How to Repurpose Content

thread
How to Repurpose Content
A large part of digital marketing today is creating content, but it can get exhausting having to constantly create new content for your business. That’s where repurposing content comes in. For those worried about Google and other search engines penalizing your site for duplicate content, it’s important to point out that repurposing content is not copying and pasting the same exact content and publishing it again. Instead, it’s updating outdated content and grabbing pieces you can use in a different format. So, since it won’t be identical content, you won’t be violating Google’s guidelines.

Repurposing content will increase awareness of your brand and make it easier to market your business. So, many companies employ that strategy, which allows marketers to focus their efforts on other marketing tasks. Content marketing through multiple different platforms has proven to be effective, but there’s only so much new content you can create on a regular basis. Here are some ways to repurpose old blog content:
  • Create a YouTube video
  • Create a (new) infographic.
  • Create a podcast episode.
  • Grab snippets (quotes, important statistics) for social media posts.

Updating Older Content

woman in white lace top using laptop

Repurposing content doesn’t just have to consist of picking and choosing snippets of blog posts, videos, social media posts, and other types of content to repost. It can also include updating older content. The business world especially moves at a fast pace, as things are constantly changing. With those new developments, you can make adjustments and additions. Some sites even let you change the publish date, so it’ll show on your blog as a new post, including Bloguru, our blogging platform. With Bloguru, you not only can manually adjust the post date but also the post time.

Repurposing content isn’t a replacement for content creation, but it will help you sustain the constant flow of content you’ll need to post to help increase brand awareness for your business. But, more importantly, blog posts may not be the best medium for your content or your business. So, experimenting with different mediums lets you figure out which works best for your content and which platform you should invest more time in. Repurposing content helps increase brand awareness, makes it easier for marketers, and gives you a better idea of what works best for your brand. So, it’s no wonder why so many companies do it.

Bloguru’s Twitter Integration Changes

thread
Bloguru’s Twitt...
Earlier this year, Twitter started charging third parties for API usage, which caused many websites to remove Twitter from their website. API stands for Application Programming Interface and lets developers integrate existing software systems into new applications. Usually, websites use APIs to share information or carry out diverse tasks. With Twitter’s new API changes, many websites have removed Twitter integration. Now, Bloguru has done the same.

It is, however, worth noting that our team is investigating a new API for our users in hopes of enhancing and upgrading the overall experience for our Bloguru users. If you’d still like to share your blog posts with your Twitter followers, copy your post’s URL and paste it into a new tweet.

What’s New Newsletter Vol. 158 “Company Blogs”

thread
What’s New News...
It may be more work, but there’s a reason why many companies have a blog; they allow businesses to demonstrate their expertise and establish credibility. Customers aren’t just looking at the price and quality of products anymore; they want to know who they’re buying from and compare it to others before deciding who to purchase from.

For blog posts, businesses should look to create informational content about their company, industry, and customers. Businesses can feature their blog on their website, which will help increase the company site’s overall website traffic. Or they can use a separate blogging platform like Bloguru, which is what we use for PSPINC. If you need more help setting up a company blog or brainstorming content ideas, we have experts who would be more than happy to help.

Basic HTML and CSS Everyone Should Know

thread
Basic HTML and CSS Everyon...
Whether you’re a coder or not, some basic HTML and CSS knowledge is always a plus. While there are multiple website builders out there now that do all the heavy lifting, they’re not always perfect. Every once in a while, you’ll find a broken image. Or you’ll realize you want to re-format some text so that it’s centered on your homepage, but you don’t want it to apply to all the other images on the page. As far as web design goes, website builders generally work within templates.

From a user’s perspective, it means that when you change one thing, odds are it’ll also change other aspects of the webpage. For example, if you decide you want a header to be blue instead of black, the website builder you’re using will probably make all headers on your website blue. So having some very basic HTML and CSS knowledge will be helpful moving on. Plus, it’ll look good on your resume.

Header Tags

When building out the content on any of your website pages, you’ll need to have some headings. An easy way to do that with HTML is using what’s called header tags. There are six header tags, going from H1 to H6. The lower the number, the larger the font size. As a general rule, H1 tags should only be used once on a page, so it’s generally reserved for the page name. The reason why is because using more than one H1 tag can come across as spam to Google. So, it’s considered best practice to just use one. As for the rest of the header tags, you can use whatever size you think fits best for your page.

What Header Tags Look Like in HTML

Image Tags

image html tag

When inserting an image with HTML and CSS, there are a few things to keep in mind. For starters, you might want to use stock photos that are free to use. If you’re creating your company website, the last thing you want is to run into some copyright issues. Secondly, you’ll probably want to place it in a specific position (left, center, or right) and resize it so that it won’t be a tiny image on the page or take up the whole width of your webpage. When putting an image in HTML, you’ll want to use what’s called image tags, which will require you to add a source code.

As complicated as it sounds, it’s actually quite easy to do. In simplistic terms, it means that the HTML code needs to pull the image from somewhere, whether it’s a file stored somewhere on your site, or the image link if it’s an image you found online. Additionally, you’ll want to add alt and class tags to help improve the page’s overall search engine optimization (SEO) and make it clear which element you’re editing when you move over to CSS. For this example, I’ve found a picture of a mountain on Pexels, a free stock photo site. So I’ve inserted the link to the image as the source and entered the word mountain in the alt tag and because I want to change the picture’s position later, I’ve named the class center.

image css tags
image after putting tags in css

To change the image’s overall position and size, you’ll have to add some code into CSS. Say you put your mountain image into HTML but you soon realize it’s too big and not centered. What you’ll want to do next is enter “.center {“ in CSS to start the process. After that, you’ll want to resize your image through percentages (rather than pixels or inches). That way, it’ll still be responsive when you look at the page on a mobile device. For this example, let’s make the image height half of what it originally is and the height 70%. To center it, you’ll want to set the left and right margins to auto and make it a block element with the display tag. And lastly, you’ll want to remember to close it with a “}” symbol.

Paragraph Tags

paragraph tags in html

So say after you put your headings and images, you want to add some body text. In HTML, they’re called paragraph tags and it’s perhaps the easiest HTML you can learn, comparatively. All you have to do is start with a paragraph tag, insert whatever written content you want in there, and then close the tag. Simple as that. For the example above, I’ve just inserted some Lorem Ipsum (dummy text).
paragraph tags in css
body paragraph text preview

If you want to change the position of that text, you’ll do something similar to what you did with the image tags in CSS. Say you want it to not take up the entire width of the page so that there’s some white space on both sides. To do this, you’ll want to add some padding on both sides so that the text won’t take up the full width of the page. To do that, you’ll add the padding-left and padding-right tags to your CSS and add a percentage. For this example, I’ve set them both to 20%.

If you want to put in some extra HTML and CSS practice, CodePen is the perfect site to do just that. Plus, you can find some cool designs on there too with the full HTML and CSS for you to use on your own site. After that, you can add it into your own site, which most website builders support. In fact, PSPINC’s web building tool, WebdeXpress, as well as PSPINC’s blogging platform, Bloguru, supports HTML and CSS.

The last thing I’ll leave you with is this: always to close your HTML and CSS tags. For HTML it’s adding </> to the corresponding tag. For CSS, it’s simply adding “}” after all your tags for each element. If you don't have the time to inspect and add to your website's code or if you find it all too technical, consider letting PSPINC help by requesting a quote.

Benefits of Business Blogging

thread
Benefits of Business Blogging
A blog is defined by Wikipedia as a discussion or informational website published on the World Wide Web consisting of discrete, often informal diary-style text entries.

So we know what a blog is, but now the question is - why should you as a business owner blog? There is more than one reason that your business should have a blog. So let's talk about the benefits of business blogging (I love alliteration)!

Make a personal connection with your customers

We are all looking for that edge that sets us apart from our competitors. One thing that we absolutely value at PSPINC is the personal customer support we offer. If you talk with one of our support technicians you will learn their name and be able to contact them easily again in the future.

Blogging is another way to establish that connection. It allows the author to speak in an informal manner to their customers and create a relationship of sorts. If a customer follows your blog, they may be more likely to call and request the blogger by name. Think of it as a way of laying the foundation for future lead generation and sales.

Good for search engine optimization

We’ve talked a lot about search engine optimization in the past because it is so important to get your website seen. Blogging has the potential to be a big part of that for a number of reasons.
    1. Provides fresh content on your website which tells search engines that your site is actively being updated. This encourages search engines to crawl your website more frequently.

    1. Blogging allows you to use keywords that your customers are likely to search to find your website. The more those keywords are organically found on your website through blog content, the more likely it is that a search engine will serve your site to your customers.

  1. Allows you to reach a specific audience with each post. At PSPINC we offer numerous different types of services, from web design to web and mobile application development to technical support. Often each service caters to different types of customers. The keywords one type of customer uses in search engines to find you may be different from another. Blogging allows you to fill the gaps and cast the widest net possible.

An avenue for showcasing your company culture and news

When a customer is deciding whether or not to do business with you, or a potential job candidate is trying to determine if your company is the right fit, the company blog lets them know what you are all about. It’s an invaluable tool to share company culture, latest news, as well as brag a bit about your many accomplishments!

Those are just a few of the many benefits of business blogging. There are many blogging platforms out there that make it really easy to get started. We even have our own platform called Bloguru. Bloguru is totally ad-free, can be embedded on your website, and presents your content to Bloguru’s loyal and established user base to get extra eyes on your content. In fact, the blog you are reading right now was published to Bloguru. Did we mention it is totally free to sign up?

If you have any questions on blogging or need help getting started, please contact us by phone at 1-800-232-3989, by email at contact@pspinc.com, or by our online contact form.

PSPINC What's New Newsletter Vol.61 "What is a Server"

thread
PSPINC What's New Newslette...
Vol. 61

We often use the word "server" when talking about the Internet. What is a server? Some people ask me if a server is a type of device or a specific OS (operating system). For example, in my company, we have over 500 servers in our data center. It sounds great, but what does it mean?

What is the difference between a server and the PC that you are using?

The answer is, that both your PC and the server are basically the same. The PC you are using can be used as a server. However, a server has its role and certain modifications to perform that role. Let's look at the hardware differences, which are just modifications to keep the computer running stably, and are not absolutely necessary.

  • Duplicate power supplies so if one of them breaks, your server can still run.
  • The network cards are also duplicated so that if one of them breaks, your server can still run.
  • More memory than a normal PC
  • It uses multiple, high-speed CPUs
  • More disk space

These are some of the ways a PC and a server differ, but beyond that, there are no other major differences.

Next, let's consider the usage.

On a PC, individuals use various software to do their work.

A server processes and delivers the necessary data to a large number of users.

A PC allows users to install and use any software they want, such as word processing software to write sentences. A server, however, is not something that an individual user can install and use as needed. From the beginning, the software installed on a server is determined based on its use. For example, a server with mail server software installed is designated to be a mail server. A server that stores data is called a storage server and a server that hosts websites is called a web server.

This is the difference between a server and a PC. Servers are difficult to set up and require expert knowledge to maintain and operate. This is the reason why people don't have servers in their offices.

PSPinc What's New Newsletter Vol.58 "How blogging regularly can help your website"

thread
PSPinc What's New Newsletter...
Vol. 58

Pacific Software Publishing, Inc. has been running an ad-free blog site (https://bloguru.com) for free since 2004. The content posted on this site often appears at the top of Google search results. The reason for this is that it is an ad-free platform. Also, because so many users write regularly, the site is often crawled by search engines.

Blogs are sometimes used for business purposes, but many posts are often written by managers and business owners who write about their normal lives. At first glance, the content may seem unrelated to business, but in many cases, when you start a business, you want to know more about the other person. Not to mention that being a blogger allows you to see a part of their normal life, which creates a sense of familiarity.

We believe that ad-free blogging is the most suitable platform to introduce yourself as such. It also features an RSS function (a feature that displays the latest information on your website), automatic posting to Twitter, and a Facebook share option.

At first glance, blogs may seem irrelevant to business, but with Bloguru, you can introduce yourself as part of your business. If you are interested, please register and use it.

A quick guide to typography for the web

thread
A quick guide to typography fo...
Typography is one of the most important aspects of web design, yet also perhaps one of the most overlooked. Anybody can choose a typeface, but choosing the right typeface and then displaying it correctly can be a crucial step to reaching your users. Here are some tips for enhancing your website’s typography:

Choosing the right typeface.

First of all, yes it’s called a typeface, not a font. Without getting into too many details, Helvetica is a typeface, 18pt Helvetica Light is a font. Moving on. Generally, when choosing a typeface for your website, the choice often comes down to serif vs sans-serif. There’s not necessarily a right or wrong answer here, but some people feel very strongly one way or the other. Recent studies have found that sans-serif may be slightly more readable than serif, but the margin is very slim and ultimately comes down to preference, and what you’re used to reading. Display fonts are fine for headers, but avoid using anything other than a basic serif or sans-serif for your body copy.

Font size and line-height.

The next step is deciding the right size and spacing for your chosen type. These values will need to change based on device type and screen size (see image below), but in regards to font sizing for a desktop the common rule is to choose something in the 16-21px range. Your line spacing (line-height) should be in the range of 130%-170% of your font size. For instance, if you have a font size of 16px, a line-height of 150% would equal 24px.

Font Size

Line Length for maximum readability.

Another important aspect to typography for the web is setting a reasonable line length. There have been many studies on this, which all find that the ideal line length for maximum readability is somewhere in the range of 45-80 characters. This is probably one of the most easily overlooked topics of typography, but critical to retaining user attention. See the image below for examples of various character lengths.

Line length

A couple more things.

Anyone who has ever tried to read yellow text on a white background has experienced the importance of a proper contrast between your type and background color. A general rule is to shoot for a contrast of at least 4.5:1 between type and background, but this varies depending on the weight of your font. Finally, make sure to establish an appropriate visual hierarchy between headers and body copy. This will allow users to scan your content as needed to find what they’re looking for.

If you’d like some help figuring out the perfect way to reach your users by creating a beautiful, easily readable and scannable website, don’t hesitate to reach out. Let our design team help you out with that.
