The Power of Impression

thread
The Power of Impression
Since it was stormy this morning I pulled out an old sweatshirt to wear, and did't realize what was on it until I went into the post office and the clerk said, "Oh, did you go to Harvard?" No, I assured him I didn't have the scholastic ability to enter that famous school. I do have two business friends who did and can honestly wear the shirt. (One very conservative who I see each Wednesday and the other very progressive who I see each Thursday.) My shirt came when a woman friend went to Harvard to give a talk and brought it back for me. A short time after her return we were in Victoria and walked into a shop in the Empress Hotel with some very expensive paintings for sale. The shop was full of tourists and there were two women sales people "working the crowd." Yes, I was wearing my gifted sweatshirt. All of a sudden I saw one of the women rush towards me almost knocking other people over. She was eager to help me and wouldn't take my "I'm just looking" for an answer. We quickly left the shop and I asked my friend what that was all about. "She zeroed right in on your Harvard shirt," she said. "She figured if you went to Harvard you must have money." After today the shirt is going back in the drawer.

Heat Treatments Risky for Bedbugs

thread
Heat Treatments Risky for Bed...
Some pest control companies are using heat treatments to control bedbugs. While this is a valid method we do not recommend it. Putting high heat in a building can cause damage both to the building and its contents. This morning we saw a report where a bedbug heat treatment is suspected in causing a fire in three units(in New Hampshire) and displacing the families. We also have reports of failures in controlling the bedbugs. Lastly it is way too expensive.

Paratex often uses a Vikane fumigation of the belongings. It is 100% effective in killing adults and the eggs. For information on the best method to eliminate bedbug infestations give us a call.

Halloween Pests for Real

thread
Halloween Pests for Real Halloween Pests for Real Halloween Pests for Real Halloween Pests for Real Halloween Pests for Real
Real bedbugs, spiders and rats can give homeowners nightmares during Halloween Season. As temperatures begin to drop pests may seek refuge in the very areas you least want them - your home or business. Some are actually similar to that Halloween favorite - the vampire. Bedbugs are bloodsucking pests. As they bite human skin they inject an anesthetic-like liquid that numbs the skin and allows them to bite undisturbed. In fact, humans don't usually wake up when they are being bitten. They simply find themselves scratching circular, red itchy welts in the morning. Have a great Halloween. But, if your pests turn out to be real, you know who to call.

Painted Ladies are Interesting!

There are several items that pop up with the name "painted ladies." Like nude yoga experts bodypainted in various poses. Probably the most recognized are the Victorian houses in San Francisco that were built between 1849 and 1915. They helped define the city and its charm. However, the most beautiful may be the Painted Lady Butterfly. It only has a two week life span, and during that time its main goal is to reproduce and lay eggs so the cycle can begin again. Adult butterflies lay eggs on plants like thistle and hollyhock. A caterpillar emerges in 3-5 days with very strong jaws. After 5-10 days it finds a place to rest and the skin splits revealing the pupa. The pupa stage lasts 7-10 days and inside it turns to liquid. At the end of this period, a butterfly struggles out. Its wings are soft and crumpled and it has to rest and dry its wings out. After a few hours it is ready to fly and to begin its two week life span.

Crows watch action

Crows watch action
Two displaced crows sit on a power line and watch the rainbow and the action below as work continues on the seismic retrofit of Fire Station 14 at a reported cost of over $14 million. Turner Construction has been very accomodating in sharing our dead end street with Paratex as we move containers in and out for fumigation and trucks in for delivery.

X marks the spot!

X marks the spot!
Well, we don't know exactly where the X is supposed to be but we do know researchers believe they now know the exact spot within this picture where Julius Cesar was stabbed. It was on the 15th of March in the year 44 BC. That was 2056 years ago. Thousands of Romans commute daily next to this location in downtown Rome. I remember Rome as one of the most interesting places I have ever been.

Pests Need Food!

thread
Pests Need Food!
If you're a grocer or a chef you've got just what the doctor ordered for our local pests - FOOD! (and that includes amateur chefs and grocers at home, as well) As the weather gets colder rodents and insects tend to look inside for food. that may just be in your place. DON'T INVITE THEM IN! Here are a few basic steps to keep them out:

1. Keep things clean- Any food spillage is a pest magnet.

2. Keep things tight- Caulk cracks and crevices. Seal doors and windows.
3.Guard Storage rooms- Keep food in tight containers.

4. Take fight outside - clean building perimeter of debris.

5. Trim back vegetation - Plants and bushes close to your building can provide harborage for pest and easy access for them to climb inside.

You won't want to monitor your outside perimeter when it's cold and rainy, so do it now before pests begin to move inside to avoid the weather and help themselves to your food and hospitality.

And, if you need any help with pests just give us a call.

Moses had tablets before Apple....but

thread
Moses had tablets before Apple....
only God could write on them - and, they didn't spread bedbugs. Tablets and laptop computers are beginning to spread bedbugs after they go home and are returned to school or office. They are often found in the cushioned carrier bags. Entomologists speculate the electronic devices produce heat and provide harborage. Bedbugs are attracted to body temperatures and they hide in dark places that have crevices like the edge of a bed or a cushioned tablet carrier. Tablets are often placed on or near the bed for evening reading and homework. Recently a school district IT technician found bedbugs in many of the cushioned bags that had been stored prior to the start of school. They were then stacked in a truck and fumigated with Vikane, a gas fumigant. Fumigants can penatrate the cushioned bags and rechargable ports on electronic devices to kill all stages of bedbugs, including the eggs. Vikane has been shown not to affect electronics in the devices when used according to the label.

God created spiders for Halloween

thread
God created spiders for Hallo...
There's a reason spiders begin to appear this time of year as we near Halloween. They're SPOOKY! If you look closely at the picture of this jumping spider you can even see the face of a Jack O'Lantern on its back. You are more likely to find this spider in Virginia than Washington and it is capable of catching a honey bee by jumping. Spiders are fascinating to some people, interesting to most, and terrifying to others. Most of us don't want to walk through a giant spider web like I did in the dark the other night coming into my courtyard. I knew there had to be a spider in my hair and sure enough when I got inside a found a big brown spider tangled in my hair. After the appropriate introduction, like, "Hello, spider," I dispatched him off to spider heaven where I'm sure he is much happier than he was tangled in my hair.

Bedbugs really are in Seattle

thread
Bedbugs really are in Seattle
Save the attached poster to your desktop by right clicking, then increase size to 150% and you will get a fairly good synopsis of the bedbug issue. While Seattle isn't the highest rated bedbug infested city WE GET CALLS ABOUT THEM EVERY DAY. Often, our calls relate to people who have an infestation and another company has been treating their residence by spraying alone - and, going back and back without completely eliminating them. If you know of someone with this problem tell them to call us on 800 Got Bugs. Our fumigation process with COMPLETELY ELIMINATE THEM. Most pest control companies do not FUMIGATE but only spray pesticides. Bedbugs are a problem where experience really does count.
