South Korean ex-president Lee ordered back to prison for 17 years
Former South Korean president Lee Myung-bak was ordered back to prison Thursday as the country's Supreme Court upheld a 17-year jail term for bribery and embezzlement offenses.
The conservative Lee, who served as president from 2008 to 2013, had been out on bail awaiting the ruling and was not in court for the decision, but police were seen at his Seoul home to take him away, according to reports.
The ruling is not subject to further appeal and at age 78 means Lee is likely to die in prison unless he receives a presidential pardon.
All four of South Korea's living former presidents are either behind bars or have served jail terms -- often as a result of investigations begun under successors who are political rivals.
Lee was first convicted of embezzlement and accepting bribes in late 2018 and jailed. An appeals court later increased his sentence to 17 years but granted him bail pending a further appeal to the nation's highest court.
The Supreme Court on Thursday upheld his conviction for embezzling 25.2 billion won ($22 million) and accepting bribes totalling 9.4 billion won, as well as the 17-year sentence.
Lee is also subject to a 13-billion-won fine and must forfeit assets of 5.7 billion won.
"There was no legal fallacy in the appellate court's ruling on bribery and embezzlement," the Supreme Court said in a statement.
Lee's conservative successor Park Geun-hye is currently serving 20 years in jail for bribery and abuse of power after being ousted in 2017 over a corruption scandal that prompted massive street protests.
Another former leader, the liberal Roh Moo-hyun, took his own life after being questioned in a corruption probe involving his family -- an inquiry that took place during Lee's presidency.
Roh was the political mentor of incumbent President Moon Jae-in, who served in the Blue House throughout Roh's presidency, including a year as his chief of staff.

Honda to quit F1 to focus on zero-emission technology

TOKYO, Oct 2 (Reuters) - Japan's Honda Motor will end its participation as an engine supplier in the FIA Formula One World Championship at the end of the 2021 season to focus on zero-emission technology, it said on Friday.
The decision was made at the end of September and the company does not intend to return to F1, Chief Executive Takahiro Hachigo said in an online news conference.
"This is not a result of the coronavirus pandemic but because of our longer-term carbon-free goal," he said.
Honda, which returned to F1 in 2015 in partnership with the Red Bull Racing team, will instead accelerate development of zero-emission technologies such as fuel cells and batteries.
"We understand how difficult it has been for Honda Motor Company to reach the decision. We understand and respect the reasoning behind this," Red Bull Team Principal Christian Horner said in a statement. (Reporting by Tim Kelly and Chris Gallagher Editing by David Goodman)

China places greater emphasis on Japan to avoid pressure
China is becoming increasingly wary of the four countries - Japan, the United States, Australia and India - strengthening their ties through the latest foreign ministers' meeting, according to a report by Beijing-based Shohei Mitsuka. This is because it could lead to a strengthening of the "China encirclement" called for by the Trump administration as relations with each of the three countries, except Japan, deteriorate after the spread of the new coronavirus. China is increasingly opposed to the U.S. and other countries, but it is taking a different approach to avoid pressure, such as by taking a closer stance toward Japan.
On April 6, the Hong Kong Economic Daily (electronic version) reported that the meeting "is expected to show unity in the four-nation security dialogue amid China's clashes with all of the United States, India, and Australia. There has been no official reaction to the meeting, partly because it is in the middle of the National Day holiday weekend, but it is clear that China is closely monitoring the meeting, as it has hinted in advance that it should be framed in a way that would not be detrimental to a third country.
China is currently at odds not only with the United States, but also with India and Australia. With India, the militaries of the two countries clashed in Ladakh in the northern Indian state of Kashmir, where the line of effective control between China and India runs through. China's demand for an independent investigation into the outbreak of the new corona has been met with a fierce response from Australia, and the situation with Australia remains uncertain as to how to ease tensions.
China is concerned about the expansion of the U.S.-Japan-Australia-India framework. If Vietnam, New Zealand, and other countries join, the U.S. will be forced to contain China. In order to avoid this, it is believed that China wants to stabilize its relations with Japan.
When Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga took office in September, China sent a congratulatory telegram in the name of President Xi Jinping rather than the name of the prime minister, which had been the customary practice, and has taken a stance of attaching importance to Japan. Diplomatic sources in Japan and China have pointed out that it is not in China's best interest to extend the confrontation to Japan and that it is trying to close the distance between Japan and China.

Ministry of Foreign Affairs requests documents from ABC and other U.S. media
The Chinese government has issued a statement saying that it will ask six American media outlets to submit documents about their employees and others stationed in China. It says this is a countermeasure to the U.S. identification of six Chinese media outlets as "propaganda agencies of the Chinese Communist Party.
Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Zhao Lijian issued a statement on April 26, saying, "We ask the ABC and six other American media outlets to submit documents on their employees, finances and other matters related to their presence in China within seven days. This is a countermeasure to the U.S. State Department's recognition of six Chinese media outlets, including the Beijing Weekly, as "propaganda organs of the Chinese Communist Party," which is believed to be an attempt to put pressure on the U.S. side.
China's Foreign Ministry had taken similar measures against four American media outlets, including the Associated Press, in July of this year. (27, 02:37)

South Korea doesn’t have to remain allied with the United States as the American rivalry with China intensifies, according to a key envoy.
"Just because South Korea chose the U.S. 70 years ago doesn't mean it has to choose the U.S. for the next 70 years, too,” Lee Soo-hyuck, the South Korean ambassador to the U.S. told lawmakers in Seoul.
That statement came during a virtual appearance before the South Korean parliament. It’s the latest in a series of comments from the ambassador that have seemed to cast doubt on how South Korea will position itself as China emerges as a global force even as U.S. officials warn that Beijing is waging a "cold war" against the U.S. and democratic allies.
"I feel pride that we are now a country that can choose [between the U.S. and China], not be forced to choose,” he said in June. "As we did in our response to the coronavirus, if we wisely resolve various issues in line with our national interests based on democracy, civic participation, human rights, and openness, I believe we will be able to increase our diplomatic space in major international issues.”

U.S. Beijing bureau chief, last report, "Xi Jinping's politics of fear are now as good as North Korea's
The Beijing bureau chief of the U.S. newspaper "The Washington Post" went to the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region for one last visit to the region before he leaves his post. But what awaited him there was an "ultra-surveillance society" and a "propaganda village," just like in Pyongyang.
This is North Korea, not China.
When we landed at the airport in China's Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region, two public security officials were waiting for us three foreign journalists. We had just flown in on a domestic flight from Beijing, and the duo asked us to show our passports.
When we asked them why they stopped us, they said they were asking us to wear masks because of the outbreak of a new corona outbreak in July in Xinjiang. All of us here were wearing masks before we were told.
They took a page of my passport with my personal information and a photo of my press visa.
This is how the four days of persistent surveillance and annoying checkpoints began. The purpose was to disrupt our reporting activities and to scare the residents out of contact with us.
Everywhere we went, we were followed by a tail car. Every time we found the license plate of a tailing vehicle, we recorded "25 in Honda" or "35 in Volkswagen".
Everywhere I went, I also saw men who looked like undercover agents. Like a slapstick police comedy from the silent movie era, some rushed to hide by jumping into plantings and others pretended to be making phone calls. ...... All were from the authorities who were tracking our actions.
In addition, there were "Michael" and "Smith" who were employees of the Department of Public Safety. We were repeatedly summoned to the hotel lobby by these two men to remind us to follow press regulations, especially to make sure to ask permission for anyone to be interviewed. A truly ridiculous debate ensued over whether or not "building consent" was even required for photography in a public building.
My reporting trip to Kashgar in Xinjiang was the last report that brought an end to my 10 years of reporting activities in Asia. However, what I was reminded of during such a profoundly moving trip was the reality that this was no longer China, but North Korea.
The city of Kashgar, the center of Uyghur culture and once a strategic point on the Silk Road, is now a propaganda village that could easily be mistaken for Pyongyang. Just like Pyongyang, where I was posted before Beijing, it is impossible to tell how much of it is real and how much is staged.
One million Uighurs to go to "re-education camps
I visited Kashgar for the first time in 2006. I still remember my impression of Kashgar when I entered from the Kyrgyz side as a tourist. People with Central Asian faces speaking Uyghur with Arabic script. Fresh figs and smoke from baking kebabs. A noisy Sunday market. It was a magical city, and I was amazed that such a fascinating place existed within the borders of China.
Fourteen years later. Before revisiting Kashgar, I reviewed the photos I took during my first visit. The famous Aitgarh Mosque was alive with activity. Men with long beards and women wearing hijabs, or scarves, to cover their hair. Children posed for the camera with smiles on their faces. What are those kids doing now? Most must be in their early 20s.
The Chinese government has sent more than one million Uyghurs to the 're-education camp' in the past four years. The aim is to deprive them of the Uyghur culture, language and religion. Men are forced to shave off their beards, women are forced to throw away their scarves and loyalty to the Chinese Communist Party. Children were separated from their parents and sent to an orphanage.
On a revisit to Kashgar, at first glance, daily life seems not much different than before. At the night market in the Old City, families were feasting on piles of meat and bread. Children can be heard laughing through the open windows on the upper floors of the building. Young men, a key target of the Chinese government's re-education policy, are also out on the streets.
As I walked around the city, however, I felt the same mixture of sadness and anger that I had felt in Pyongyang. What I found there was a fictional world reminiscent of the movie "The Truman Show. People's eyes were downcast and the air was clearly filled with a heavy atmosphere.
Were the people I had seen in Kashgar influenced by "re-education"?
It almost certainly would be. But it wasn't a situation in which I could ask the citizens very many questions. Just as I did in Pyongyang, I refrained from interviewing the people I would meet on the streets and in the shops. I couldn't do interviews that I would normally do in other parts of the world.
If it was discovered that they had talked to foreign journalists, they might be in danger. We wanted to talk to someone who had been through the re-education camps, but we didn't want to risk putting him in danger. Even if I talked to an ordinary foreigner who wasn't a journalist, or even an ordinary conversation that had nothing to do with re-education, it would be dangerous.
So I imposed on myself something that I would never tolerate as a journalist. Do not talk to us on the street. I never asked questions when I walked into a store or took a taxi.
The only time I would open my mouth was to argue with the public safety authorities. He never asked any more questions than that. All we were allowed to do was watch. And to be seen too.
Xi Jinping intensifies his personal worship
When I was posted to China a little more than two years ago as Beijing Bureau Chief, I was just finishing a book on Kim Jong-un, and my mind was completely on North Korea. Still, I tried to avoid looking at China from the perspective of a neighboring country ruled by delusions of grandeur.
China is not North Korea, I told myself.
But as the stranglehold of the Xi Jinping regime tightened, it was not easy to shake the North Koreans out of my mind.
It is true that China still has a certain level of freedom that North Korea does not have. Nevertheless, there are days when such a China really does feel like North Korea.
Take, for example, the day when Xi Jinping's name dances on the front page headline of the People's Daily, the official newspaper of the Communist Party of China, more than 10 times, and when I stop by a bookstore and don't see any books by anyone other than Xi Jinping on the shelves. Or on October 1 last year, when I saw a giant portrait of Xi Jinping atop a black vehicle parading through Beijing during National Day celebrations.
Xi Jinping is now pushing a line of individual worship unlike anything seen in China in the past few decades.
That propaganda has been successful in some cases. When I spoke with young people in Mao's hometown of Changsha, Hunan province, this year, they appeared to be wholeheartedly admiring the Communist Party. And the elderly people I spoke with in an alleyway in Beijing called Hutong were relieved that it was President Xi, not U.S. President Donald Trump, who led the anti-corona effort.
These people probably meant what they said. Nevertheless, it is becoming harder and harder to judge them by the day.
It is not only in Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region. All over China, it is becoming extremely difficult to have a conversation with people in the streets. People are afraid to open their mouths anyway, whether it's criticism or not. Students, professors, grocery store clerks, taxi drivers, parents with their children ...... all signal to me with their hands to stay away.
Sometimes I meet someone brave enough to want to have a conversation with us. I am always grateful for their honesty, but at the same time I am afraid. But at the same time, I'm afraid. Will he or she be held back because of an article I wrote? Openly expressing an opinion could result in years of imprisonment.
What is acceptable and what is dangerous - the line between what is acceptable and what is not - is not only invisible, it is constantly changing. The line between the two is not only invisible, it is changing at a dizzying pace.
Suppression of foreign journalists.
In China, as in North Korea, more and more foreign journalists are being detained or ordered to leave the country.
As I scrolled through the contact list on the app WeChat, I was reminded once again of how many journalists have been expelled from China.
I was particularly heartbroken by the "M" column. Michael Kovrig and Michael Spaver, both Canadians. The two men, who met through work, were detained by the Chinese in retaliation for Canada's arrest of a Huawei executive and have been held for more than 650 days. This is longer than North Korea's detention of American student Otto Warmbier.
Most recently, in August, it was revealed that Australian national journalist Chen Lei (Chenglei) had been detained. She was on the China Global Television Network (CGTN), where she had been disseminating the Chinese side's views in English to the rest of the world. She is a single mother with two young children.
Less than a week after it was revealed that Chenglei had been detained, I learned that two Australian journalists had made an emergency getaway from China, this time with two Australian journalists who, when questioned by the authorities, had been threatened with a ban and possible detention.
I left China in September with a sinking feeling. It is unlikely that things will turn around and allow more freedom to the Chinese people in the near future. Neither will the situation surrounding foreign journalists trying to convey China's reality, for better or worse.
Before I left China, an old acquaintance told me a joke that is now very popular in China.

Ahead of the U.S. presidential election on March 3, President Trump, 74, and former Vice President Biden, 77, held the final televised debate on the evening of March 22 (the morning of March 23).

The two men exchanged views on the issue of North Korea's continued nuclear development. They also blamed each other for dealing with the new coronavirus and for the allegations against each other, but no decision was reached.
It was one of the few opportunities for Trump, who is outnumbered in the polls, to fight back in the presidential race. Trump touted his track record of "maintaining good relations with North Korea and no war has occurred" in light of his three meetings with North Korean Labor Party Chairman Kim Jong-un. Biden criticized that North Korea has improved its missile capabilities under the Trump administration, and he expressed his willingness to accept a U.S.-North Korea summit as long as it is "on terms of denuclearization".
On the corona response, Trump acknowledged that "the peak of the spread of the disease has passed" and reiterated that a vaccine for the new corona could be developed within a few weeks. Biden criticized the administration's response, saying that there is "not even a comprehensive plan" for controlling the virus, and insisted that "whoever is in charge (should) not continue to be in charge," referring to the enormous sacrifice.
Trump also pursued Biden's son Hunter over allegations that he was paid huge sums of money by Ukrainian companies, saying that his son had been out of work for many years, among other things. In response, Biden denied the allegations and cut back on Trump's refusal to release his tax returns, saying, "What are you hiding?
The debate was held for about 90 minutes in Nashville, Southern Tennessee. The first debate was muddled by Trump's frequent interruptions of Biden's answers, and the second was cancelled due to Trump's corona infection. It is not uncommon for a President to be considered "nice" for getting paid a high salary without doing any work. In fact, the position of President does not play a significant role in the day-to-day activities of a company. The President may actually be a hindrance in the company's daily activities. However, a company cannot exist without a President. A company can operate for days, weeks or months without a President. However, one year or three years from now, a company without a leader will surely cease to exist.
The idea that the President of a company is the public relations officer of a company is becoming more and more popular these days, but this is not the President's job. Of course, it is necessary for management within a company to do PR. However, it seems that Apple's Steve Jobs was the first company to have a President who took the lead in public relations. Since then, many CEOs often give performances explaining a product or the company on stage with a large display. They all want to be Steve Jobs, I guess.
The President’s real job shouldn't be PR. As I mentioned at the beginning, the job of the President is to keep thinking about the future until he or she dies (or retires). As well as to prepare and put in place the organization necessary for that future. This is the essential job of a President. Thinking about the future is like clay pigeon shooting. You can't shoot your gun where the target is flying right now. You need to aim and shoot where the clay pigeon is going based on the current direction, speed, and position.
The difference between clay pigeon shooting and business is that the clay pigeon flies according to the laws of physics. However, there are no basic law that applies to the market. It is incumbent on the President to understand the difference between the two as well. I believe it's important to open your eyes, listen, smell and feel with your body. I haven't played much gold this year. My score really sucks. I understand that the course I play is one of the most challenging in the Pacific Northwest but hitting over 100 is not good at all. I really need to go out more often.

I think I need to explain why Pacific Software Publishing, Inc. has an office in San Diego. We purchased a company called Okiron, which was located in San Diego in 2013. Okiron was a company that operated a web hosting and community portal site ( https://sandiegotown.com ) that focused on the Japanese community in the San Diego area. There was a lot of overlap with our business, so we agreed to absorb and integrate it as a way to expand our operations.
All of Okiron’s hosting customers have been migrated to Pacific Software Publishing's hosting environment. In addition, the San Diego Town community portal site continues to operate as-is. Our San Diego office has been managed from Seattle while operations are being run from the sales office, with activities focused around our design and development staff.
Last year I returned as President, and this year we decided to create a sales department in San Diego in order to ramp up our activities in the San Diego area. We have had two staff members join us as sales people. This trip to San Diego was a business trip to bring a sales vehicle to the San Diego office and to allow me to interact with the San Diego staff myself.
I would like to visit the San Diego office from time-to-time in the future. The only problem is the Coronavirus. I am hoping that we will be able to operate normally as soon as possible. This has been the summary of this business trip.

Last year during the World Cup Rugby was held in Japan.
The team from Whales came to practice at Kitakyusyu stadium where they camped.
On the first day as practice started, they were greeted with Whales National Anthem sang by 15,000 Japanese fans. I am sure they were not expecting this.
It is おもてなし (Omotenashi) , the Japanese hospitality.

I purchase Pulse Oximeters few months ago start testing my blood oxygen level. I heard when you get Covid-19, your O2 level in your blood goes down. I think it tis good indicator where your health is.
In addition, I check my weight, blood sugar, temperature and blood pressure in the morning. I cannot afford to get sick.

From the end-of-September to October 2nd, I visited San Diego, California. I drove from Bellevue to San Diego to bring one of our company cars down there. I left my house at 8:00am. on September 26th and headed south. I got to Oregon in less than 3 hours, the first rest stop was in the middle of Oregon State where I stretched my legs a bit, took a 5 minute break, and then headed south again. The next stop was at 1:00pm, where I filled up in Oregon.
Oregon doesn't allow self-service gasoline, so I had to have it filled. At $2.559 a gallon, the price seemed cheap. Also, since I was driving a Toyota Prius, the tank is small and I filled it up at 7.5 gallons. Next, at 2:30pm, I took a break at a freeway rest stop, I was still not out of Oregon.
There has been a lot of fires lately, and the scars of those fires are visible right next to the freeway. I entered California at about 3:30pm. I kept driving on the freeway through the mountains, so I didn't see any signs that said “Welcome to California”. However, I could see Mt. Shasta and I knew I was in California. Continuing on, I came to a California Fruit Checkpoint. There I was asked if I had any fruit, to which I said "No" and I moved along.
The next stop was at 4:30pm at a rest stop in Lakehead, California. My legs were tired and I wondered how much further I could go, I decided to continue driving south. I arrived in Sacramento, California at 7:00pm and decided to spend the night there, I had driven 750 miles on the first day.
The next morning I left the hotel at 8:30am to fill up the tank and have breakfast. I didn't want to go into a restaurant, so I bought McDonald's breakfast at the drive-through and ate it in the parking lot. I continued my journey south from there. There are rice fields on either side of the freeway, and continue on for miles and miles. You can feel the size of America, and to be frank, the scenery doesn't change for hours, it gets boring.
I then hit mountain roads and drove east of Los Angeles just after 2:30pm. My goal for the day was to spend the night south of Los Angeles. My plan was to meet our company staff here on Monday morning. I found a hotel near our destination and at the end of the day's journey I had covered 1,100 miles total. My mileage for the day was 350 miles, which is half the distance of the first day - this was easy. In the evening, I had a Japanese dinner in a city called Torrance, California before going to the hotel. I ate alone at a table outside, not in the restaurant.
On the third day, I met with our local staff at 8:00am and I started my journey to San Diego at 9:15am. Upon arriving in San Diego, I had driven 1,200 miles, which was covered in 17 hours and 45 minutes. On the last day of the drive I did 100 miles. The speed limit was 65 MPH, and in some places the speed exceeded 95 MPH, so the third day was the most mentally exhausting. Even so, I was able to arrive at our San Diego office before noon and I was pretty tired. Next time I'll tell you about San Diego. Thank you for reading.

Recently in Japan, the college student was arrested for creating Deep Fake Porn moves and selling them on the Internet. I have never heard of the term "Deep Fake" until now.
Deep Fake is a technology that allow pasting someone's face on the other person. They are used in Hollywood Movies where person who is no longer living to be acting in the film. Of cause, this technology is used to create a pro movie using celebrities' faces.
I will not post porn movies but you can search them on the net.

With all the food and pet products now coming from China , it is best to make sure you read the label at the grocery store and especially Walmart when buying food products.
Many products no longer show where they were made, only give where the distributor is located.
It is important to read the bar code to track it's origin.

After coming back from California, I just want to make sure I an not infected by Covid-19, I apply for SCAN Covid-19 testing. The testing kit will arrive tomorrow and will be returned the same day.
The last time I did this SCAN test was back in August 5. I wa=s negative back then. I hope will be negative this time too.
