Founder & CEO, Pacific Software Publishing, Inc. (PSPINC)
Bellevue, Washington

Kenichi Uchikura is the founder and CEO of Pacific Software Publishing, Inc. (PSPINC), a technology company based in the Seattle area. After graduating from Azusa Pacific University in 1983, he began his professional career in Japan before being assigned to establish his employer’s Seattle subsidiary. That international business experience laid the foundation for his entrepreneurial journey.

In 1987, Uchikura founded PSPINC, building the company into a long-standing provider of software development, web hosting, business communications, and SaaS solutions serving clients in both the United States and Japan. Originally known for Japanese software localization and cross-cultural technology services, PSPINC evolved alongside the growth of the Internet into a provider of digital infrastructure, custom web applications, and business communication platforms.

For nearly four decades, Uchikura has focused on helping organizations leverage technology to improve communication, strengthen customer relationships, and expand business opportunities. His work reflects a commitment to innovation, practical problem-solving, and fostering business connections between Japan and the United States.

the Texas Central Shinkansen

thread
the Texas Central Shinkansen
Americans often ask, “Why can’t the U.S. build bullet trains like Japan?”

The funny thing is — America absolutely has the technology. This is the country that landed on the moon and builds some of the world’s most advanced aircraft. The problem is not engineering. The problem is trying to build anything that crosses hundreds of miles of land in America.

In Japan, the Shinkansen became national infrastructure. In the U.S., a project first has to survive lawsuits, politics, environmental reviews, budget fights, and people arguing online for 10 years.

Japan thinks long-term. America often thinks one election at a time.

Then there is culture. Japanese cities were built around trains. American cities were built around cars. In Japan, people walk to stations. In America, some people drive to the gym to walk on a treadmill.

Still, things may be changing. Traffic is getting worse, airports are exhausting, and younger generations are more open to rail transportation.

If the Texas Central Shinkansen project succeeds, Americans may discover something dangerous:

Traveling without TSA lines, airport parking, or highway traffic is actually enjoyable.

I hope they make it.

Japanese Weapons

thread
Japanese Weapons
Japan is slowly changing its long-standing defense policies and beginning to export weapons and military technology to friendly nations. This is a major shift for a country that maintained a very strict pacifist position after World War II. From a business point of view, this also means Japan is opening an entirely new area of exports and international industrial cooperation.

One question many people ask is simple: “How good are Japanese weapons if they have never really been tested in war?”

It is true that modern Japanese military equipment has little real combat history. Unlike American, Russian, or Israeli systems, Japan’s weapons have not been used extensively in major wars. Because of that, nobody truly knows how they would perform under actual battlefield conditions.

However, that does not automatically mean they are weak. Japan has one of the world’s most advanced engineering and manufacturing industries. Japanese destroyers, submarines, radar systems, and missile technology are often considered extremely advanced and reliable.

Still, real war tests more than technology. It tests logistics, maintenance, leadership, and how systems perform under stress and damage.

Japan’s Self-Defense Forces are highly trained and closely work with the United States and allies. But until real combat happens, their true capabilities remain unproven.

And honestly, I hope we never have to find out.

Anime and Car Otaku Post

thread
Anime and Car Otaku Post
Anime and Car Otaku Post

The Toyota AE86 Corolla Levin became world famous through the anime and movie Initial D. For many people around the world, the AE86 and the Toyota 4A-GE engine became symbols of Japanese car culture itself. The lightweight rear-wheel-drive Corolla drifting through mountain roads introduced an entire generation to Japanese performance cars.

But many anime fans and car otaku outside Japan may not realize that the legendary 4A-GE engine did not end with the AE86.

Toyota continued developing the 4A-GE for many years after the AE86 production stopped. What started as a 1.6L DOHC 16-valve engine evolved through multiple generations including the Bluetop, Redtop, Smallport, Silvertop, and finally the famous Blacktop version near the end of the 1990s.

The final 20-valve Blacktop engine was incredibly advanced for its time. It featured individual throttle bodies (ITBs), variable valve timing (VVT), higher compression, and an 8,000+ RPM redline. Even though it was still only a 1.6-liter naturally aspirated engine, it produced around 160–165 PS without turbocharging.

My personal favorite 4A-GE-powered car is the Toyota MR2 AW11. While the AE86 became famous for drifting, the MR2 showed another side of Toyota engineering. The lightweight mid-engine layout combined with the high-revving 4A-GE made the AW11 MR2 feel almost exotic for its time. The sound of the engine right behind the driver made the driving experience completely different from the AE86.

Ken Uchikura Newsletter Vol. 388 Upcoming Business Trip to Japan in June

thread
Ken Uchikura Newsletter Vol. 3... Ken Uchikura Newsletter Vol. 388 Thumbnail

Upcoming Business Trip to Japan in June

I’m traveling to Japan in June for a business trip. My itinerary starts on the eighth, departing from Seattle and arriving at Kansai International Airport (KIX) on the ninth. I'll spend my first week in the Kansai area, then head to Tokyo via Shinkansen on June 14th. After spending a week in the Tokyo area, I'll return to Seattle from Narita on June 20th.

In the past, I visited Japan four to five times a year. However, due to recent health concerns, I couldn’t visit as frequently. Feeling much stronger after excellent medical support and a steady recovery, I’m gradually increasing my business travel back into my schedule. If you’re reading this and see potential collaboration opportunities, or if you’re interested in expanding your business into the U.S. market, I would love to meet during this trip.

I’ve been running PSPINC in the U.S. since 1987. With nearly four decades of experience in the U.S. market and corporate landscape, I’m eager to share my insights and discuss how we might work together.

For my stay in Tokyo, I’ll be staying at Hotel New Otani, rather than the usual business hotels from previous years. While hotels near train stations are certainly convenient, the room sizes are a bit tight for me. I'm looking forward to the extra space and a more comfortable environment to recharge between meetings.

I’m happy to be flexible with my schedule in Tokyo. I can meet you anywhere within Tokyo, or we can find time to meet at the Hotel New Otani or its surrounding area.

I’m truly looking forward to new encounters and the business opportunities this June trip will bring. Please feel free to reach out—I’d love to hear from you.

My First Car?

thread
My First Car?
My First Car?

My first car was a 1970 Toyota Corona four-door sedan.

And yes — it had a column shifter.

Many younger people today may never have seen one. The gear shift was attached to the steering column instead of the floor, and the front seat was a full bench seat. Cars from that era had a very different feel from modern cars.

One thing I clearly remember was the parking brake. It was not between the seats like today’s cars. It was mounted underneath the dashboard, and you pulled it outward to engage it. Releasing it required another handle. Very mechanical. Very analog.

I drove this Toyota Corona after it was bought used for me.

Compared to today’s vehicles, it was primitive. No power windows. No touchscreens. No computers controlling everything. The windows were opened by turning a hand crank. Air conditioning was still commonly called a “cooler” in Japan back then.

But honestly, driving felt more real.

You could feel the engine vibrations, the road, the shifting, and even the weight of the steering wheel. Modern cars are smoother, quieter, safer, and far more advanced — but many also feel isolated from the actual driving experience.

Japan in those days was still in its high-growth era. Owning even a used car represented freedom and possibility.

Looking back now, that old Toyota Corona may not have been impressive by modern standards, but to me, it represented independence. And sometimes I still remember the feeling of moving that column shifter with my right hand while driving through Japan decades ago.

What was yor first car?

Mazda’s Gram Strategy

thread
Mazda’s Gram St...
Mazda’s Gram Strategy

Mazda is famous for its “Gram Strategy,” the idea of reducing car weight one gram at a time.

Instead of only looking for big weight reductions, Mazda engineers examine every part: bolts, mirrors, seats, brackets, body panels, and even small interior pieces. One gram may seem meaningless, but when thousands of parts are improved, the total weight reduction becomes significant.

Mazda used this thinking in cars like the MX-5 Miata and Mazda2. Mazda’s engineers focused on removing unnecessary weight from every component without sacrificing reliability or performance.

The lesson is simple: improvement does not always come from one massive breakthrough. Real progress often comes from hundreds or thousands of small improvements accumulated over time.

That philosophy applies directly to software and SaaS systems as well.

At PSPINC, we take a very similar approach to system development and operations. We constantly look for small inefficiencies, unnecessary processes, wasted bandwidth, extra clicks, slow database calls, redundant code, and anything else that adds friction to the user experience or operational cost.

One optimization by itself may not seem important. But when you improve thousands of small things, the entire system becomes faster, more stable, more secure, and easier to maintain.

Good engineering is not always about adding more.
Sometimes it is about removing one gram at a time.

Japanese

thread
Japanese
Japan being an island nation made an enormous difference in how Japanese culture developed — much like the Galápagos Islands evolved separately from the mainland.

Because Japan was geographically isolated by the sea, outside influences entered slowly and selectively. Ideas from China, Korea, Europe, and later America certainly arrived, but Japan often absorbed them carefully, modified them, and transformed them into something uniquely Japanese.

This isolation allowed Japan to preserve:

* its language
* social structure
* traditions
* aesthetics
* seasonal awareness
* strong group-oriented culture

At the same time, island life also encouraged a mindset of limited space, cooperation, order, and dependence on the surrounding environment. Living on narrow islands prone to earthquakes, tsunamis, and harsh seasons shaped a culture that values preparation, discipline, cleanliness, and social harmony.

Like the Galápagos, Japan did not evolve completely alone — but it evolved differently because of separation.

That is why many aspects of Japanese society can feel familiar to outsiders on the surface, yet fundamentally different underneath.

When Vending Machines Become Lifelines

thread
When Vending Machines Become L...
When Vending Machines Become Lifelines

Japan is famous for its vending machines—found on nearly every street corner. But beyond convenience, some of these machines serve a much more important role during emergencies.

After disasters like the Great Hanshin-Awaji Earthquake, Japan began designing infrastructure that could adapt in times of crisis. One example is the disaster-response vending machine (災害対応自販機).

When a major disaster strikes, selected machines can switch into “emergency mode,” making drinks inside free for the public. This can be activated remotely by operators such as Coca-Cola Japan or DyDo Drinco, or manually by local authorities.

What makes these machines especially effective is their ability to function even when normal systems fail. Many are equipped with backup batteries and cellular communication, allowing them to receive signals and operate during power outages. Even if the grid is down, the machine can still unlock and provide water.

This is critical because access to clean drinking water becomes an immediate issue after disasters. Stores may be closed, and supply chains disrupted. These vending machines act as decentralized, instant supply points without needing staff.

Not every machine has this capability, and supplies are limited. But the concept reflects a uniquely practical approach: design everyday systems to become emergency solutions. In that moment, a simple vending machine becomes something far more valuable—a lifeline.

Japan Learned From Disaster

thread
Japan Learned From Disaster
Japan Learned From Disaster

When the Hanshin-Awaji Earthquake hit in 1995, many areas lost water service for weeks or even months. From that painful experience, Japan learned an important lesson: after a major earthquake, water is life.

Today, Tokyo has underground emergency water storage tanks placed throughout the city. There are reportedly 213 tanks, located so that most residents have access to one within about 2 kilometers of their home.

Each tank stores drinking water for emergencies. Some tanks hold 100 ton of water. Access points are often located at schools, parks, and public facilities.

This is not just infrastructure. It is preparation based on real experience. Japan does not only rebuild after disaster. It learns, improves, and prepares for the next one.
