$800K Awarded Over Bed Bug Infestation

thread
$800K Awarded Over Bed Bug I...
Reported In The Daily Record

A woman who lived for more than eight months in a bedbug-infested apartment in Annapolis has been awarded $800,000 because her landlord allegedly failed to correct the problem.
An Anne Arundel County jury deliberated 45 minutes on Wednesday before making the award to Faika Shaaban. She rented an apartment in a house owned by Cornelius J. Barrett.
The award was twice what Shaaban asked for.
Shaaban’s lawyer, Daniel Whitney, told The Capital of Annapolis that the jury sent a message with the award.
He said that when Shaaban, 66, rented the apartment in September 2011, there was an open code violation for a bed bug infestation, but Barrett did not reveal that information.
Whitney said when his client moved into the apartment the next month, she developed a rash that was eventually diagnosed as bedbug bites. “Every night, blood-sucking parasites would come into her bed and feed upon her,” Whitney said.
The lawyer said a neighbor had reported the infestation to Barrett, who did nothing. Whitney also said the city found Barrett in violation and ordered to hire a licensed, professional pest control contractor to eradicate. Barrett failed to comply, he said.
Whitney says Shaaban was evicted in June 2012 and all her bedbug-infested belongings were thrown out on the street. Some items were stolen — meaning the thieves probably got more than they bargained for.

Motor Homes Get Bedbugs Too

Motor Homes Get Bedbugs Too
Hotels and apartments aren't the only places where bedbugs are found. Paratex has a number of cars, campers and motor homes brought in for fumigation because of bedbug infestations. Fumigation with a gas such as Vikane is the surest way to rid them of bedbugs. Once aeration has been completed there is no pesticide residue and they are completely free of these pests.

Fire Truck at Paratex

Fire Truck at Paratex
No fire this time - just an open house for the newly remodeled Station 14, which adjoins Paratex. Cost for the remodel was over $14 million (so we are told). Looks like the old station to us, but with a paint job. This is a 1954 fire truck on display.

UN says we should EAT BUGS!

thread
UN says we should EAT BUGS!
The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations has just issued a 200 page report in Rome saying "insect farming" may be one way to address food security. It states 2 billion people worldwide already supplement their diets with insects, which are high in protein and minerals - and, there are environmental benefits. Raising insects produces less greenhouse gases than raising beef. OK, we knew we had lots of competition in getting rid of bugs, but now we have the whole United Nations urging people to eat them? No need to call Paratex to get rid of your bugs - just call the UN and they'll send someone to eat them.

Paratex Bans Rat Pack

thread
The rat pack that entertained us The rat pack that entertained us The rat pack you don't want ... The rat pack you don't want anywhere near your home or business
Some of us still remember the two-legged rat pack. Seems they took care of themselves and by having too much fun. The four-legged ones are still around, however. And, just like the two-legged rats the four-legged ones like to hang out together. They come in groups of six, eight and ten or more. If you see or hear one you can bet there are lots more. While you may think the four-legged variety is cute and funny just like the two-legged rats the damage they can do is no laughing matter. If they invade your home or business let Paratex ban them for life.

Paratex helps preserve Barrow Island

thread
Paratex helps preserve Barro... Paratex helps preserve Barro... Paratex helps preserve Barro... Paratex helps preserve Barro...
We frequently learn something new from customers. I had never heard of Barrow Island, 31 miles off the northwest coast of Australia in the Indian Ocean. It has the distinction of recording the strongest wind gust in recorded history at 254 mph in 1966. It is also noted for huge termite mounds. In addition to being a Class A Nature Reserve it has one of the world's largest amount of oil and natural gas. Therefore, a huge construction project by Chevron and other oil companies is going on among many rare and endangered species of wildlife. Therefore, everything imported for construction is under strict quarantine. Paratex has begun treating 44 containers of perlite being exported from Seattle. The US is one of the world's largest producers of perlite, a natural occurring siliceous rock. We are not sure whether it will be used in construction or in soil amendment on Barrow Island. The quarantine is so strict, however, that CBI, the contractor flew a representative from Australia to Seattle to observe our treatment. Everything from the empty containers to the forklifts must be treated.

Are your ants carpenters?

thread
Are your ants carpenters? Are your ants carpenters? Are your ants carpenters? Are your ants carpenters?
Among the many ants in the Pacific Northwest some can actually damage the wood structure of your home or business. Any large black ant is probably a carpenter ant. If they have wings they are reproduction ants from the colony and it means there is a nest that has been established for several years. According to Dr. Bader's popular book on natural pest cures, "These are normally beneficial insects that chew up mountains of dead wood and turn it into sawdust. However, when they get into a wood structure their damage can be horrendous. Their initial nest is established in decayed wood, however, after they get established they tend to head for healthy wood and end up doing established damage." That may be a little dramatic but it is true they can cause damage by scooping out galleries in wood to lay their eggs. And, the queen of a colony can live many years. Additionally, a large nest may cause a number of satellite nests to form. Since they prefer evergreen trees the Pacific Northwest is a prime natural home. Again, from Dr. Bader, the type of house that will be attacked includes wood frame, ones with crawl spaces, ones with cedar or plywood siding, houses more than seven years old, houses with lots of vegetation around it and houses near a forest." OK, that includes most of us! To solve an infestation give us a call.

Don't call Paratex for earworms

thread
Don't call Paratex for earworms
We get some strange requests about pests at times. Never about earworms, however. An earworm is a piece of music that sticks in one's mind so one seems to hear it even when it is not playing. Women and men both experience the phenomenon but women more and it tends to last longer for women and irritate them more (according to research). Musicians and people with obsessive-compulsive disorder are more likely to suffer from this problem. The only people we know who are thrilled with this problem are advertisers. They love it when people can't get their jingles out of their mind. As to the cure, scientists at Western Washington University found that engaging the working memory in moderately difficult tasks (such as anagrams, sudoku puzzles or reading a novel) was helpful. One researcher suggests picturing the earworm as a real creature crawling out of your head and then stomping on it. Yuk! Whatever works.

Home Ant Remedies

thread
Home Ant Remedies Home Ant Remedies Home Ant Remedies
At Paratex we like non-chemical controls for pests like nuisance ants and inexpensive methods. We are getting many calls this time of year to eliminate ants in homes and businesses. If you want to try home remedies here are a few from a popular book by Dr. Myles Bader. First, he suggests spreading coffee grounds around the outside will repel ants. Then he suggests spreading fresh mint where ants are congregating. He says the ants will now disappear. I really like his "ant dust." You mix equal parts of the following 5 ingredients: dried peppermint, rock dust, seaweed powder, alfalfa meal and cayenne pepper. He says this mixture will keep the ants away but won't kill them. Finally, he says when all else fails to eliminate ants inside the building place a piece of melon in the yard far from the house. All the ants will leave the building to get the melon. Never mind the rats this will attract into your yard. Ants are amazing creatures. There are several different species that may infest your building, including carpenter ants that can do structural damage. They are very persistent at finding the food and water they need. If your home remedies don't work - give us a call.
