出征した旧日本兵が戦地に持参し、寄せ書きがされた日章旗を遺族に返還する活動に取り組む団体がある。米オレゴン州の非営利団体「OBON（オボン）ソサエティ」。その代表レックス・ジークさんと妻の敬子さんが来日し、2日に記者会見を開いた。夫妻は「できるだけ早く、1枚でも多く返還していきたい」と語った。
団体が創設されたのは2009年。ビルマ（現ミャンマー）で戦没した敬子さんの祖父の日章旗がカナダに住む人から返還されたのがきっかけだった。
夫妻によると、米国に持ち帰られた旧日本兵の遺品は、旧米兵の家族がそのまま保管していたり、オークションに出されたりしているという。
誰も見向もしなかった活動 貯蓄切り崩し……
日章旗には持ち主の名前のほか、寄せ書きをした多くの人の名前も記されている。こうした手がかりから遺族を探し出しているという。レックスさんは「遺骨も遺品も戻らない遺族がいる。そうした遺族に発見された日章旗を届けたかった」と話す。
当初は夫妻自らの貯蓄をもとに活動していたが、19年度以降は国の遺留品調査事業を担う日本遺族会からの委託をうけ、日章旗などの返還に取り組む。敬子さんは「最初は誰も見向きもしなかったが、一枚一枚返していくことでようやく活動が広がった」と言う。
これまで遺族のもとに返還できた日章旗は427枚（22年10月末現在）。ただ、遺族らが不明で未返還のものが約2400枚あるという。
戦後77年が過ぎ、遺族の高齢化も進む。「できる限り早く返したい」と話すレックスさんはこうも訴える。「（戦没者を知る）世代で終わるわけではない。孫やひ孫の代になっても続け、次の世代に伝えていくことが大切だ」
4日には、日章旗を所持していた米国人とともに、広島県の遺族に対面して返還する予定だ。（朝日新聞・石川友恵）

【つなぐ戦争体験】（上） 寄せ書き日章旗戻る 徳之島の出征兵士と判明
「信井成章様の遺留品が保管されていたＯＢＯＮ（オボン）ソサエティから届きましたので送付いたします」―。２０２１年１月、鹿児島市で暮らす吉見文一さん（８１）＝伊仙町出身＝の元へ、一通の通知が寄せられた。遺留品とは、寄せ書きが書かれた戦時中の日章旗。どうやら、故人は徳之島の出身らしい。「旗を遺族の元へ返してあげたい」。吉見さんの遺族探しが始まった。

「ＯＢＯＮソサエティ」は米国で寄せ書き日章旗を日本に返還する活動をしている非営利団体。寄せ書き日章旗は戦時中、出征兵の武運長久（いつまでも無事であること）を祈り、身近な人々が署名やメッセージを日章旗に書いたもの。当時、日本兵の旗は連合軍兵士にとって人気の戦利品だった。近年ではインターネットオークションで売買されることが問題視され、厚生労働省が情報収集に当たっている。
ＯＢＯＮソサエティなどを通じて日本に送られる遺留品は、厚労省や日本遺族会などが資料を基に戦没者の自治体の遺族会へ照会。信井さんの旗は、日本遺族会から県遺族連合会、徳之島町遺族会へ照会されたが遺族が見つけられず、いちるの望みにすがり徳之島出身の吉見さんに寄せられた。
元高校教諭の吉見さんは、徳之島高校に赴任した縁を生かし、かつての教え子らに寄せ書きをしている人物を片っ端から照会していった。すると、信井さん当人の遺族の一人が徳之島を離れ、今は京都府で暮らしているということが分かった。早速本人と連絡を取り、信井さんについて確認した。
遺族の奥田智恵さん（６７）＝徳之島町母間出身＝は京都府宇治市在住。信井さんは父の弟だった。父方の祖母からいつも叔父のことを聞かされていた。「成章は兄弟で一番賢くてね」―。１９２３（大正１２）年生まれ。二十歳で出征し、２３歳になる年に、フィリピンのバギオで戦死した。祖母の元には遺留品が届かず、亡くなるときまで「成章はどこかで生きている」と信じていたという。
奥田さんの元に届けられた寄せ書き日章旗に、叔父を知らない家族一同も、皆驚いた。約１メートル四方ほどの絹のような素材の旗。中央の日の丸部分は別の布で丸く縫い付けられていた。
「武運長久」「撃ちてし止まん（敵を撃つまで戦いを止めない）」「兄貴頑張レ！！」―。勇ましい激励文句が描かれていた。
奥田さんは寄せ書きをしている人物を探して徳之島の知人に連絡したが、多くの人は他界していた。唯一、母の知り合いでもあった女性の署名を見つけ連絡すると「旗を見たい」という。奥田さんは徳之島の女性へ旗を送った。９３歳になる女性は寄せ書き日章旗を手に信井さんの家の墓を訪れ、「帰ってきたよ」と報告した。７７年の歳月を越え、日章旗はふるさとの地を踏んだ。

日章旗は今、吉見さんの元にある。奥田さんたっての依頼で、平和活動に役立ててほしいと送られてきたのだ。「叔父を知らないわが家の子や孫でさえ、本物の日章旗を見て（戦争の）リアルさを感じた。吉見さんの講話活動でもこの日章旗を役に立ててほしい」と奥田さんは話す。
取材中、吉見さんはすぐには日章旗を広げなかった。軽々しく触れてはいけない重い扉を開けるように、慎重な手つきで広げて見せた。その横顔には、戦争で父を失った遺族の一人として、戦没者を敬い、戦争に向き合う難しさをたたえた表情が浮かんでいた。

--Yosegaki Hinomaru were good luck flags signed by the friends and families of Japanese soldiers going off to war. Soldiers carried them close to their hearts to remind them of their homes and families. Many became war trophies for Allied soldiers, who were under orders to search dead Japanese combatants. But now, after all these years, some of the families of veterans are seeking to return the flags to the Japanese families of the men who died on the battlefield. This is a difficult and often heart-rending moment, both for the family giving up the flag and for the Japanese family receiving back a small piece of cloth that represents the return of their relative’s spirit home after more than three-quarters of a century.--

Several letters written by Japanese soldiers who perished on an island in Indonesia during World War II have been found in the United States.
The Japan-War Bereaved Families Association received a request from a U.S. nonprofit organization that has been working to return the letters from soldiers addressed to their families in Gifu, Fukuoka, and Nagasaki prefectures. Despite their best efforts, the organization has so far been unable track down some of the families.

Kosuke Kudo, 48, of the Obon Society, an organization based in the United States that works to return personal items to families lost during war, said he hopes to deliver the letters to convey the value of peace.
Howard Royal, 43, an Iraq War veteran from 2006-2007, said the letters from the Japanese soldiers were discovered by his father "all together in a leather satchel" about a year ago in his grandfather's attic in North Carolina.
Royal's grandfather, now deceased, was a U.S. Navy surgeon who is believed to have obtained the letters while exploring a cave on Wakde, part of an island group in Indonesia that was the site of a fierce battle between Japan and the United States in May 1944.

"My grandfather arrived on Wakde island after a large air raid," Royal wrote in an email to Kyodo News. "When he had free time, he would explore the island's many caves. He found these letters in one of those caves," he said, adding that in his grandfather's correspondence to his grandmother, "he didn't say whether these letters were found on Japanese soldiers or in some (hidden) location."
Royal requested the JWBFA via the Obon Society to deliver them to the addressees written on the original letters, saying he felt they ought to be returned to their families, otherwise they may never know of their existence. Of five letters found, two were successfully returned to their respective families.
Of the three remaining men's letters, locating their families is proving difficult. One letter dated Sept. 21, 1943, and written by Naoichi Takagi is addressed to his wife in the town of Oroshi (currently part of Toki city, Gifu Prefecture). He writes to her that "Now, for the first time, I want to thank you from the bottom of my heart."
Takagi asks her to "competently raise" the couple's three children "with your own hands."
Another, written by Iwao Harada to a lady who appears to be his mother, Mrs. Tome Harada from Inasamachi, Nagasaki Prefecture, reads, "I believe participating in the Greater East Asia War and becoming a heroic spirit to protect the country is the greatest act of filial piety."
The final two letters are the written "wills" of Torakichi Yano from Fukuoka Prefecture, with one addressed to his wife and children, the other to his parents.
According to the JWBFA, all three men belonged to the army's independent field anti-aircraft 40th company and died on Wakde Island on May 20, 1944.
Gifu Prefecture's Bereaved Families Association is searching for Takagi's surviving family members, but a man believed to be his son appears to have moved away from Gifu some 20 years ago, making his whereabouts unknown. Similar obstacles in finding the families of Harada and Yano have occurred.
While residential records kept by local governments can be used as clues to find the family members listed in the addresses, significant holdups can occur due to the necessary undertaking of bureaucratic procedures associated with disclosing personal information.
Royal, who himself lost many friends on the battlefield in Iraq, said he hopes to "return these items to the families that they were meant for."
Commenting on the discovered letters, the Obon Society's Kudo remarked that "There are now only a handful of people who experienced the war, so it is important to let the next generation learn about the value of peace through mementos."

This past Tuesday, October 11, 2002, I had the honor of attending a ceremony to return a yosegaki hinomaru to the family of a Japanese soldier in the small town of Sefuri-machi in Kanzaki City, Saga prefecture.
As a PhD student in Japanese history, I have been studying the return of personal items of Japanese soldiers taken as war trophies during WWII since 2018, but this was my first time attending a return ceremony in person.
Satou Yoshiko received the flag of her brother-in-law who died in WWII, Satou Morio. The ceremony took place at the school he had attended as a boy in Sefuri-machi. She stated that they never received his remains and had no other personal effects of his left, so this is a precious last relic.
This ceremony was unique because it marked the first time that a war souvenir was returned to Japan from an American military institution, the New Mexico Military Museum. During WWII, the 200th Coast Artillery, based out of New Mexico, became a part of the Bataan Death March, and the legacy of that experience still lingers in the local community.
It is especially powerful that this community and the New Mexico National Guard decided to repatriate the flag. To me, this return is not only a gesture of peace and friendship between the US and Japan, but an act of empathy - a choice to see Japanese soldiers and their families as not fundamentally different from American ones, but the same. A choice to recognize their shared desires to mourn and honor their deceased loved ones.
In a video message played at the ceremony, Margaret Garcia, the daughter of a Bataan Death March survivor who was instrumental in returning the flag, stated that the flag is being returned not just to a person, but from one community to another.
After the ceremony, I saw community members gather to look at the flag and read the messages, which had been transcribed into modern Japanese. Some recognized the names on the flag as neighbors or family members. I could feel the connection between the local community and the deep history of the flag, and I felt that Margaret Garcia’s words were correct.
What it means to honor the dead, especially those who died in battle, is a question that can be fraught with political, cultural, and emotional tension. But acts of empathy, like returning this yosegaki hinomaru, have a way of connecting people across generations and cultures, to remind us of not only our shared grief and loss, but also our shared humanity.

この式典は、ニューメキシコ軍事博物館というアメリカの軍事施設から、戦利品である遺品が初めて日本に返還された、特別なものでした。第二次世界大戦中、ニューメキシコ州を拠点とする第200沿岸砲兵隊はバターン死の行進の一員となり、その体験は今でも地元に遺恨を残しています。この地域社会とニューメキシコ州兵が旗の返還を決定したことは、とても大きな意義があります。

亡くなられた方、特に戦死者を称えることは、政治的、文化的、そして感情的な緊張を伴う問題にも成り得る。しかし、この寄せ書き日の丸を返すという思いやりの行為は、世代や文化を超えて人々をつなぎ、悲しみや喪失感を共有するだけでなく、人間らしさを共有することも思い出させてくれるものなのです。
出征兵士の日章旗が遺族の元へ 「戦争あってはならぬ」思い強める
第2次世界大戦に出征し、22歳で戦死した秋田県美郷町（旧六郷町）の藤岡長右エ門さんが戦地に携えた日章旗が14日、おいの深田重雄さん（65）のところに戻ってきた。深田さんは「帰ってこられてよかった。戦争はあってはならない」との思いを強くした。
町によると、藤岡さんは8人兄妹の長男。陸軍に所属して出征し、1944年にニューギニア・ホーランジアの密林地帯で部隊（約450人）のほとんどとともに戦死したという。
日章旗はB25爆撃機の操縦士だった米兵が戦地から持ち帰り、譲り受けた子どもが米国の返還活動団体を通じて日本遺族会に連絡した。町の調査で、重雄さんの母である深田アツ子さん（86）が藤岡さんの妹だと判明したという。
町役場であった返還式では、町遺族会の立ち会いのもと、松田知己町長が重雄さんに手渡した。日章旗は地元荒川地区の自治会が贈ったものとみられ「祝応召 藤岡長右エ門君 荒川常会一同」とあったが、かすれていた。全体が薄茶色に変色し、一部に濃いシミがつき、左下は破れていた。
