Mr. Allen Nakamoto provided us the opportunity to see a precious flag.
Mr. Nakamoto is engaged in activities to convey the history of Japanese American military personnel as a former executive member of the Seattle Nisei Veteran’s Committee. He also has served in the US Navy as an American citizen.
The flag in the photo is owned by Mr. Nakamoto's friend, and he was asked to write the characters written on the flag and the meaning of those characters.
The characters written on the flag of the Hinomaru for the convoy soldiers resonated very much with me. Each character conveys the thoughts and determination of the people who lived as hard as they could during the war.
I am grateful to be able to introduce the words to everyone at BCA Saturday School with the permission of Allen Nakamoto and his friend.

With justice and compassion, contribute to the society and its people.
Don’t assume death, nor be afraid of it.
○空
 Buddhist philosophy of Illusion.
If you are reincarnated 7 times, use your 7 lives for your country,
 The first step, a beginning
To bring about a new country, create opportunity and mobilize support.
Suppress worldly familiarity, trust yourself and live.
 Sun Tzu Military Law

What did you think when you read the words written on the national flag?

It made me think of the youths who risked their lives and headed to the battlefield, as well as my friend who is currently working in the hospitals to care for isolated patients. She is desperately working at the forefront to reduce the number of exacerbating cases. Medical personnel around the world are working for us with a sense of mission.
They are risking their own lives to protect the lives of many others.

I felt that our current situation is very similar to the situation during the war when the characters on the flag were written.
The difference is that the war was a battle between countries and people, but this time, it is the people of all countries against the virus.

No one expected we would experience such a wartime-like period.
Every time a national flag that symbolizes a country appears on the TV screen and news of the coronavirus plays, I feel ever so grateful of my routine, daily life that I spent without feeling any danger to my life.

I sincerely hope that everyone will return to BCA as soon as possible.
Until then, please stay healthy.
