日本への輸出業務 再開？

23年前、Pacific Software Publishing, Inc. は米国から日本への商品輸出を行っていました。主にMacintosh向けのソフトウェアパッケージの輸出が中心でした。Mac用のソフトウェアは、直販だけでなく、日本国内の代理店にも卸売を行っていました。また、Sunntoの時計やApple Watch（現在のApple製品ではありません）の日本向け代理店としても活動していました。さらに、当時はNike Airの靴なども朝から並んで購入し、日本に送った思い出があります。

しかし、時代が進むにつれて国際的な商品価格の差がなくなり、送料を加味すると利益が出ないビジネスになりました。そのため、このビジネス自体が衰退し、撤退することとなりました。その代わりに、ウェブホスティングビジネスに進出し、SaaS事業へと展開してきました。

国際的な輸出入・物流ビジネスにはまだチャンスがあるのでしょうか。確かに、米国で手に入る商品の多くは日本でも購入できます。しかし、私が日本で探しても、自分のサイズの洋服や靴を見つけることはなかなかできませんでした。まだまだ日本と米国の間にはギャップがあると考えています。そのギャップを埋めるようなビジネスモデルは存在しないのでしょうか。

本日で会社を設立してから36年が経ちます。この節目に、かつて米国と日本の間での輸出入・物流ビジネスに取り組んでいた当時の思いを取り戻し、再考してみたいと思っています。

23 years ago, Pacific Software Publishing, Inc. embarked on exporting goods from the United States to Japan. Our main focus at that time was exporting software packages for Macintosh computers. In addition to direct sales through our website, we also engaged in wholesale distribution to our valued partners and agents in Japan. We also served as a distributor for Sunnto watches and Apple Watches (not the current Apple products). I have vivid memories of lining up early in the morning to purchase popular items like Nike Air shoes and shipping them to Japan.

As time went on, the diminishing price gaps and the inclusion of shipping costs made it increasingly challenging to maintain profitability in the international trade and logistics business. Consequently, we made the difficult decision to withdraw from that line of business. In its place, we ventured into web hosting services and expanded into the SaaS (Software as a Service) industry, which we have continued to pursue.

Is there still an opportunity for international trade and logistics business between the United States and Japan? While many items available in the United States can now be purchased in Japan as well, I have found it difficult to locate clothing and shoes in my size when searching in Japan. I believe there is still a gap between Japan and the United States that needs to be addressed. Is there a business model that can bridge this gap?

Today marks the 36th anniversary of the establishment of our company, and it compels me to revisit the sentiments I had when I first started this journey. I would like to take this opportunity to reconsider the possibilities of engaging in international trade and logistics business between the United States and Japan.
