Kenichi Uchikura's Newsletter Vol 90 ... Differences in teaching methods between Japan and the US
Aug

I heard an interesting story. Japanese companies teach new employees what they can do and educate them. By comparison, in the United States, new employees are taught what they shouldn't do. Can you see the difference immediately? I thought this was amazing.
Teaching what you can do frames everything in such a way that you can not do anything else. Meanwhile, teaching what you must not do presents the mindset that you can do anything else. The difference is whether to have employees conform to the framework of the company without leveraging their abilities. Or, alternatively, to provide them with an environment in which they can showcase their individual strengths.
What do you think of this difference? I would like to create an environment in which people can exercise their personal strengths, but that is not always easy to do. Freedom is scary and carries some risks.
