning is an essential part of human life.
Otherwise, we have no choice but to be steeped in the ideological beliefs that others give us.

We must remain free, independent and unencumbered.
We have to keep learning.

“To the Jews who had believed him, Jesus said,
“If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples.
Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”

They answered him,
“We are Abraham’s descendants
and have never been slaves of anyone.
How can you say that we shall be set free?”

Jesus replied, “Very truly I tell you,
everyone who sins is a slave to sin.
Now a slave has no permanent place in the family,
but a son belongs to it forever.
So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.”
John. 8:31-36

T Japanese restaurant in Bellevue.
This is the first time I've been there since the Corona fiasco started, but I went.

Again, they've made an effort to keep the social distance between guests, but you can eat in.

It should have been busy at 7:00 p.m., but there was only one group of customers other than me.
However, there seemed to be more orders for take-out than before Corona, and I sow those kinds of items ready to go on the counter.

Even though this restaurant has just finished a major renovation, sales must have been down significantly.

The once extremely busy chef's kitchen is no longer working, and the chefs are seemed nothing to do.

Finally, one of the chefs left at around 7:30 pm, greeting his colleagues in Japanese, "See you tomorrow...".

There were no clouds in the sunset today, and the mountains of the Olympic Peninsula were in clear silhouette.

It's rare to see the edges of a mountain emerge so clearly against the setting sun from behind.

It may not be over for a year or two until the request for restraint due to the corona disaster is clearly lifted and the economy returns to normal.

Japan is experiencing a heat wave of over 100℉.
I'd like to express my sympathy for the summer heat in Japan.

What I can do is to introduce a cool Seattle sunset and let you feel cooler for a while.
It's been so cold this evening that it's hard to wear short sleeves.
I was tempted to turn on the heat in my room.

How do you feel, do you feel a little cooler?

Sound like a high point of view?
I'm actually watching the sunset from high up.

“As iron sharpens iron,
so one person sharpens another.”
Pro. 27:17

This is the Bible verse my daughter was looking up after we watched the sunset together.
I think I sharpened her up a lot.

As I looked at the sunset sky today, I noticed that the skies in Seattle have already taken on an autumnal look.

Sometimes I would see cascading clouds in the summer sky in Seattle.
Before I knew it, that season had passed.

Today's sunset is around 8:30 p.m. On the summer solstice, less than two months ago, the sun set at around 9:20 p.m.

SeaFair, one of the most popular summer events in Seattle, has been cancelled this year.Last year I watched the juggling of the Blue Angels over Lake Washington with a group of students from Japan. If we pass the time without such events, we miss the change of the seasons.

We will soon be celebrating the anniversary of the end of the Pasific war.
This is the biggest summer event in Japan. But almost no one here remembers what this day means except those who have been in the war.

In this country where there are no high school baseball games and no fireworks, summer is coming to an end before we know it.

“Generations come and generations go,
but the earth remains forever.

The sun rises and the sun sets,
and hurries back to where it rises.

The wind blows to the south
and turns to the north;

round and round it goes,
ever returning on its course.

All streams flow into the sea,
yet the sea is never full.

To the place the streams come from,
there they return again.

All things are wearisome,
more than one can say.

The eye never has enough of seeing,
nor the ear its fill of hearing.

What has been will be again,
what has been done will be done again;

there is nothing new under the sun.
Is there anything of which one can say,
“Look! This is something new”?

It was here already, long ago;
it was here before our time.

No one remembers the former generations,
and even those yet to come
will not be remembered
by those who follow them.

I, the Teacher, was king over Israel in Jerusalem.
I applied my mind to study and to explore by wisdom
all that is done under the heavens.

What a heavy burden God has laid on mankind!
I have seen all the things that are done under the sun;

all of them are meaningless, a chasing after the wind.”

I went to Kinokuniya bookstore in downtown to buy some Japanese learning materials that I couldn't get yesterday.
I used these to start teaching my children Japanese.
It gave me a chance to take a bird's eye view of my own native language, which I usually use.

It mage me realize that there are two ways to read kanji, onyomi and kunyomi, and that there are different readings for each case, depending on the combination of words.
Once again, I discovered that Japanese is a difficult language to learn.

It must take about three times as much energy as the Japanese spend on learning English.
I was so proud of my daughter for daring to take on such a language.

The kids worked together to make a full course of snacks, dinner, and even the dessert. We worked diligently on several units of Japanese language study, so we missed our usual chance to climb the observation deck.

Instead, we climbed up to the roof.

When you climb up high, you can look out in all directions and, let's say, see the world with a bird's eye view.Learning a foreign language helps us to objectively see what our own native language is all about.

And when we become familiar with the Bible, we can have a bird's eye view of the process from world affairs to the end of the world. This gives us the strength to live in the uncertainty of today and to face tomorrow.

“But now be strong, Zerubbabel,’ declares the LORD.
‘Be strong, Joshua son of Jozadak, the high priest. Be strong,
all you people of the land,’ declares the LORD,
‘and work. For I am with you,’ declares the LORD Almighty.
“This is what I covenanted with you when you came out of Egypt.
And my Spirit remains among you. Do not fear.’
“This is what the LORD Almighty says:
‘In a little while I will once more shake the heavens and the earth,
the sea and the dry land.
I will shake all nations, and what is desired by all nations will come,
and I will fill this house with glory, ’ says the LORD Almighty.
‘The silver is mine and the gold is mine,’ declares the LORD Almighty.
‘The glory of this present house will be greater than
the glory of the former house,’ says the LORD Almighty.
‘And in this place I will grant peace, ’ declares the LORD Almighty.”

Today I went to the river again with my kids and their friends to play in the water.
I've always wondered how can they jump from rocks a few meters high and make a few turns in the air, and then into the river.

Why do they so easily turn their body in the air?
I practiced a few times when I was younger, but I never got around to it.I would stop spinning in mid-air and usually end up falling head-first and upside down.I've been hitting my back and hitting my stomach.

First of all, I can't figure out myself what kind of position I'm in the air. Am I facing right or left, up or down?

How in the world does someone who can do a few somersaults and still get into the water head first or feet first followed a plan controlling the direction of their body? It's no wonder to me.

People who are born with a good sense of balance are able to do it easily from the first time.
On the other hand, there are people like me who can't get it done no matter how many times they practice.

People have a certain amount of things they can't do, and that's good.
That's natural.
That's why it's interesting.

Yesterday the sun set over the horizon with no clouds whatsoever.

And today, there is a band of clouds extending over the horizon.
And the shape of clouds is complex: just above where the sun is hiding at the edge of the mountain, just the diameter of the sun's ring, there is a space in the clouds that allows an intense red light to shine through the hole.

The word "perfect" seems to be generally used to describe either a blue sky with no clouds at all, or a full cloud cover. As if the world is either black and white, 0 or 100.

It's when the cloud formations are neither of these, and are complex, that they seem to deliver even more beautiful light.

“I came to you in weakness with great fear and trembling.
My message and my preaching were not with wise and
persuasive words, but with a demonstration of the Spirit’s power,
so that your faith might not rest on human wisdom,
but on God’s power.”

I went to Uwajimaya in the International District for the first time in a while.
The store is undergoing a renovation and there are veneer covered wall areas all over the store. However, compared to the old layout, it's definitely a lot easier to shop there.

I visited the Kinokuniya bookstore next door, but the access to it is blocked by the renovation work.
I went out and had a look around, but the bookstore was already closed.
It seemed to be open for shortened hours due to the corona crisis, and it was stupid of them to close at 6pm.

My daughter's fever for learning Japanese has been rising recently, so I wanted to get some textbooks for her.I'll have to come back again.

There have been many times in the past when my personal expectations and aspirations have not been met by the environment or others, and at those times I've been grumpy and critical to others.
I was not an independent person then whose happiness depended on what others said and did.

In English, the word of responsibility is made of two words (Response + Ability). In other words, a responsible adult is a perceptive term that refers to someone who is capable of dealing with and controlling his or her own responses, without the environment or others holding their fate in their hands.

And such self-reliance does not come from the relative power relations between human beings. No matter what kind of intellectuals and authorities they are, they are nothing more than an acorn comparison. It is the encounter with the other person who absolutely transcends, that is, the Creator, that leads each person to independence.

The sky in the Seattle area today was so cloudy that I couldn't even see the sunset.
The sun may be closed off at the time, but bright the sunset is still shining on the other side of the clouds. And eventually, other days in the future, the sun will show us a beautiful sunset.

“Light is sweet,
and it pleases the eyes to see the sun.
However many years anyone may live,
let them enjoy them all.
But let them remember the days of darkness,
for there will be many.
Everything to come is meaningless.
You who are young, be happy while you are young,
and let your heart give you joy in the days of your youth.
Follow the ways of your heart
and whatever your eyes see,
but know that for all these things
God will bring you into judgment.”

Today's sunset was quite spectacular.

This morning, the ground was completely leaking as it had been raining since early morning for the first time in a while. It was a nice wetness for the area, which had been experiencing sunshine and high temperatures for some time.
The sun was shining brightly in the evening, and this music of the setting sun cheered me up, as I was tired of the corona.

Look closely over the sunset spot in the last photo.
You should be able to see the aircraft at an angle of ascent.

From the size of the plane, it looks like an international flight.

ANA, which has a direct flight between Seattle and Narita, has decided to cancel its flights until the end of September.Direct flights from Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Vancouver seem to be continuing.I'm hesitant to return to Japan because of the duty of quarantine after arriving in Narita and the possibility of being required to stay in a hotel for 2 weeks.

It seems that from elementary to high schools around Seattle have decided to take online classes at the end of the year. This means my kids won't be able to attend school for nearly a year now.

Who would have imagined this world a year ago?
The unimaginable world will continue to appear in the future.

As I thought about this, the sunset reminded me that the Creator's care and kindness for us will never change.

“Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they? Can any one of you by worrying add a single hour to your life?
“And why do you worry about clothes? See how the flowers of the field grow. They do not labor or spin. Yet I tell you that not even Solomon in all his splendor was dressed like one of these. If that is how God clothes the grass of the field, which is here today and tomorrow is thrown into the fire, will he not much more clothe you—you of little faith?”
Mathew 6:26-30

This is today's sunset.

The way to this lookout was blocked.
But we didn't give up there.
We used a ladder to get access from another route.

I knew our family was descended from ninjas

Then, with the guidance of the sister instructor, we had another sunset yoga session today.

The dessert for dinner was a pie Akemi made with blackberries she just picked this morning.

Today's day is also a gift from God.
I'm grateful.

“Praise the LORD, my soul,
and forget not all his benefits—
who forgives all your sins
and heals all your diseases,
who redeems your life from the pit
and crowns you with love and compassion,
who satisfies your desires with good things
so that your youth is renewed like the eagle’s.”
Psalm 103:2-5

We camped by the lake, so naturally our activities will be more lake related.

One of them was to teach our dog, Kipper, to swim for the first time.

I was so worried about whether she would ever be able to swim that we even tied a floatation ring to her body.

In the beginning, she was afraid of the water, but once she got used to it, she started swimming smoothly. They showed us a splendid performance of dog’s paddle.

By the way, I heard that the word "Dog's Paddle" in Japanese is the same in English also as "Dog's Paddle.

All of us who haven't learned to swim should start doing this dog's paddle when we are thrown into the water. Maybe it's a habit shared by both Japanese and English speakers.

Crescent Lake is a very memorable place for our family. It was also the first place we camped and we have been coming back every year since.

The camp life is a life away from the usual conveniences of city life. There are many inconveniences and a lot of hassle just to eat, sleep, and so on, even the essentials of life. This is where cooperation, communication and patience with each other are tested.

Every year, children are increasingly taking on more of the responsibility for these chores, and they are now outpacing us as parents.

“The heavens declare the glory of God;
the skies proclaim the work of his hands.
Day after day they pour forth speech;
night after night they reveal knowledge”
Psalm 19:1-2
