Design for the New Normal

This pandemic taught us many things and has changed how we live our day-to-day lives. When was the last time you ate with your friends at a restaurant? For me, it was somewhere towards the beginning of March. That was when the “Stay-Home” order began.

Since that time, I decided to provide lunch to our employees who are at the office taking care of our servers and network. At the beginning, we had less than 10 people, but now it is not unusual to see more than 15 people enjoying the lunches we serve.

We order lunches from locally-owned restaurants to support them. With that being said, I noticed that their menus have not changed and prices have not been adjusted at all. They are just serving lunches like they did in the pre-pandemic era. That does not sound strange for many, but for people who have experienced life in Japan, it is quite strange.

In Japan, there has been a ‘take-out culture’ way before the pandemic occurred. It is called BENTO and these items are made for take-out. I always wonder why restaurants here do not have a special menu designed to be taken to-go. Why are they trying not to change when the world has changed so much?

The example I used here is a restaurant, but how about your business? Are you doing something designed to be specific to this new normal?
