NO WE WEREN'T KIDDING!
Rodent activity really does increase this time of year. It's a good time to be sure all entry holes are plugged. A good place to start is around plumbing pipes under sinks. A little steel wool and foam insulation will help. Be sure pet food and bird feeders aren't attracting rodents. For a "Holiday Discount" on any commercial or residential service from now through December 31, 2014, simply mention "Holiday Discount." (offer for new customers only).

Winter is coming and someone wants in!

Winter is coming and someone...
Now is the time to prepare your home and business from unwanted creatures trying to get warm. Plug openings, like gaps around plumbing pipes under the sink. Trim outside branches that overhang the roof. Don't leave pet food outside where more than your pet will get it. If you need help give Paratex a call - 800 542 1234.

Paratex isn't Billy

thread
......and crazy about exotic pests! ......and crazy about exotic pests!
There's a reason Billy the Exterminator is on TV and Paratex isn't. Billy plays to an audience that likes the exotic and they like to be entertained. At Paratex we try to be just the opposite - just working in the background in a professional way to keep your place safe from pests.

Pemba Flying Fox Pemba Flying Fox In case you missed Halloween... In case you missed Halloween...
This is the Pemba Flying Fox, only found on Pemba Island in Tanzania, and, almost extinct. It is actually a bat and has a wingspan of almost six feet. Bats are the only mammals that can fly and most bats navigate by echolocation. These bats, however, us normal vision and hearing. Fortunately, they only eat fruits and flowers and are not vampires.

It's Spider Season!

thread
It's Spider Season! It's Spider Season!
Spiders are very interesting creatures and there are a great many varieties. People worry about the bite of a Brown Recluse or a Hobo after reports of serious illness following their bites. In reality Brown Recluse spiders are not found living in Washington State and the Washington State Health Department says Hobos are unlikely to cause dangerous bites. We do have Black Widows but dangerous bites are not that common. You are more likely to die from a bee sting. To most of us spiders are just an annoyance and a little "spooky" at this time of the year. Most are a common house spider or garden variety. Some spin very interesting webs. If you can't control them and they really are a problem for you give us a call.

Warehouse beetle found in food warehouse

When a food manufacturing customer discovered beetles emerging from sacks of flour in his warehouse Paratex was able to identify the insect as a warehouse beetle. These beetles can be a health threat as the small hairs from the larva can be found in the food product and end up in the intestines of people. Then they can cause an inflammation and infection that can be serious in some people. Quick action was taken to bring the pallets of flour to the Paratex vacuum vault in South Seattle - the only such vault in the area. In addition extreme cleaning was begun in the food plant and Paratex technicians installed monitoring pheromone traps and light traps. Just another way we protect the public's health and safety.

Landlords may be held liable for bedbugs

thread
The courts may find you liable! The courts may find you liable! Bedbugs are no joke! Bedbugs are no joke!
Bedbugs are tough. And, if you own rental properties the courts may hold you liable for the discomfort they cause your tenants. As reported in the Des Moines Register in May 2014 a class action suit brought by residences of two downtown Des Moines apartments was settled for 2.45 million dollars. It is difficult, if not impossible in all cases to determine the source of bedbugs in rental units. They can enter from adjoining units or they can hitch a ride on tenants belongings from other locations or even enter on used furniture brought into the unit.

The biggest mistake landlords make is to underestimate the problem and the difficulty of eliminating them. This is not a do-it-yourself job. Paratex has extensive experience in dealing with this pest.

Spiders - good, bad or indifferent?

thread
Hobo Spider Hobo Spider females black widow females black widow male black widow male black widow wolf spider wolf spider ordinary house spider ordinary house spider
A few people have a great fear of spiders so control is important for their peace of mind. Almost any spider can bite and have a toxin - but, in actuality few do and their bite is usually very minor. People hear about the Hobo Spider and some person who has had their flesh deteriorate around the bite. Doctors tell us most of these "insect bites" are really from another cause.

There is no one-time treatment that will eliminate spiders, at least for very long. It takes a combination of actions on the part of the homeowner or building manager and a routine service. There are no long-lasting pesticides that are effective and legal. The treatment requires routine applications around the outside perimeters of foundations, windows, outdoor lights and, occasionally inside. If routine treatments are performed outside, inside treatments should not be necessary.

Cutting back shrubbery right against house and reducing outside light (that attracts the insects spiders prey on) will help. Avoid bites by wearing gloves and long-sleeved shirts when working outside. If you do get a bite wash and put ice on it to reduce swelling - and seek immediate medical attention if your symptoms get worse.

I miss old offices at Paratex

thread
The old safe never held mone... The old safe never held money - just a few papers I still have the old Selectric I... I still have the old Selectric IBM typewriter, but no one knows how to repair it anymore.
The Paratex building in SoDo part of Seattle is historic. I am told it was first located at Pier 91 on waterfront and moved to our present site in the mid-40's. There wasn't much in the building but warehouse space when I took it over in the mid-1970's. One of the things I did was to create an old-looking office on a second floor mezzanine. It looked good at first but is now simply a junk storage room. I miss that old look.
