What is Social Listening?

thread
What is Social Listening?
With marketing, monitoring people's responses is just as important as creating content.
it is just as important to create content as it is to monitor people’s responses. Without knowing how your audience feels about your content, the harder it will be to create engaging and relatable content. That’s where social listening comes in.

Social listening refers to monitoring social media channels for your brand mentions, competitor brand mentions, and related keywords. With social listening, you’ll get more valuable insight into how customers feel about your brand and your products, their pain points, areas of improvement, and future expectations.

How to Build Your Social Listening Strategy

newyork search on tiktok
It’s easy to say you’ll monitor your social media channels and stay up-to-date on what else is going on in your industry, but building an effective social listening strategy includes more actionable steps. When building your strategy, it’s best to keep these in mind:
  • Know your customer persona: know who you’re trying to attract and what platforms they use.
  • Identify pain points: discovering what problems and gaps exist in your products and overall industry will help better address and potentially solve those frustrations in the future.
  • Choose strategic and relevant keywords to monitor: creating a list of keywords to look for that are relevant to your company and industry will help narrow down what to look for and streamline your social listening tasks overall.
  • Create guidelines on how to engage: whether it’s a negative review or a positive comment, having a template on how to respond will simplify this task in the future.

Benefits of Social Listening

commenting on instagram post

There are so many tasks involved in marketing for a business that it may feel overwhelming to tack one more to the list, but social listening will give you more insight into your customers and how to improve your current marketing efforts. Some benefits of social listening include:
  • Understand your audience: get valuable feedback on what your audience likes and what other interests they have that could help inform your future marketing campaigns.
  • Performance insight: learn more about how customers feel about your brand and where you could improve in the future.
  • Crisis management: in cases of growing criticisms about your business and/or products, you can start seeing the signs early on, preventing it from turning into a fully-fledged crisis.
  • Increased opportunities: monitoring social conversations around your industry will identify industry trends, influencers, and people who already love your brand and love telling people about their experiences, i.e. your brand advocates.
  • Customer acquisition: join the conversation your audience is having, but don’t outwardly sell; instead, develop relationships with potential customers by sharing helpful information and slowly nurture those relationships into leads.

Marketing today is about much more than just trying to outwardly sell for your business; it's about developing relationships with your customers and nurturing them into leads.
Social listening is an invaluable part of that process, and it will make your overall marketing efforts much easier moving forward. For more marketing help for your business, reach out to our expert marketing team and get started with one of our budget-friendly marketing plans.

Bluesky Opens Up to the Public: How It Could Change the Social Media Landscape

thread
Bluesky Opens Up to the Public...
On February 7, social media platform, Bluesky opened to the public after previously being an invite-only platform for almost a full year. The invite-only strategy allowed Bluesky to grow slowly as its developers worked on building out the service. Bluesky was first announced in 2019 by none other than Jack Dorsey, as a side project to build a decentralized standard for social media when he was still the CEO of Twitter (now X).

What is Bluesky?

bluesky app opening on phone next to mug of coffee

Many are calling it Twitter 2.0, as it closely resembles the platform from before Musk took over. However, there’s one big difference: it’s decentralized. What that means is that instead of the company storing users’ data on their own servers, independent servers store user data, giving users more control over their overall feed. Instead of an all-encompassing algorithm, users can create their own servers and switch without losing their data, according to Bluesky’s CEO, Jay Graber.

However, decentralized social platforms already exist, with the most popular one being Mastodon, due to its focus on discussing various topics. While popular with over 8.7 million users by October 2023, it isn’t nearly as easy to use because of how tech-heavy it is, with multiple servers, making it hard to navigate. Much like Mastodon, Bluesky offers multiple different servers, but switching from one to the other is seamless, and the overall interface is very reminiscent of Twitter’s old interface.

How Bluesky is Different from Other Text-Based Alternatives

threads app on a smartphone

After opening the platform to the public, Bluesky announced users could follow the Super Bowl game without hearing about Taylor Swift, which accelerated its overall growth by 1.6 million new users, bringing Bluesky's total user list to 4.8 million users. Then there’s Threads, Meta’s text-based offering, which is arguably the largest of the alternatives currently out there. But while it has the largest user base thanks to how easy it is to move your account from Instagram to Threads, it hasn’t captured the discussion aspect that X (previously Twitter) is known for.

What Bluesky aims to do differently is bridge the gap between the decentralized network and focus on the discussion aspect of Mastadon while delivering a user-friendly experience that Threads offers. While Mastadon, Threads, and various other platforms seek to replace X, they have yet to succeed for a multitude of reasons. With Bluesky eliminating the invite-only aspect of the platform and focusing on the lacking factors in other platforms, it may just have the potential to be a legitimate replacement for X.

Marketing Analytics: Key Metrics To Look Out For

thread
Marketing Analytics: Key Metri...
Utilizing data analytics in marketing is vital to succeeding. With its ability to analyze and even predict data, it can do wonders in perfecting marketing strategies, saving time and money, developing a better understanding of your customers, creating better-performing content, and optimizing marketing channels. The challenging part of marketing analytics, however, consists of how marketing data has changed over the years. It’s also hard to figure out what marketers should look out for since there’s so much data easily available to you. Every platform has its own nuances, so there are different key metrics marketers should look out for.

Key Metrics on Google Platforms (Analytics/Ads)

a person holding white ipad mini

Website Performance Metrics

  • Traffic (Page Views): a metric that measures how many times a single user views a page
  • Most visited pages: a metric that breaks down what the most visited pages are to website visitors
  • Search ranking: a metric that shows your website's position in the search engine results page (SERP) for a specific query
  • Unique visits: a metric that counts the number of visitors to a website, but only counts their first visit
  • Conversions: a metric that counts an important user action like making a purchase, filling out a form, signing up for a newsletter, etc.

(Paid) Digital Ad Metrics

  • Impressions: a metric that measures the number of times a user sees the ad.
  • Click-through rate (CTR): the percentage of people who click on the ad, determined by dividing the number of clicks by the number of times your ad is shown and multiplying that number by 100 (impressions). The higher this number is, the better.
  • Cost-per-click (CPC): a metric that measures how much it costs each time someone clicks on your ad. The lower this number is, the better.
  • Conversions: a metric that counts an important user action like making a purchase, filling out a form, signing up for a newsletter, etc.
  • Conversion rate: the percentage of people who convert (purchase, fill out a form, sign up for a newsletter, etc.), determined by dividing the number of users who convert by the overall size of the audience and multiplying that number by 100.
  • Engagement rate: the percentage of people who engage (click, like, share, comment, etc.) with your ad, determined by dividing the total number of engagements by the total number of followers and multiplying that number by 100.

Key Metrics on Other Marketing Platforms

person holding smartphone with apps shown: facebook, snapchat, instagram, twitter, chrome, gmail, spotify, messenger

Social Media Metrics

  • Total reach: the number of users that saw your content (also known as impressions).
  • Likes: the number of people who like your content.
  • Views: the number of people who view your content.
  • Comments: the number of people who comment on your content.
  • Shares: the number of people who share your content.
  • Followers: the number of people who follow your account.
  • Subscribers: the number of people who subscribe to your account.

Email Marketing Metrics

  • Open rate: the percentage of people who open your email, determined by dividing the number of people who open your email by the number of people who received the email and multiplying that number by 100.
  • Click rate: the percentage of people who click on links within your email, determined by dividing the number of people who clicked on links in your email by the number of people who received the email and multiplying that number by 100.

Aside from just the mass amount of marketing data there is to analyze, other challenges include the difficulty of reading through that analytical info. Just like all marketing, it continues to change and evolve over the years. That’s why we provide bi-weekly reports in all our marketing package plans, making it easier for small businesses everywhere to market their business.

Marketing With Short-Form Videos

thread
Marketing With Short-Form Vi...
Over the past few years, short-form videos have become more popular, especially with the rise of TikTok, Instagram Reels, Facebook/Instagram Stories, and YouTube Shorts. As technology has continued to progress, people have become more accustomed to the conveniences it has to offer, and their attention spans have also shrunk along with it. Many social media platforms have taken notice, so short-form videos have become more valued in their algorithm when it comes to what users are more likely to see on their timelines.

8 Steps to Start

close-up photo of person holding his black headphones and video editing software open on his computer

  1. Start with research: just like every marketing endeavor, it always starts with research. In this case, look at what your competitors are doing and see what you can use in your own strategy.
  2. Experiment: discover which trends, themes, and overall tones work for you. Don’t be afraid of trying out different content ideas and getting creative.
  3. Schedule your videos: find the right posting frequency that will work best for your brand.
  4. Repurpose your content: instead of starting from scratch, see what you can reuse from the content you’ve already created and posted. Maybe it’s part of a blog post or a clip from a longer YouTube video.
  5. Find the right blend: determine how often to post each type of content using what you learned from your research and experimenting steps.
  6. Keep your online community in mind: create good social content by looking at what types of content your audience responds to — what kinds of content do they want to see from you?
  7. Humanize your brand: feature your employees, show behind-the-scenes content, and lean into humor. People want to know the people behind the brand, not just what you’re selling.
  8. Engage with your audience: interact with users in your comment section and encourage people to engage with you.

Luckily for marketers, creating short-form videos on social media is easy and will help increase brand awareness, drive engagement, and capture people’s attention. It’s also a much more cost-effective way to market your business since these videos will only be anywhere between three seconds to one minute long. Plus, you can even reuse some of the marketing content you’ve already created, which will also cut down on the time you’ll spend creating short-term videos.

How Meta's New Lawsuit Will Affect Marketing Towards Young People

thread
How Meta's New Lawsuit Will ...
On October 24, 2023, 41 U.S. states and the District of Columbia sued Meta, alleging their social media platforms, namely Facebook and Instagram, knowingly contributed to the youth mental health crisis. In the lawsuit, they claim Facebook and Instagram are not only addictive and harmful to young users through numerous features like copious alerts, notifications, and infinitely scrolling feeds. They also claim these features “negatively impact teens’ mental health”, specifically because they encourage social comparisons and promote body dysmorphia through likes or photo filters.

What This Means for Marketers

group of friends using a smartphone

Ultimately, regardless of where this lawsuit goes, other social media platforms may feel inclined to add more features and/or privacy settings designed to restrict usage on younger users. With the reality of social media platforms likely enforcing more regulation through features and default privacy settings over younger users, social media ads and posts may not reach much of their younger audience. Therefore, marketers should:

  • Market on other social media platforms specifically designed for younger people. Ex: Snapchat, YouTube Kids, TikTok, etc.
  • Focus on creating engaging content - for organic social media content, engaging content performs best with younger users, so use that to your advantage. The more young people interact with your engaging organic content, the more it'll show for similar users, like others in their age group.
  • Partner with influencers - young people are more likely to trust recommendations from their favorite influencers and engage with their content. This can also include popular celebrities among your target demographic.
  • Determine where else your audience is online - social media may take up a lot of young people's time, but it isn't the only place they're spending their energy online. Find out what other websites they're browsing and advertise there instead.
  • Target an older audience instead - even if you usually target a younger audience, it's possible you're missing out on revenue you could be earning from older potential customers.
This concern over young kids using social media and the effects it has on their mental heath isn’t a new one. In 2021, a Facebook whistleblower who was later revealed as Frances Haugen leaked internal research, proving Meta knew the negative effects their social media platforms made on young people. In response, Instagram said they were working on features that would combat this. However, it’s hard to know what tech companies can do to improve it. Even then, this concern won't go away, so it's important that marketing professionals are proactive in how they market young people.

Why Threads Hasn’t Taken Off (Yet?)

thread
Why Threads Has...
Back in July, Meta (the company behind Facebook and Instagram) released Threads, their text-based social media platform after weeks of speculation that would directly compete with X (formerly Twitter). Because of how easy it was for users to sign up, ten million people joined the app within seven hours of its launch according to Mark Zuckerberg, Meta’s CEO.

But now, more than three months later, Threads’ popularity has dwindled. Sensor Data reports that at its peak, 44 million daily active users were on Threads. Just a few weeks later, at the end of July, there were only eight million daily active users—an 82% drop. Many users have stopped posting and many have even forgotten about the platform altogether. Largely due to the fact that it just isn’t built out enough with the robust features that users crave on social media.

Lack of Popular Features

a smartphone with the threads logo on it

Every popular social media platform has its own niche, along with key features. However, Threads is still missing a lot of those features, including but not limited to a Discover page, direct message functions, and the ability to share Threads posts via Instagram direct messages, among others. It wasn’t until the end of July when Threads rolled out a Following feed and it wasn’t until August when Threads released a web version for desktop users. The other unknown thus far is whether Meta will expand their advertising network to Threads. Meta is known for being great for advertisers, but unless their daily active user count goes back up, advertisers may not be willing to spend advertising dollars on Threads.

While they’re going in the right direction in terms of working on adding more features, Threads is still missing something that will make them stand apart from their competitors. Many saw Threads as the direct competitor to X, and the fact that users’ accounts could connect to their Instagram pages and bring over their following was an attractive asset, but it wasn’t enough to keep users on the platform. Overall, many have theorized that Meta released Threads quickly when users were looking for a better alternative to X. Unfortunately, developers hadn’t really built out the program enough to really retain users on the platform. While Meta developers continue to work on adding more features to the platform, it may be a while before users will consider Threads to be a real threat to a platform like X.

Sell Directly on Social Media with Social Shopping

thread
Sell Directly on Social Media w...
The world of shopping online changed drastically when Instagram implemented a buy button in 2015. The next year, brands could tag products with a price tag in their images. Then, Facebook followed shortly afterward by launching Marketplace in 2018. And TikTok started testing TikTok Shop in November of last year.

However, reports are that TikTok is gearing up to launch TikTok Shop Shopping Center, which will become their e-commerce platform, taking TikTok Shop a step further. Rather than just buying directly from videos, lives, and creator profile bios, TikTok Shop Shopping Center won’t just be a marketplace for other retailers to sell merchandise, but a retailer itself. The details are still not entirely clear, but if successful, it could shake up social shopping as we know it.

Benefits of Social Shopping

friends standing with shopping bags on street and looking at phone

Not only are there billions of active social media users, but they’re also spending more and more time on social media. As of 2022, users spend an average of 151 minutes a day on social media, which is up from 147 from the previous year. And social commerce generated about $724 billion USD in 2022. Both according to Statista. Directly selling on social media just further expands your overall reach to more potential customers. And since social shopping makes so much in revenue, we know how successful businesses can be on it.

Social media, as a whole, is great for obtaining social proof. Especially since many customers look at things like reviews and use those to base their decisions on whether they’ll buy something. Making your products available to users on social media just makes it possible for more feedback, reviews, and recommendations for your business. It also makes it easier for users to convert to paying customers because they don’t have to leave the app to purchase. So, regardless of how TikTok’s upcoming TikTok Shop Shopping Center changes things, it’s safe to say social shopping is here to stay.

Grow Your Business with Social Media

thread
Grow Your Business with Socia...
Social media marketing is an invaluable asset to include in your digital marketing plan. It’s an easy but effective way to grow your business online. Most entrepreneurs today know how vital it can be to their business. But it’s what you do with social media that can make a real difference in how effective it can be. It’s not as simple as creating profiles on social media platforms; it’s about what you post.

There are currently billions of social media users worldwide. That only increases the number of potential customers and adds to brand awareness. It’s relatively inexpensive, and it gives you the opportunity to:

·         Build your brand
·         Grow your community online
·         Increase website traffic
·         Engage with your online audience
·         Learn more about your customers
·         Discover where to improve your overall business strategy

9 Social Media Marketing Tips

1. Create SMART Objectives

We’ve talked about SMART objectives here before, but when you do create them, make sure they align and inform your overall strategy. Every business’s objectives will be different, depending on the size of your business. Making sure your objectives are specific, measurable, attainable, relevant, and timely will help you grow your business sustainably.

2. Add relevant keywords to your social copy

Hashtags can be great, but they’re not the only thing social media algorithms parse for. They also look for relevant keywords in social media captions. Marketers still debate if hashtags are even effective marketing-wise on social media. For some, it helps increase overall exposure, for others, they don’t report any discernable difference. But adding relevant keywords to your captions will make it more likely that your posts will end up on someone’s For You or Explore page.

3. Target users

The great part about sponsored social posts is that you can easily target the right users to see your content. And finding the right users makes it much more likely they’ll purchase from you because it’ll show for users that are actually interested in what you’re trying to sell. While you can try to sell your products to everyone, the reality is that not everyone wants or needs what you’re offering. Plus, if you’re trying to sell to everyone, your ads end up being vague and uninspired, which won’t convince anyone to buy from you.

4. Focus on brand intent

Social media’s a great way to promote your products. But if all your posts are promotional, your business comes off sounding like a pushy salesperson. And no one likes that. Instead, focus on creating and curating content that shows people what your brand cares about.  It won’t just give potential customers a better idea of what your company stands for, but it also results in a much more interested audience.

5. Market on multiple social media platforms

There are multiple major social platforms out there, and marketers alike use more than just one. Each one has something different to bring to the table, including a different audience. So, use that to your advantage! You can tailor your approach toward each platform, taking advantage of the best types of content, posting times, and posting frequencies.

6. Create an editorial calendar

To make it easier, you can plan content in advance with an editorial calendar. On it, add specifics like images, captions, hashtags (if you’re using them), links, and whatever else you want to add to your social posts. But remember, you don’t have to stick to what you have; it’s also encouraged to post something spontaneous sometimes. Especially since sometimes they perform better than what you already have planned.

7. Optimize your posting frequency

When marketing on social media, it’s not just about what you post, it’s about when. There are plenty of sources out there that recommend what times and days of the week work best for reach and engagement. But what works for others won’t necessarily work for you. So, try testing out different times and different days to see what works best for each platform. That way, you’ll get the most out of your social media marketing efforts for your business.

8.       Create paid social ads

The way social media algorithms work is mysterious, but the one thing we know for sure is that paid social posts are guaranteed to get seen by more users. So, if you’re having problems with increasing overall reach, invest in paid social ads. Or you can boost or promote an already well-performing post. Regardless, research shows sponsored posts perform better on social media. Just don’t focus all your efforts on it; organic social posts still help tell your brand story online.

9. Interact with your audience online

Lastly, interacting with your followers and potential customers should be a vital part of your marketing plan. Engagement on social media is highly valued by each platform’s algorithm, so replying, reacting, and reposting other users’ content will increase your profile’s overall exposure. And it’ll encourage other users to do the same.
