The TV has been around for almost 100 years. It evolved from a tube-based appliance to a thinner and bigger LCD (Liquid Crystal Display) screen with LED (Light-Emitting Diode) technology. There’s a lot more to the history and evolution of the television, but let’s set our focus on what’s current and upcoming.
Plasma TVs used to be the modern technology, but they’re not as popular anymore with the rise of improved LCD TVs. And plasma TVs aren’t always offered in nice, thin panels like LCD TVs. People often confuse LCD and LED, but LED is simply a new generation of the LCD TV. Instead of using fluorescent tubes, LED TVs use light-emitting diodes to illuminate the screen. LED technology is super efficient, consuming up to 90 percent less energy than other light sources from the past.
At the 2018 Consumer Electronics Show (CES), there were new technologies leading the industry with 1) OLED: LED using organic electroluminescent materials, therefore making it possible to make TVs thinner, lighter, and more brilliant in color, and 2) MicroLED: a similar technology with potential for even better color displays.
At CES this year, Samsung unveiled its 146-inch MicroLED screen prototype TV, appropriately nicknamed “The Wall” for its enormity. Hopefully, the future involves this brilliant television technology in smaller displays so the average American household can afford it!
