日本人(にほんじん)はよく血液型(けつえきがた)の話(はなし)をします。皆(みな)さんはご自分(じぶん)の血液型(けつえきがた)を知(し)っていますか。知(し)らない人(ひと)も多(おお)いと思(おも)います。また知(し)っていてもそれはあくまでも輸血(ゆけつ)の時(とき)に必要(ひつよう)だからかと思(おも)います。でも日本(にほん)では人(ひと)の性格(せいかく)を語(かた)るときに血液型(けつえきがた)を使(つか)います。これは、日本(にほん)が島国(しまぐに)であり、ほとんどの人(ひと)が日本人(にほんじん)ということで、血液型以外(けつえきがたいがい)でとくに分類(ぶんるい)ができないからなのかもしれません。

また、血液型(けつえきがた)はどの血液型(けつえきがた)が上(うえ)だとか下(した)だという差別(さべつ)の対象(たいしょう)にはなりません。日本人(にほんじん)の血液型分布(けつえきがたぶんぷ)は、O型(がた)32%、A型(がた)37%、B型(がた)22%、AB型(がた)9%でA型(がた)が一番多(いちばんおお)くAB型(がた)が一番少(いちばんすく)なくなっています。どの血液型(けつえきがた)がどのような性格(せいかく)なのかという内容(ないよう)に関(かん)しては、皆(みな)さん日本(にほん)の方(かた)と会(あ)われた時(とき)に聞(き)いてみてください。話(はなし)が弾(はず)むと思(おも)います。

ただ、その話(はなし)をする時(とき)は自分(じぶん)の血液型(けつえきがた)を知(し)っていることが大切(たいせつ)です。

Blood Types

Japanese people often talk about their blood type. Do you know your blood type? I don’t think many people do. Even if you do, it is usually only for blood transfusions. In Japan, we use blood type when discussing a person's personality. This may be because Japan is an island nation and most of the people are Japanese. For this reason, there is no particular classification other than blood type.

Also, blood type is not an object of discrimination as to which blood type is higher or lower. The distribution of blood types in Japan is 32% O, 37% A, 22% B, and 9% AB. A being the most common and AB is the least common. When you meet Japanese people, please ask them about their blood types and what kind of personality they have. I'm sure you'll have a great conversation.

However, it is important to know your blood type if you are going to discuss it.

コロナウイルスが蔓延(まんえん)して世界中(せかいじゅう)でマスクを付(つ)けることが当(あ)たり前(まえ)の世(よ)の中(なか)になっていますが、日本(にほん)ではコロナウイルス以前(いぜん)から多(おお)くの方(かた)が都会(とかい)の屋外(おくがい)でマスクを付(つ)けている姿(すがた)を見(み)ることがありました。ですから、マスクを付(つ)けていても変(へん)に思(おも)われることは決(けっ)して有(あ)りませんでした。

コロナ以前(いぜん)に海外(かいがい)から日本(にほん)に来(こ)られた方(かた)はマスクをしている人(ひと)が多(おお)いことに驚(おどろ)かれたのではないでしょうか。今(いま)は、マスクを付(つ)けないと顰蹙(ひんしゅく)（ひんしゅく）をかいます。マスクを付(つ)けるのが当(あ)たり前(まえ)、していないと嫌(いや)がられます。もともとマスクをする人(ひと)が多(おお)い国(くに)ですから、マスクが必要(ひつよう)と言(い)われても反発(はんぱつ)は有(あ)りませんでした。

マスクは、コンビニエンスストアや駅(えき)のキオスクなどでいつでも気軽(きがる)に買(か)うことができます。ですからマスクを忘(わす)れたりなくしても心配(しんぱい)は要(い)りません。早(はや)くマスクをせずに日本(にほん)に行(い)けるようになってほしいものです。



Masks

Since the spread of the coronavirus, wearing masks has become the norm all over the world. However, even before the coronavirus, many people in Japan wore masks when outdoors in the city, so wearing a mask was never considered strange.

When people from overseas visited Japan before Covid-19, they may have been surprised to see so many people wearing masks. Nowadays, it is frowned upon if you do not wear a mask. Wearing a mask is the norm and if you don't, it is frowned upon. Since many people in Japan have always worn masks, there was no outcry when people were told that masks were necessary.

Masks are readily available at convenience stores and station kiosks. So you don't have to worry if you forget or lose your mask. I hope that the day will soon come when people will be able to go to Japan without having to wear a mask.

日本(にほん)に行(い)ったら温泉(おんせん)や銭湯(せんとう)に行(い)きたいと私(わたし)はいつも思(おも)います。みなさんも是非機会(ぜひきかい)があれば温泉(おんせん)や銭湯(せんとう)に行(い)って温(あたた)まってください。でも、みんなが入(はい)るお風呂(ふろ)ですからいくつかルールがあります。それをしないと周(まわ)りの人(ひと)から嫌(いや)がられます。

(1) 入(い)れ墨(ずみ)やタトゥーがあると入(はい)れないお風呂(ふろ)があります。気(き)をつけてください。

(2) かかり湯(ゆ)をしましょう。これは風呂(ふろ)に入(はい)る前(まえ)に体(からだ)の汗(あせ)などを流(なが)す習慣(しゅうかん)で、お風呂(ふろ)の入(い)り口(ぐち)にはお湯(ゆ)とたらいが準備(じゅんび)されています。それで体(からだ)を数回流(すうかいなが)しましょう。頭(あたま)を濡(ぬ)らす必要(ひつよう)はりません。かかり湯(ゆ)をしないで浴槽(よくそう)には入(はい)ってはいけません。

(3) 浴槽(よくそう)の中(なか)にはタイルを入(い)れてはいけません。タオルは頭(あたま)に巻(ま)くか、置(お)くか、浴槽(よくそう)の外(そと)に置(お)くようにしましょう。

(4) 潜(もぐ)ってはいけません。髪(かみ)の毛(け)を浴槽(よくそう)に入(い)れないように気(き)をつけてください。

(5) 浴槽(よくそう)の中(なか)で体(からだ)や頭(あたま)、顔(かお)、髪(かみ)の毛(け)を洗(あら)ってはいけません。浴槽(よくそう)の外(そと)に洗(あら)い場(ば)があります。

(6) お風呂(ふろ)から外(そと)に出(で)る時(とき)（ロッカーに向(む)かう時(とき)）は体(からだ)を拭(ふ)いてください。

みんなで使(つか)うお風呂(ふろ)です。まわりの人(ひと)に配慮(はいりょ)して楽(たの)しむようにしてください。

What Not to Do in the Bath

Whenever I visit Japan, I always want to go to an onsen (hot springs) or sento (public bath). If you have the chance, please visit an onsen or sento and warm up. However, there are a few rules for bathing in a public bath. If you don't follow them, people around you will not like you.

(1) If you have tattoos, there are some baths you cannot enter. Please be careful.

(2) Rinse before you enter. It is a custom to wash off the sweat from your body before taking a bath. At the entrance of the bath, you will find a tub of hot water and a bowl of water that you can use to rinse your body several times. It is not necessary to wet your head. Do not get into the tub without rinsing yourself off first.

(3) Do not put your towel in the bathtub. Wrap it around your head or place it outside the tub.

(4) Don't dive into the tub or put your hair in it.

(5) Do not wash your body, head, face, or hair in the bathtub. There is a washing area outside of the tub.

(6) Please wipe yourself off before leaving the bath (when going to your locker).

The bath is for everyone to use. Please be considerate of the people around you and enjoy your visit.

アメリカではあまり見(み)かけないのですが、日本(にほん)ではレストランに入(はい)る前(まえ)に食(た)べたいものの食券(しょっけん)を販売機(はんばいき)で買(か)って、着席後(ちゃくせきご)お店(みせ)の人(ひと)に渡(わた)して注文(ちゅうもん)をするシステムが多(おお)くあります。例(たと)えば私(わたし)の好(す)きな「吉野家(よしのや)」を始(はじ)め日本(にほん)のファーストフード店(てん)の多(おお)くがこのシステムを採用(さいよう)しています。これには店員(てんいん)が現金(げんきん)を扱(あつか)わなくて済(す)むという大(おお)きなメリットがあります。というわけで日本(にほん)ではファーストフード店(てん)に強盗(ごうとう)が入(はい)ったと言(い)う話(はなし)を聞(き)くことはありません。

それとは別(べつ)にこのシステムが成立(せいりつ)するのは、米国(べいこく)と違(ちが)ってレストランのメニューに書(か)かれている価格(かかく)が消費税(しょうひぜい)を含(ふく)んでいるからです。また、米国(べいこく)のように日本(にほん)ではチップがないこともこのシステムが導入(どうにゅう)できる大(おお)きな理由(りゆう)です。最近(さいきん)では、コロナウイルスの関係(かんけい)からウエイトレスの方(ほう)に直接注文(ちょくせつちゅうもん)するのではなく、「大戸屋(おおとや)」のようにテーブルに置(お)かれたタブレットなどを使(つか)って注文(ちゅうもん)するシステムも見(み)かけるようになりました。

今後(こんご)はますます食券(しょっけん)、タブレット、スマホアプリなどでの注文(ちゅうもん)が増(ふ)えてくると思(おも)います。同時(どうじ)に決済(けっさい)も食券(しょっけん)、タブレット、スマホアプリを使(つか)えば店員(てんいん)が現金(げんきん)を触(さわ)らない仕組(しく)みが完成(かんせい)すると思(おも)います。皆様(みなさま)の国(くに)では食券(しょっけん)を使(つか)って食(た)べ物(もの)を注文(ちゅうもん)するという仕組(しく)みはありますか。

Meal Ticket

It is not common in the U.S., but in Japan, there is a system where you buy a meal ticket for the food you want to eat from a vending machine before entering a restaurant, and hand it to the waiter after you are seated to order. For example, my favorite restaurant Yoshinoya and many other Japanese fast food restaurants use this system. This has the great advantage that in many cases the waitress does not have to handle cash. This is why you will never hear about robberies in fast food restaurants in Japan.

Apart from that, this system works because, unlike in the U.S., the prices written on restaurant menus include the consumption tax. Another major reason why this system can be implemented is that there is no tipping system in Japan as there is in the US. Recently, due to the coronavirus, we have seen a system where you can order using a tablet or other device placed like "Ootoya", instead of directly ordering from the waitress.

In the future, we will see more and more orders being placed using meal tickets, tablets, and smartphone apps. At the same time, the use of meal vouchers, tablets, and smartphone apps for payment will complete a system in which the clerk does not have to touch the cash. 日本(にほん)のコンビニエンスストアは、日用品(にちようひん)やお弁当(べんとう)などを手軽(てがる)に買(か)える場所(ばしょ)として有名(ゆうめい)ですが、その他(ほか)にも便利(べんり)なことが多(おお)くあります。今日(きょう)はそのお話(はなし)をしたいと思(おも)います。

まず、海外(かいがい)から日本(にほん)に行(い)ったときにお金(かね)を下(お)ろしたい場合(ばあい)、銀行(ぎんこう)や郵便局(ゆうびんきょく)もありますが、コンビニエンスストアに設置(せっち)されているATM を使(つか)うのが便利(べんり)です。24時間(じかん)開(あ)いています。

次(つぎ)に便利(べんり)なのは、宅配便(たくはいびん)の受付場所(うけつけばしょ)としても利用(りよう)できることです。日本国内(にほんこくない)どこにでも1日(にち)で送(おく)ることが可能(かのう)です。また、一部(いちぶ)のホテルのように手数料(てすうりょう)が加算(かさん)されることもありません。ホテルに泊(と)まっていても、ホテル内(ない)で発送(はっそう)するのではなくコンビニまで行(い)ければ少(すこ)しお金(かね)をセーブすることができます。

これ以外(いがい)にも、コピー、FAX、プリントといった簡単(かんたん)な作業(さぎょう)もできます。また、私(わたし)の知(し)る限(かぎ)りすべてのコンビニエンスストアにはWiFi があります。中(なか)には少(すこ)しですが座(すわ)れるスペースも有(あ)り、美味(おい)しいコーヒーを100円(えん)で飲(の)むこともできます。簡単(かんたん)なお土産(みやげ)を買(か)うこともできます。まったくコンビニエンスストアは便利(べんり)です。

 
Convenience Stores 2

Convenience stores in Japan are famous as places where you can easily buy daily necessities and lunch boxes, but there are many other conveniences they offer. Today, I would like to talk about some of them.

First of all, if you are visiting Japan from overseas and want to withdraw money, you can go to a bank or a post office. However, the most convenient way is to use ATMs located in convenience stores, which are open 24 hours a day.

You can also use a convenience store as a courier service. You can send a package anywhere in Japan in one day. Also, you won't be charged a fee as you will in some hotels. Even if you are staying in a hotel, you can save a little money by going to a convenience store instead of shipping items directly from the hotel.

Other than these conveniences, you can also do simple tasks like copying, faxing, and printing. Also, as far as I know, all convenience stores in Japan have WiFi. Some of them even have a little space to sit and enjoy a good cup of coffee for 100 yen. You can also buy some simple souvenirs. Convenience stores are indeed very convenient.
