Ken Uchikura’s Newsletter Vol. 74

thread
Ken Uchikura’s ...

When you ask people to do something, you do not order them.

“Stay-Home” my rear-end. I do not like to be ordered around. Many of us rebel against strong authority. Instead of telling people to do something, why don’t politicians ask for people’s help?

I would phrase it as such:

“We have no cure for COVID-19. The only thing we can ask is for you to stay away from gathering and avoid as much contact with others as possible. There is no other way to slow down the number of human-to-human infections. We are doing our best to create a cure for COVID-19. Until then, please stay alive.”

This makes sense. This will give us purpose … not just an order which we hate.

Product Beta Release Announcement

thread
Product Beta Release Announc...

Please help us refine and release this product.

Simple Data Pool / New Product

We are in the middle of the COVID-19 pandemic and many of us are forced to work remotely from our homes. In this current climate we need to work differently than the way we used to. We are a datacenter and server operation company, so we have plenty of storage space to share files. However, I imagine our customers may be having difficulties managing and sharing files.

We have dedicated a portion of our storage capacity for people to share within their company. This service has been available for years and we are charging $99 for 10GB of storage. We have now increased the capacity by 10 times to 100GB of space for $99. This storage space can be upgraded to 1TB and is the best option available with complete and personalized customer support.

Being such a versatile solution, with account access you can backup and share any type of file. You can use it as an offsite backup, it is all up to you and your company’s needs. For more information, please call us or visit https://www.simpledatapool.com .

Please be advised that the system may not be ready as we are currently testing this storage application. If you are interested in becoming a test user, please contact me. I have a limited number of users who can use the system for a free evaluation period.

Ken Uchikura Newsletter Vol. 73 : Thank you!!!

thread
Seattle Times March 2, 2020 Seattle Times March 2, 2020

Thank you!!!

I don’t even remember the last time that I ate at any restaurant. During the weekdays, we order lunch from locally-owned restaurants for the people coming to work at the office. I wanted to thank all of the people who must work at the office to make sure businesses have their websites up and email running smoothly. I also wanted to help local restaurants.

I also appreciate all of the people who are working as an essential service, from the grocery store workers to the medical professionals. The only reason we are not panicking is that we have people who take care of us. We will do as much to take care of your Internet needs.

It is never a good time to talk about “Could have …” and “Should have…”. It is time to help each other as much as we can. It is our responsibility to take care of ourselves to do as much as we can to stay healthy. Let’s do our best to make sure we empty one more bed for somebody who is really sick. I can not speak for other people but that is what our employees and myself are trying to do.

If we do get sick, I hope we can trust our medical professionals to take care of us. As an Internet infrastructure service provider, if you have any problem with your web or email, call us. We do not care if you are our customer or not - this is what we are here for. Please take care of yourselves and thank you for being healthy.

How much do YouTuber Make?
This is what I have learned.
The below provides a guide to How Much YouTubers actually Make;

  • On Average the YouTube channel can receive $18 per 1,000 ad views. This equates to $3 - $5 per 1000 video views.

So, if you have a million view video, you should be able to receive $3 ~ $5,000.
That is not too bad. But I do not know for sure.

My Newsletter Vol 72 | First Impression

    thread
    My Newsletter Vol 72 | First ...

    First Impression

This is why I think “First Impressions” are very important. Whether we like it or not, people judge a book by its cover. If you do not judge people by how they look, style of their hair, their teeth, stand, walk, dress, the way they talk, and so on - you are one special person. I am not that person.

When you hear something from someone you like, you tend to believe it. Though when you hear something from someone you do not like, you tend to think that person is lying. When likes and dislikes go beyond looks and to religions and politics, this is where divide occurs.

What I mean is, depending on which side of the fence you are on, you start to think the other side is always bad. That means that if the same thing was spoken by both sides, the side you are on is correct and the other side is wrong. If you are in business, it is important to stay neutral. You do not want to give the impression that you are on one side or the other.

The first impression is important so that people will listen to you. Keep your opinions to yourself because whether you like it or not, you will be judged. As a business owner or manager, your impression is the company’s impression. Remember, everyone has the right to their opinion, as long as it is kept to yourself.

Give yourself a chance to be heard. Someone I know always dresses up. He told me that he is dressing up for his clients, not for himself. He is my business coach … he is the best. I am the worst student he has ever had.

I know your business is hurting ... but so as everyone else. So, is it inconsiderate of me to ask for some contribution from the restaurant side as well. Why don't you come up with something different. I am just not talking about price only. I am talking about adding one side dish as a tank you. Even adding little note scything thank your supporting the restaurant.

    * Reduce the menu items.
    * Reduce the price.
    * Increase the service. Just say thanks more often.

However, because of the Coronavirus Pandemic, we are now in the middle of the biggest stock value loss we have ever seen. In addition, restaurants are closed, airlines are running empty or canceling and hotels are vacant. Needless to say, there will be a lot of people losing their jobs. I guess the logic is that losing a job is better than losing one’s life.

I have been a business owner since 1987. That means I have survived through the dot-com bust, the housing crisis, and 9/11. Locally we have survived the Seattle WTO protests, a datacenter flooding and the Fisher Plaza electrical fire. Even more frequently, we have survived hackings, DOS attacks, virus attacks, and server breakdowns. When I look back, we are always dealing with some kind of crisis.

What did I learn? Here are few things that I keep in mind:

    1. Do not make rush decisions and be prepared. I was not prepared for the Coronavirus Pandemic.
    2. Reserve some cash. Having a rainy day fund makes it so you do not need to panic, it will buy you some time.
    3. Communicate with your staff. You may not agree with many things but listen and try to understand. Also, many people have good ideas but do not know how to explain them.
    4. Stay calm. If you panic, your entire company will panic. You are the captain of your ship … you should never show people you are sweating.
    5. Always remember that a crisis will always end. You should start preparing for what to do when it is over. Keep your mind in better place.

Those are the things I think of whether we are in a crisis or not. I always think about “Murphy’s Law” and “Heinrich’s Law”. If you do not know what they are, you should look them up.

Remember, the Coronavirus crisis will be over someday, are you prepared for it?

This weekend, the CDC updated... This weekend, the CDC updated their recommendations to
include the use of masks and face coverings to help prevent
    the spread of infection.

I am smiling ... Can you tell??

Use of Cloth Face Coverings to Help Slow the Spread of COVID-19!
CDC on Homemade Cloth Face Coverings

CDC recommends wearing cloth face coverings in public settings where other social distancing measures are difficult to maintain (e.g., grocery stores and pharmacies), especially in areas of significant community-based transmission.

CDC also advises the use of simple cloth face coverings to slow the spread of the virus and help people who may have the virus and do not know it from transmitting it to others. Cloth face coverings fashioned from household items or made at home from common materials at low cost can be used as an additional, voluntary public health measure.

Cloth face coverings should not be placed on young children under age 2, anyone who has trouble breathing, or is unconscious, incapacitated or otherwise unable to remove the mask without assistance.

The cloth face coverings recommended are not surgical masks or N-95 respirators. Those are critical supplies that must continue to be reserved for healthcare workers and other medical first responders, as recommended by current CDC guidance.

    Essential Businesses

I cannot think of a more essent... I cannot think of a more essential business than chocolate!
    @FRAN'S OLD BELLEVUE
We provide Internet Web and Email services to many corporations through our datacenter located in Seattle, Washington. Because of that, we are categorized as an essential business / service. But even with that categorization, currently about 75% of people are working remotely for home.

There are many businesses run by may friends which are closed because they are not considered essential. As far as businesses are concern, there is not such thing as non-essential business. Regardless of the business type, when they are closed, they create huge amount void to our society. Not to mention the amount of jobs that are lost.

We often thank all the people who work at healthcare sectors fighting COVID-19, but we also have thank everybody trying to keep themselves health so that we do not overwhelm the medical system.

We are all in this together. Let's give everybody including ourselves a cheers. Good job everyone.

    What is "A Machine Identificati...
Most of you do not know that your printer prints secret code to the printed paper.

    What?

It is called "A Machine Identification Code" which prints date, time and printer serial number using tiny yellow dots almost invisible to your eyes. This is not something new. It has been going on since the beginning of printer to identify and authentic the printed document.

    How do you use it?

Someone may present the document claiming the date of the document to be 2 years ago with your signature. With this "A Machine Identification Code", people can proof it was printed few weeks ago and the printer that you have no access of.

So next time you print something on the inkjet printer, take a close look and see if you can spot small yellow dots.

ps: What happen when you run out of yellow ink??? Hmmm

    What Social Distancing ???

    thread
1' is not Social Distance 1' is not Social Distance
One of the fact I heard that there are more COVID-19 infections in NY is the fact that people have to use subway and other public transportation system to move around. Looking at some of the pictures, it reminds me of rush hours in Japan.

Public Transportation is a good idea but when it comes to containing infections like COVID-19, it is not good. Here in Washington State, we are buliding light rail system. Is that a good idea?

I like rail system ... but I don't like the way they tricked people to pay more. We vote it down, but judge is still allowing them charge more. I really hate that part.

    Remote Work

If remote work is great for a company, every company should be doing it. The fact is, that remote work is an alternative to working in the office in many cases. Remote work is not ideal for small companies that feature many decision changes. One of the most significant advantages that small companies have over large companies is the speed and ability to change direction. Being able to adapt to market changes quickly and swiftly makes small businesses competitive.

Small companies working remotely will lose this competitive advantage. Remote work is great for doing set daily tasks. These types of tasks can be done even more productively at home. Though, there are not many small growing companies featuring these kinds of established tasks. So getting better productivity from remote work for small companies is almost null.

In order to protect employees due to the Coronavirus, many companies are allowing people to work from home. This is an understandable course of action. No company or management want to be responsible for people getting infected. However, do not think because you feel more comfortable working from home, companies will allow remote work when it becomes unnecessary. Especially for small businesses.
