CES 2018: The Evolution of Smart Speakers

Why is Alexa a hot item in our homes today? Because it’s not just a speaker for music, but rather it’s a home butler system run by artificial intelligence. When it comes to the Internet of things (IoT), manufacturers are aiming to become the leader in connecting all devices and appliances in the household or office via these smart speaker systems. At the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) this year, the battle was on between Amazon’s Alexa and other competitors, like Google, who showed off what technology they have to offer.

Smart speakers come with voice commands. Instead of typing on your keyboards, you talk to your speaker, which will answer you back, and sometimes take it a step further by ordering items, setting up your appointments, or arming your home security systems. The futuristic technology we saw in the Star Trek movies is now looking like a reality in our homes!

The variety of voice commands and the quality of responses by artificial intelligence have improved a lot in the last few years, but there is room for more. How much the speakers can access and control are key to their success. After all, smart speakers are not smart unless people give them the logic to perform their specified tasks.

Paired with ultra-fast wireless broadband connections, technology is on the horizon for household electronics, audio/TV, appliances, security systems, and more, to be controlled by artificial intelligence.
