Shinjuku
Last time, we arrived at Ikebukuro by JR Yamanote Line. From there, we took the JR Yamanote Line in a counterclockwise direction (called the Yamanote Line Inner Circular). The fourth station after Mejiro, Takadanobaba, and Shinokubo is Shinjuku. Shinjuku is called the subcenter of Tokyo, and the Tokyo Metropolitan Government moved from Marunouchi in front of Tokyo Station to Shinjuku in 1991. The Tokyo Metropolitan Government Office is located in the skyscraper district on the west side of Shinjuku Station.
The JR Shinjuku Station receives about 800,000 passengers a day. Including passengers of private railways, Shinjuku Station receives 3,500,000 passengers a day, the highest number in Japan. Shinjuku is home to many hotels, lodging facilities, restaurants, and bars. It is also one of the largest shopping areas in Tokyo, and as a nightlife district, stores are open very late. Many people can be seen playing late into the night.
One of the most famous places to go to at night is Shinjuku Kabukicho. In the center of Kabukicho, there is the Kabuki-za Theater, where you can still see Kabuki performances. However, today Kabukicho is lined with bars and many sex stores, where people gather until very late. It was a place where many tourists could be seen, but it seems that many stores have closed due to the coronavirus pandemic. I have heard that the robot restaurant that was once crowded with foreign tourists has also closed its doors.
When coronavirus comes to an end and we can go to Tokyo, I don't think we can overlook Shinjuku.
