Paratex Employees Help Homeless

thread
Paratex Employees Help Home... Paratex Employees Help Home... Paratex Employees Help Home...
Kudos to Kevin Mayhew, who has been spending much of his time at Paratex recently fumigating containers in the cold. He recently spent his first night as a volunteer with the Union Gospel Search and Rescue Van driving the streets of Seattle handing out blankets and other cold weather aids to those sleeping on the streets. The Union Gospel estimates as many as 2,000 people are living in cars, tents or simply sleeping on sidewalks in our area. The Union Gospel Mission is the first line of defense from hunger and the cold for many of them.

Fumigating Salal Today at Paratex

Most people think of Paratex as eliminating rodents and insects from homes and business, but we also fumigate flowers. One of our customers is the Holland America Bulb Farms in Vancouver, Washington. Besides beautiful flowering bulbs the company exports salal to Japan to where it is prized in floral arrangements. Salal grows naturally in the Pacific Northwest. It's berries are also eaten for medicinal purposes. Japan requires fumigation and certification by WSDA prior to importing.

Rajah waits for Santa

thread
Rajah waits for Santa
Seven years ago I bought two dogs from a veterinarian (Bob van der Pol). The female was a cockerpoo and we named her Rani (the Queen). She was one wild girl and after she tore up my house and my office I gave her to some people on a farm. The male was a silky terrier and we named him Rajah (the King). I gave him to the daughter of a friend (who now is a freshman at the Univ of Wash). Raj is a good king who just wants to be adored. Her he is waiting for Santa to come adore him.

Fumigating chestnuts for import

thread
Fumigating chestnuts for import Fumigating chestnuts for import Fumigating chestnuts for import
This time of year we often fumigate chestnuts from China as a condition of import into the U.S. Before 1900 the American chestnut was considered the finest in the world and grew from Maine to Alabama, making up between 25 and 50% of the hardwoods. Around 1900 nursery stock of Chinese and Japanese origin was imported and a blight (fungus) was introduced. No one knew how to contain in and it spread. By 1940 all American chestnuts were destroyed. The chestnut blight is now a near-permanent fixture in American soil. Most people don't realize that at the time of the colonies in America chestnuts, not potatoes or corn, were the main source of starch. They were ground into flour for bread and mixed into a paste like mashed potatoes. The chestnuts we are fumigating this week from China are to prevent the entry of beetles, like in the picture above.

Paratex announces pest control by drones

thread
Paratex announces pest contro... Paratex announces pest contro...
If Amazon can deliver books and Domino's deliver pizza by drones Paratex shouldn't be far behind. We can send a drone to your house to inspect for rodents and insects (at least on the outside). If you want an insect identified just put it in our handy drone box and we'll bring it back and send you a text with the I.D. And, if you would like us to dispose of any rodents for you we will send a drone and you can pick the rodents up by the tail and simply deposit them in the drone rodent box and we will return them to us for disposal. As soon as Amazon gets its drone up and running (I mean flying) we will be negotiating with them to rent us a few. Yep, Paratex intends to be the "cutting edge" of pest control.

Pests Contaminate Spices

thread
Pests Contaminate Spices
Most of us like spicy food - and, most of our spices are imported. However, a new report by the FDA says about 12 percent of imported spices are contaminated by animal feces, rodent hairs, insects and disease-causing bacteria. And over a 3 year period 6.6% was contaminated with salmonella. The biggest problem was in black pepper, white pepper, curry, fennel seeds and turmeric. The countries involved include Brazil, China, India, Malaysia, Turkey and Viet Nam. Paratex works with many food importers to assist them in inspecting and handling imported foods so they are free of contamination.

Rental Trucks with Bedbugs Roll In

thread
Rental Trucks with Bedbugs Rol... Rental Trucks with Bedbugs Rol...
Bedbugs continue to spread throughout the Puget Sound area. Ineffective treatments are causing people to move from their apartments. Before they go to their new location they bring us their belongings for fumigation to be sure they don't bring them along in their clothing, bedding, furniture and other personal items. Gas fumigation is the only effective way to totally eliminate the eggs and adults. People get every make of rental truck to bring us their belongings. When they are not able to do this on their own we send our own people with a truck and we rent from Enterprise Truck Rental.
