![盛岡タイムス／76年の時を経て...]()
盛岡市旧新田町（現夕顔瀬町）出身の戦没者・谷藤幸二郎さんの日章旗が、７６年の時を経て、遺族の元に帰還した。日章旗は、出征者の無事を祈り直筆で署名やメッセージを寄せ書きしたもの。「祝・壮途 谷藤幸二郎君」「忠誠」「忠義は黙して行ふべし」「不死身」などの願いがしたためられていた。
幸二郎さんは、暁２９４８第三揚陸隊所属の陸軍兵長。１９４４年６月２５日に、ニューギニア・ゲンエイムで戦死したという。
日章旗は、太平洋戦争時に米軍第５空軍の戦闘機パイロットだったラルフ・キッチンズさん（２０１７年１０月逝去）が、沖縄で米陸軍兵士から譲り受けたもの。今回の返還は、娘のメアリー・ジョンソンさん＝米国フロリダ在住＝が父の遺志を受け継ぎ、オレゴン州の非営利組織ＯＢＯＮソサエティに依頼し、実現した。
ＯＢＯＮソサエティは、０９年発足。欧米諸国を中心に、寄せ書きされた日の丸の持つ意味を正しく伝え、返還を通じた平和啓発に取り組んでいる団体。代表者はレックス・ジークさんと京都出身の敬子・ジークさん。
１６年にメアリーさんから返還依頼を受け、旗の文字の書き起こしが行われた。
記されていた「新田町第一町内会」に着目し、捜索範囲を盛岡市に絞った。２０年１１月に市内関係機関に協力を依頼したことから、國雄さん、勝利さんが遺族であると判明した。
２６日、市役所会議室で日章旗返還式が行われた。
谷藤裕明市長と、幸二郎さんのおいにあたる谷藤國雄さん（７９）、佐藤勝利さん（７７）、県遺族連合会の甘竹勝郎会長、盛岡市遺族会の工藤新悦会長、夕顔瀬町第一町内会の平野耕一郎会長が出席。谷藤市長から國雄さんに、幸二郎さんの出征を見届けた日章旗が手渡された。
谷藤市長は「遺留品である日章旗を７６年の時を経てお返しでき、喜ばしい。温かい思いに感謝し、平和の尊さを継承したい」とあいさつした。
旗を受け取った國雄さんは「各団体のお力添えに深く感謝いたします」と謝意を示し、「御霊（みたま）と一緒に旗が帰ってきた。叔父の記憶はないが、若くして亡くなったと聞いていた。供養してあげたい」と感慨深げな面持ちで語った。
式では、レックスさん、敬子さん両代表とメアリーさんのビデオメッセージも紹介された。
メアリーさんは「戦争は恐ろしいもの。運よく父は帰ってこられた。幸二郎のこと、気の毒に思う。お返しできてよかった」とコメントを寄せた。

太平洋戦争でアメリカ兵が戦利品として持ち帰ったとみられる日章旗がインドネシアで戦死した岩手県盛岡市の男性のものであることがわかり、２６日、遺族のもとに返還されました。
この日章旗は、昭和１９年６月にインドネシアのニューギニア島で戦死した盛岡市の谷藤幸二郎さんのものです。
２６日、盛岡市役所で返還式が行われ、谷藤市長から遺族の谷藤國雄さん（７９）と佐藤勝利さん（７７）に手渡されました。
日章旗は、アメリカの非営利団体がフロリダ州在住の元アメリカ兵の持ち主の娘から５年前に依頼を受けて調査を進めたところ、記載されていた地元の町内会の名称や寄せ書きをした親族の名前などから、幸二郎さんのものであることが判明したということです。
持ち主の娘、メアリー・ジョンソンさんは動画でメッセージを寄せ、「返還に時間を要し申し訳なく思っています。ご遺族の安らぎとなることを願っています」と話していました。
遺族の２人は、幸二郎さんの直接の記憶はないということですが、國雄さんは「幸二郎の母親の墓前には息子がみ霊とともに返ってきたよと報告しました。みなさんの協力に感謝しています」と話していました。
また、佐藤さんは「『青天の霹靂』とはまさにこのことだと思いました。よく返ってきたなというひと言に尽きます」と話していました。
日章旗の返還に取り組むアメリカの非営利団体「ＯＢＯＮＳＯＣＩＥＴＹ」などによりますと、太平洋戦争中、日本兵が持っていた日章旗は戦利品としてアメリカ兵が持ち帰ることが多かったということです。
この団体では日本遺族会などと連携して子や孫などから譲り受けた日章旗を遺族に返還する活動を１２年前から行っています。
アメリカ国内での活動の浸透もあり、これまでにおよそ４００枚が遺族の元に返還されたということです。

The George C. Marshall Foundation in Virginia recently sent a flag to OBON to search for the rightful owner, this is part of a growing return of artifacts from museums. Cathy DeSilvey, the director of the foundation’s recently closed museum, several years ago came across the flag.
“As I researched the flag to write a text label for it, I realized what a significant spiritual item it is,” she said in an email. “Our museum is not its true home, and (it) belongs to the family of the solder. This is when I became aware of the Obon Society, and of the complicated museum conversation about repatriating artifacts.”
Also in this article, Dionne Blaesing successfully returns the flag.
Blaesing's uncle, Neil Edgar Huard, served as a staff sergeant in the U.S. Army’s 32nd Infantry Division in the Pacific and returned home to Michigan with a Yosegaki Hinomaru flag. At the age of 96, Huard had passed. Dionne found the flag while sorting through old boxes and contacted OBON.
The flag belonged to Noriatsu Yamaguchi's, a Japanese army captain. OBON located the family and returned the flag to Yamaguchi's daughter, Noriko Koishi. Koishi was only 9 years old when her father departed for war in 1944. Koishi and Blaesing contacted each other through letters, where Koishi thanked Blaesing for returning the spirit of her father.

戦争遺留品返還式／令和3年2月9日（火）
戦争遺留品の返還式が滋賀県公館で開催されました。
このたび、県内3名の方の戦争遺留品が御遺族に返還されることになりました。本市では、故山田芳蔵様の日章旗が、戦後75年の時を越えて返還されることになり、大変喜ばしいことであります。今回の返還式に立ち会えたことで、戦争の無い平和な世界を築くことの大切さを改めて感じました。戦没者の皆様に追悼の誠を捧げますとともに、御霊の安らかならんことをお祈りします。

What is new with OBON?
Due to COVID-19, we weren't able to do any traveling, so we decided to take this time to focus on organizing OBON's foundation! Since the pandemic, people have been inside and cleaning out their home, which led to many donating flags.
During the last year, OBON SOCIETY has received 291 flags!
Last year, in July of 2020, OBON began the original series "Intimate Stories." The set of personal accounts of those in America helps showcase the viewpoint of those who are returning flags. Since we started the series, we were able to share over 35 unique and individual stories!
A closer look at: Episode 26- Dale Denton
"I'm going to do at least the most honorable thing I can do, and I'm going to return it because it meant something to somebody."
Dale Denton recalls seeing the good-luck flag as a teenager and found out it was from her uncle Victor who was in the Army who had brought it back after WWII. She believed it was a simple souvenir from the war.
During house cleaning for her father, she found the flag again and began to wonder what the flag was and what it meant. After digging, she realized the true meaning behind a good-luck flag and said, "this isn't a souvenir..."
More digging led Dale to find OBON SOCIETY, where she donated the flag in hopes of returning the flag to the family.
"It's beautiful when we can make connections with each other... This is a very meaningful connection." Dale says after sharing her story.

【寄稿】滋賀県知事 三日月 大造
「健康しが」をめざして 平和への誓いを新たに暦では５日が「啓蟄（けいちつ）」。まだまだ寒い日もありますが、少しずつ、日差しの中に春の気配が感じられるようになってきました。
春は別れと出会いの季節です。コロナとともに、コロナを乗り越え、新たな一歩を踏み出せるよう、一日一日を大切に過ごしてまいりたいと思います。
さて、先日、滋賀県公館において、「戦争遺留品返還式」が執り行われ、私も立会させていただきました。
今回、滋賀県ご出身である三名の方の遺留品が、関係の皆様のご尽力により、ふるさとへ戻ってまいりました。出征にあたり、多くの方から寄せ書きされた日章旗、日々の行動記録が記された軍隊手帳を、私から、ご遺族の皆様にお返しさせていただきました。戦後七十五年を経て、ふるさと滋賀へ戻ってこられた御英霊の御霊に、改めて心より哀悼の誠を捧げます。
「戦争遺留品返還式」にて。戦争の悲惨さ、平和の尊さを痛感しました。
返還式では、滋賀県遺族会相談役の國松善次元知事より、「これらの遺品は無言ではあるが、戦争の悲惨さ、平和の尊さ、友好の大切さを、誰よりも何よりも訴える力をもっている。ぜひ次の世代に伝えてほしい」とのメッセージをいただきました。改めて、滋賀県知事として、このことを深く心に刻みたいと思います。
戦争体験の風化が懸念される今日、二度と戦争の惨禍を繰り返さないために、私たちは、先の大戦において国内外で犠牲になった人びとに思いを寄せ、戦争の悲惨さや平和の尊さを学び続けなければなりません。
東近江市に滋賀県平和祈念館を開設してから、来年で十周年を迎えます。これまでに収集した資料は四万点以上。また、二千人以上の方に戦争体験などを語っていただきました。貴重な資料や証言から紡ぎ出される平和への願い。この思いをしっかりと受け止め、次の世代へ語り継いでいくことが私たちの使命です。
平和と友好の輪が世界に広がるよう、頑張りましょう、共に…。

寄せ書き入りの日章旗など、太平洋戦争や満州事変に出征して亡くなった3人の遺留品が9日、滋賀県公館で遺族らに返還された。米軍兵士が戦地から持ち帰るなどして米国にあったもので、返還活動を続けるオレゴン州のボランティア団体「OBON（オボン）ソサエティ」と県遺族会の協力で実現した。
遺留品は計3点。日章旗が2点あり、サイパン島で戦死した岡田勘平さん=米原市=とフィリピン・レイテ島で戦死した山田芳蔵さん=東近江市=のものだったという。もう1点は、満州事変に出征して帰国後に亡くなった辻英次さん=甲賀市=の軍隊手帳。
このうち山田芳蔵さんの日章旗は、東近江市の元健康福祉部長、山田明宏さん（61）が受け取った。数年前に同市で返還式に携わったことがあり、「まさか自分が受け取る側になるとは」と驚いていた。
芳蔵さんは、明宏さんの祖父の弟。遺骨は戻っておらず、明宏さんは「若くして戦死してかわいそうだった」と語る祖父の姿を覚えている。「こういう形で故郷に帰ってこれた。祖父が生きていたらどれほど喜んだことか。ゆっくり休んでほしい」と話した。
辻英次さんの軍隊手帳には、日々の行動などがきれいな字できちょうめんに書かれていた。英次さんの兄の孫、善明さん（56）が受け取った。
英次さん兄弟は、善明さんの祖父も含め3人が戦死した。善明さんの祖母も約20年前に亡くなり、当時のことはよくわかっていない。善明さんは「親戚と手帳を読んで、どういういきさつだったか考えてみたいです」と語った。
小学1年生のときに父が戦死し、現在は県遺族会とOBONソサエティの橋渡し役を務めている国松善次元知事（82）は「返還された品々は無言だが、戦争の悲惨さ、平和の尊さ、そして友好の大切さを雄弁に語っている。次の世代にぜひ伝えてほしい」と話した。
