Do you really need routine scheduled pest control at your home in the Pacific Northwest? Like any other routine preventive service it's a choice you make. It depends on how much you value your home and your health and your peace of mind. There are some advantages. For one it is usually safer for you and the environment to have a professional make a routine inspection and have any pesticides used be handled by licensed technicans. It isn't the best idea to store pesticides in your home either. The materials used by today's professionals are the least toxic that will be effective. Routine service means less materials are necessary. The most common pests of homes in our area are rodents and ants. Ants are more active in summer and rodents are more active in the winter. A year around schedule handles both. At Paratex we give you options - from monthly to every other month to quarterly. As long as you are a scheduled customer most requests for service in-between visits are free. For a no obligation quote quote just give us a call. We sell pest control service - but we provide PEACE OF MIND!

If you google the word "firebug" you will find lots of entries for the dangerous criminal who starts fires. And, you will find even more entries for the web development tool of the same name. There are also a few other things named firebug. But, hard to find is anything about the actual bug. There really is an insect called firebug. Today we fumigated a container of machinery being imported through the Port of Tacoma that was held by USDA because of firebugs. They are found in some North Atlantic countries such as England and also in China. They live under the bark of trees and feed on fungus. We don't want them coming into our country where they can be a destructive pest.

In today's world of heavy competition you are bombarded with slick TV ads from national companies sounding the alarm bells of destructive insects. While it's true that insects can be harmful to your health and your property, they usually aren't a reason to panic. National firms may have facts, but they may also exaggerate.
On the other hand, you might be cautious of advice from someone without an established track record in your community. It makes sense to verify the company who is giving you advice. How long have they been in business? Do they have a real business address? It isn't the time for "old wives tales" or, even what worked for "Uncle Fred" when he was a boy on the farm. You will find Paratex is the local company with years of experience in providing effective, yet common-sense solutions. Be on the lookout for those strange "vermin advisors!"

Many people in the Pacific Northwest don't come into contact with roaches unless they work in an infested restaurant or live in an infested apartment building. Their experience is often limited to a vacation trip to Hawaii or Mexico where roaches are common in plantings on the outside. If you do live in an infested area, however, there is increasing evidence that some of your allergies may be related to roaches.
And,even if you have no direct contact with these insects you may have allergic reaction because of tiny insect parts in the food you eat. ABC News recently reported there was an average of 8 insect parts found in the average chocolate bar and it was deemed safe according to FDA guidelines. Trace amounts of insect parts ground up in food can affect people with allergies and asthma, and with side effects that include migraine, cramps, itching and hives. Not a pleasant thought, but, it does emphasize why good sanitation and preventive pest control is important - not only in food plants, but in our homes as well.

People often confuse ants and termites. It is easy to tell the difference with the naked eye. Termites have a thick waist and ants have a very narrow waist. Ants have a crooked antenna and termites a straight antenna. Ants have pointed wing tips and termites rounded. As to having wings, remember both are social insects - with queens, workers, soldiers, males, females, etc. in a colony. The winged insects of either ants or termites are reproduction insects and usually seen when they are swarming out of a nest. You will often see wingless worker ants but you will not see wingless worker termites unless you break open wet wood or their shelter tubes.
As to other differences. We've noticed the difference between a Land Rover and a Mercedes SUV is the Mercedes only looks good when it's clean. And, the difference between you and your boss is if you take a long time you're slow, but when he takes a long time he's thorough.

Integrated Pest Management sounds a little silly and academic - but, it really is smart when it comes to pest prevention. It is an environmentally sensitive approach that relies on a combination of common-sense practices. This method uses comprehensive information on the life cycle of pests and their interaction with the environment in combination with available pest control methods to manage pest damage by the most economical means, and with the least possible hazard to people, property and the environment. Now if you read all that THANK YOU. What we're really promoting is PREVENTION. Eliiminate the reasons for pests to appear, use mechanical means where possible and you have less need for chemicals. We all win that way.

During the initial stage of discovery an individual is sometimes caught up in a condition of dismay. This is followed by sadness and questions. What will happen to my house or business? Will my customers all leave? Will they carry away my kids?
As a person moves into the second stage the panic starts to subside. There are more questions. You mean you really can get rid of them? And, at that low cost and without a lot of fuss?
In stage three the picture says it all. Paratex has already been there and you can see by their expression that they have peace of mind and will live happily ever after.

If you live in Iowa the experts just released the top pests to watch out for this Spring. They include Galic Mustard, widely used in Europe for medicinal purposes, but becoming a weed that crowds out wildflowers and tree seedlings. Also on the list are the Asian Carp, which escaped from fish farms in the south and is eating all the plankton that supports native aquatic life, and the Zebra Mussel, which was introduced by ocean-going ships entering the Mississippi. It clogs up water pipes.
Not on the expert's list, but mentioned by the people of Iowa are feral pigs and Minnesotans. Seems we had a few people around here that invaded from Minnesota as well, but they seemed to blend in with the Ballard crowd in snoose junction. The only pig I've seen around here was a stuffed one that came from Mexico. Guess we'll have to stick with the traditional ants and rats and moths and, well, you know what we have around here.

Large populations of these ants live in Western Washington, between Vancouver, British Columbia and Portland, Oregon. They are less common in the
semi-desert areas of the Pacific Northwest. And, they really do smell! Odorous house ants give off an unpleasant smell when crushed; some people compare it to rotten coconuts.
These ants are brown to dark brown and about 1/10 inch long. CONTROL CAN BE DIFFICULT. A homeowner may choose to hire a licensed pest control operator (such as Paratex) or apply a home formulation around the house foundation and under the siding to prevent infestation.
It is also important to keep the home or business free of food debris, exposed stored food, or pet food. Keep counter tops and appliances free of grease or anything these ants might feed upon.
Unfortunately, one application of ANY pesticide is unlikely to make them disappear. A company such as Paratex can set up a treatment schedule that is safe for you and the environment and not that expensive.

Yes, they're stirring around in Bellevue, Issaquah, Sammamish and other eastside communities around the Puget Sound area. They're called "carpenters" for a reason - they like to work in wood. If they happen to build a nest in a structural member of your house they can do some damage. Unlike termites, they don't actually eat the wood, but rather they tunnel it out to make galleries. They are often found in wood that is damp or where you have had leaks or moisture problems. They are easy to identify - any large black ant is probably a carpenter ant in the Pacific Northwest. They are natural insects around our wooded areas. It is not a reason to panic. Control is usually not difficult or expensive and they don't often do extensive damaage. If they start appearing around your place just give us a call. We're easy to work with.
