Do & Don't 〜英会話において〜
欧米人と日本人の会話において、いろいろなDo（積極的にやるべし！）とDon't（聞いちゃダメ！）があります。
Don't: Invasive questions!! Boooooo!!!!
Questions about:
- age
- weight
- boyfriend/girlfriend
- religion
◆Don't say a person's name and then make a joke in Japanese about them
聞いてはいけないこと：
-年齢
-体重
-彼氏／彼女の有無
-宗教
◆その人がいる前でその人の名前を言って、その内容を日本語で話す（しかも笑い話）、ということは自分の名前を言われているのは分かっても内容が分からない外国人にとっては非常に気分が悪いです。

これらDon'tであげたものは、すべて日本人がつい聞いてしまったりやってしまっていて、欧米人は嫌な気分になります。
でも考えてみると、こういうことって日本人同士で聞いたりやったりしますか？
普通に日本人同士で会話をしていたら、普通聞かないようなことを欧米人に聞く、というのは変な話です。
これから英会話をするときに、その質問を日本人にもするかどうか、を考えてから質問するといいですね☆

ひとこと英会話。ピンと来る・来ない
今日のフレーズは、That doesn't ring a bell.
意味は、思い当たらない、ピンと来ない。
This is a figurative way of saying that you have no memory of something; that you have no knowledge of it. In other wards, a bell doesn't ring in your brain.
a. I'm sorry. That name doesn't ring a bell.
b. Let me know if any of this rings a bell.
c. The sight of her rang a bell in my mind.
a.ごめんなさい。その名前に心当たりはありません。

Berabera Class Report
いよいよ３月になりました。いろいろな目標に向かってラストスパートです！
７日のベラベラクラスでは、買物に関するフレーズをたくさん習ったようで、使えそう♪役立つ！という意見をたくさんいただきました♪
"holic"は中毒なので、shopaholicになっちゃダメですよ。借金地獄になります！
では今週のフレーズです☆

■Beginner Class■
・ I started training my replacement yesterday but it was harder than I thought.
昨日から仕事の引き継ぎを始めたのですが、思った以上に大変。
・If so, many women are possibly shopaholic.
（Shopaholicはただの買物好きの人を意味するのか？）その程度だったら多くの女性はshopaholic（買物中毒）かもしれない。
・ I'll say "yes" depending on my feeling at that time.
そのときの気分によってはyes.
・ The facilities are becoming older as time goes by. / The facilities are degenerating as time goes by.
設備は時間とともに老朽化してくる。

ひとこと英語；sell like hotcakes
今日の英語は、sell like hotcakes.
意味は、飛ぶように売れる。
The popularity of hotcakes results in them selling exceptionally well, giving rise to "selling like hotcakes" being used in reference to any item that sells especially well.
a. Just before Christmas toys for children sell like hotcakes.
b. The new electronic device began selling like hotcakes the day it appeared on the market.
c. The new item sold like hotcakes for a few days, and then died.

お待たせしました！前回のベラベラクラスでは、桜の話をされたんでしょうか？もうすぐ桜の季節ですもんねー、たのしみです♪
花粉症の人には辛い季節ですが。。
会話している最中に文法的に大きな間違いがあったらDebbieはすぐに訂正します。でも全ての間違いを指摘して行ってしまうと会話が成り立たなくなるので、小さい間違いはあまり訂正をしません。日本語でもちいさな間違いをすることありますよね。それと同じでnative speakerも間違った英語で会話をしたりしています。
あまり間違いに気を使いすぎないで、会話を楽しんで下さいね。

◆Beginner Class◆
・ Cherry blossom and samurai have a short period of beauty "momentary" in common. So they're attractive to Japanese people because they're matching with Japanese sense of beauty.
桜とサムライの共通点は、美しく咲く期間は短く「はかない」ことで、それが日本人の美意識と合っているから魅力に感じる。
・ Japanese plum blossom can be smelled in a broad area.
梅の花は広い範囲で香る。
・ The color of cherry flower is light.
花の色が桜は薄い。
・ I think cherry blossom and samurai are similar because they are both momentary.
桜と侍は、命がはかないところが似ていると思う。
・ Cherry blossom front means the forecast of blossoming. Japan is a long shaped country so days of blossoming are different in each area. I check the cherry blossom front by TV and then decide the day of Hanami party.
桜前線とは、桜の開花予報のことです。日本は細長いので桜が咲く日がちがいます。テレビで桜前線をチェックして花見の日にちを決めます。

ひとこと英語：sharp cookie
意味は、頭の切れる人、抜け目のない人。
Someone who is very intelligent and very quick mentally is often referred to as being "a sharp cookie", probably because cookies are especially tasty and "hit the spot."
- a. Everyone in that software company is a sharp cookie.
- b. That girl is determined to marry a sharp cookie.
- c. To get into that company you have to be a sharp cookie and aggressive!

Berabera Class report!
前回初めてレッスンを受けたTさんから「和気あいあいとしていて、間違えても大丈夫、という雰囲気が暖かい」というコメントをいただきました。

・ I feel a little bit bad to put wild animals into zoos. But because I heard zoos protect threatened/endangered animals so now I think it's a good idea. （野生の動物が動物園に入れられるのは、かわいそうな気もする。でも動物園で絶滅危惧種が保護されるって聞いたので、それはいいことだと思う。）
・ I had something to do so I had to visit my acquaintance's house. （ちょっと用があって、知り合いの家に寄った。）
・ Depending on the kind, the pattern is different. （（猫の話について）種類によって柄が違います。）
・ Thank you for your hard work. （（毎週細かい作業をしているDebbieに）ご苦労さまです。）

・ By any chance, does the story end like "the snake appeared in your house is now your pet"? No, no, I don't think so. （その話の結末はひょっとして、「家の中に出没したヘビは、今では我が家のペットになっている」ですか？なんて、そんなことはあるわけないですよね。）
・ It doesn't sound fun to spend lots of money (after I heard he had to attend three weddings). （それはお金がかかって大変ですね。）
・ The dog bit its owner when its meal was put in front of it （その犬はご飯を前にしたとき飼い主を咬んだ。）
・ Shugi Binbou （祝儀貧乏）
これは、英語にはまったくない表現(T_T)なので、「祝儀貧乏」がどんなものなのか、を説明する英文を紹介します。
・ On Japanese wedding, we usually give the couple "Oshugi or Shugi (gift of money)". If the couple is my friend, I'll give them averagelly ＼30,000. So this month, I have 3 wedding parties, so I'll be poor because of Oshugis. We call this situation as "Oshugi Binbou". （日本の結婚式に出る場合、出席者はお祝儀と呼ばれるお金を結婚する夫婦に渡します。友達の場合なら平均３万円です。だから今月私は３つ結婚式に出るのでお祝儀のせいで貧乏です。こういう時のことを日本語で「お祝儀貧乏」と言います。）
・ I heard that many of whale watchers can't actually watch whales. （ホエールウォッチングに行ってもクジラを見ることができない人が多いと聞きます。）
・ He is out of control when he's angry. （彼は怒ると手がつけられない。）

ひとこと英語。
今日ご紹介するのは、Take a stand。
意味は、立場をはっきりさせる。
To assume a position, either physically or intellectually, in some situation, in a fight, on questions of morality, politics, etc.
a. You have to take a stand on this matter. You can't stay on the sidelines forever!
b. We are being sued so we have to take a stand.
c. Once my girlfriend takes a stand nothing will move her.
ａ．この問題について立場をはっきりさせなさい。ずっと関係ないなんてありえないんだ。
b.訴えられた以上立場をはっきりさせなければ。
c.彼女がこうと決めたら何も彼女を動かせない。

Berabera Class report!
今週（２月２１日）のレッスンのために準備しておくことをDebbieから言われたと思いますが、ここにも載せておきますので確認をおねがいします！
On Saturday we are going to write a "mini essay" for 20 min during class.
The topic for this "essay" is animals.
You can write about any kind of animal/your pet.
Please keep the info about the animal in your head. Practise writing it at home!!
（今度のレッスンで、２０分間ミニエッセイを書いてもらいます。テーマは「動物」。どんな動物でもいいしペットでもいいです。エッセイを書いてもらうときは何も見ずに書いてもらうので、家で練習をして来てください。）

・Can beginners like me join the tea ceremony?. （そのお茶会は、わたしのような未経験者でも参加できますか？）
・"Konkatsu" is an activity that singles look for a partner for marriage. For example, they attend "Omiai (marriage meeting", do speed-dating, or join a service centre which introduces other singles. Even the city encourages singles to get married. （「婚活」は、独身者が結婚相手を探す活動です。例えばお見合いやお見合いパーティーに参加したり、紹介サービスにはいたりします。市でも後押ししています。）
・As a mother, I'm worried about my daughter because she lives far from me. （娘が離れて住んでいるので親としては心配です。）

・I think it depends on the person you fall in love with, wether it is a man or woman. （好きになった相手が男か女だったかによると思う。）
・I have terrible hay fever, so in spring my eyes are terribly itchy but I can't scratch my eyes with my hands. （私は花粉症がひどいので、春になると目の中に手を入れてポリポリ掻きたいくらいに目がかゆくなります。）
・I also have to sniff all the time, so my nose is red like Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer. （さらに、鼻をいつもすすらなくてはいけないので、鼻がまるでトナカイのように赤くなってしまいます。）※赤鼻のトナカイは、英語でRudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeerという固有名詞があります。
・My ideal woman is a woman who has similar values to me and we can respect and improve each other. （理想の女性像は、価値観が同じで、またお互いに尊重し合いともに成長していける女性です。）
・I hate the people who always bash away and say bad things forgetting their own faults. （私は、自分のことを棚に上げて人の悪口ばかり言う人が嫌いです。）

ところで、ある生徒さんから質問がありました。
「日本語で考えた文を英訳しようとすると、一つの文に複数の内容が混ざってしまってうまく訳せません。どのように整理して表現（英訳）したらよいですか？」
わたしの場合でも参考になればと思いお答えさせていただきますね。
前々回のレポートに書いたように、日本語は主語がなくても通じる部分が多いです。逆に英語は主語が絶対必要です。なので、英訳するときにはまず何が主語(S)になるのか、を考えます。主語の次は動詞(V)です。
その２つを最初に整理しておくと、うしろは日本語で最初に来やすいこと、つまり言いたいこと、を並べると、英訳がしやすいのではないかな？と思います。
英語の語順と日本語の語順がほぼ逆なので、日本語から訳そうとすると、Vをさがすために日本語を最後まで書かないと（考えないと）、英語でつまってしまいます。これがメンドクサイ。こう思ったら、もう英語脳になっちゃったほうが早いしメンドクサクナイ！
