What is the Metaverse?

thread
What is the Metaverse?
By definition, the metaverse is a virtual reality space where users can interact with a computer-generated environment and other users. Culturally, it’s becoming a much bigger buzz word. Especially now that every big tech company is announcing that they too are joining the metaverse. But what is the metaverse really?

In the most simplistic terms, it’s a virtual world that includes a mix of virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR). Before this past year, the metaverse felt like some sci-fi term that could someday become our future. But when huge companies like Meta (previously Facebook), Microsoft, and Roblox start talking about how they’re investing in “metaverse economies” and creating virtual reality internet, you know it must be a big deal. And for other large tech companies that seemed to miss the metaverse boat, most of them are just trying to scramble up whatever they can to catch up with everyone else.

How Tech Companies are Building Out the Metaverse

As of right now, users can play video games, socialize, and take part in a digital economy. However, as exciting as all this sounds, it all sounds a lot like what you can do with a lot of video games already. Namely, Fortnite. Epic Games (the Fortnite creator) is definitely building parts of the metaverse in a big way but now tech giants like Meta (formerly Facebook), Microsoft, Roblox, Nvidia, and many more are starting to do the same.

Eventually, they want the metaverse to become an entirely virtual world in itself. For example, Meta posted a video about where they wanted to see the metaverse go. In the video, a woman goes from seeing a snippet of a concert on her Instagram feed to virtually joining the crowd, despite the fact that the concert was occurring on the other side of the world. Mark Zuckerberg even goes on to say that the metaverse will eventually include the capability of interacting with digital objects in the physical world, which will “respond and react realistically”. More than that, they’re actively working on it with the help of Spark AR.

The Potential Pitfalls of the Metaverse

a man wearing a vr headset while also holding two controllers in his hands

While it all sounds great and exciting, it doesn’t mean it doesn’t come with its drawbacks. While the inventor of PlayStation, Ken Kutaragi, completely dismisses the idea of the metaverse, he does bring up a very good point. There’s one very big issue with the metaverse. One that tech giants have largely avoided: VR headsets.

They’re somewhat clunky, uncomfortable to wear for long periods of time, and can even cause pain to users. Or as Kutaragi puts it, “annoying”. Especially those who get motion sickness easily. In Meta’s video, they don’t show how users entered the metaverse. And they may have done that on purpose. Many users in the video were shown wearing glasses, but AR glasses have certain limitations that simply wouldn’t work for the metaverse.

But realistically, the metaverse continues to build into an all-encompassing virtual world, it will continue to excite the tech industry worldwide. As long as they can figure out their headset problem and figure out how to price it all at an affordable price. It’s already got companies like Meta, Google, Apple, Microsoft, and many more fighting to gain relevance in the future that will be the metaverse. Someday soon, we may just see the metaverse as the new internet.

PSPINC What's New Newsletter Vol. 100 "Attracting Customers with your Website"

thread
PSPINC What's New Newslette...
I want to attract people to my website. There are many ways to do that like advertising online or optimizing the site for search engine optimization (SEO), but have you thought about something more basic? Before you think about how to better attract people towards you site, have you ever thought about why you go to a website? What website acts as your homepage and what pages do you visit the most often?

In 2021, the most visited websites were:

someone on their phone open to the TikTok app

    1. TikTok

    1. Google

    1. Facebook

    1. Microsoft

    1. Apple

    1. Amazon

    1. Netflix

    1. YouTube

    1. Twitter

    1. WhatsApp

As you can see, these sites are designed to attract people. Their content is updated every hour, every minute, and every second of every day. However, you’re focused on getting users to come to your company’s website, more specifically, your homepage. Moreover, your goal is to get traffic that is comparable to these sites.

a look at website traffico n a tablet

Even if the amount of website traffic towards your site is small, you need to update the content on your site frequently if you want to see that number increase. It’s important to give your customers a reason to come back to your site time and time again. And you can do that by regularly posting new information that is important to them.

Next, it’s also important to promote your site through mediums other than your own website. This includes eliciting reviews of your products and/or services and publicizing your activities on social media. A website that’s left unwritten won’t attract people. If you want more people to see your website, it goes without saying that you need to provide them a reason to see it.

PSPINC What's New Newsletter Vol. 99 "Authenticating companies with domain names"

thread
PSPINC What's New Newslette...
Why do companies, organizations, and sole proprietors have websites with their own domain names? Have you ever wondered why you need a unique domain name for your website? The answer is simple. It’s to drive awareness towards the existence of your company.

There are many ways to share information about your company. There are numerous social media platforms like Facebook, Yelp, Twitter, Instagram, LinkedIn, YouTube, and many more to do just that. However, it’s hard to authenticate your company’s presence just on these platforms. It’s easy to create a page on any of these social networks. Anyone can do it, and they can do it for free. So, it’s unfortunately not clear proof that the company really exists just from social media profiles alone.

A domain name, on the other hand, belongs to the company or organization that registered it. No one else can have it because of that. Additionally, SSL certification guarantees the company’s existence while also encrypting communications. To authenticate the information you have on Facebook, Yelp, Twitter, Instagram, LinkedIn, YouTube, and any other platforms you use, you’ll need to operate a website with your own domain name. So, naturally, you should also run your email on the same domain.

While Gmail is convenient, it goes without saying that it’s more trustworthy to use your domain name in your email. But it’s also useful to note that you can use your domain name for your email but still use Gmail to send and receive emails. If you have any questions about getting a domain name and creating a website, please contact Pacific Software Publishing, Inc. at any time.

PSPINC What's New Newsletter Vol.74 "DENREI"

thread
PSPINC What's New Newslette...
Vol. 74

We are currently developing a system called DENREI at Pacific Software Publishing, Inc. DENREI is an email-based social media platform. I’m sure you don't understand what I'm talking about. I'd like to start by telling you what social media is.

The job of the media is to communicate your ideas and information to others. Social media is an easy way to communicate information to people who are interested in what you have to say. Social media in general refers to systems like Twitter and Facebook. These systems use a browser-based website or an App on your phone as a means of communicating information.

The current problem is that the companies running these services are censoring information as if they are publishers, not media. There have been many instances of deleting users' posts and revoking users' access rights. The first of these major problems is that anyone can see what a user posts. You can specify that you don't want to see it, but that can be a pain in the ass.

DENREI is not a social media service like Twitter or Facebook, where anyone can see what you post at any time. Creating an account with DENREI means having an @DENREI.COM email address. Only people with an @DENREI.COM account will be able to read the information you send out via email. Of course, @DENREI.COM users can freely exchange emails with each other.

You can't send emails to @DENREI.COM from any email address other than @DENREI.COM. If you want DENREI to send email to your subscribers, just send an email from your @DENREI.COM address to your @DENREI.COM address.

This is an overview of DENREI. More information will be released soon, and we hope you will join us for the beta test.

3 Business Trends to Follow in 2019

thread
3 Business Trends to Follow i...
We are past the halfway mark for 2019 – so now is a good time to assess which trends are changing and what to follow.

1. Continued Distrust in Facebook

O.K. So this isn’t exactly a surprising trend. Facebook has consistently been in news headlines this year. But, even with all the bad press, Facebook still boast an impressive 1 billion active users.

Understanding users’ distrust while still using the platform to promote your business, organize events, and connect with users can be a fine line. We suggest that companies watch this trend and if you haven’t already – start expanding your online presence to other social platforms.

2. The Decline of “Experts”

Everywhere you look individuals and companies are all claiming to be “experts” in their fields. The title has become oversaturated and has lost most of its sparkle. If we are all experts then there is nothing to differentiate ourselves from each other.

Keep your eyes out for changes to the term “experts” as more companies expand their focus and vocabulary.

3. Customer Success

Look for this to become a new trend during the rest of the year. Customer success is the idea that companies can help customers get the most value from their products or services. Using digital media, companies can follow up with customers, beyond their purchases, to ensure that the customers are getting the most value from their product or service.

This can take several forms, including how-to videos, blogs with more detailed information or tips, teaching seminars for products/services and much more.

What we Learned from Facebook’s Privacy Breach

thread
image source: pixabay.com image source: pixabay.com
Last year, Facebook founder and CEO, Mark Zuckerberg, was asked to answer questions from congress regarding improper privacy practices, but how well do you know the backstory?

Facebook’s trouble came when the New York Times published a story about election consultant, Cambridge Analytica, gaining users’ personal data via Facebook. Cambridge Analytica saw opportunities from a Facebook app, “This is My Digital Life,” to give out personality tests to users. The app, which users downloaded, harvested personal information from the users and their friends. The professor who made the app gave the information to Cambridge Analytica so they could influence users with targeted ads during the presidential election.

So why was Facebook responsible for this privacy breach?

Facebook knew that Cambridge Analytica had gained the data and requested Cambridge Analytica delete it. But in reality, the data was never deleted and Facebook neither followed up nor went public about this incident back in 2015.

The moral of the story is: When we have any sort of privacy breach, small or not, as a business owner it is very important to come clean to your customers, take the necessary actions, AND FOLLOW UP! It’s not an easy thing to admit you made a mistake, but in the long run it’s the only way you can retain your customers’ trust and stay out of hot water.

The other moral of the story is: Be wary of surveys or personality tests or even seemingly innocent quizzes on social media platforms. It’s best to ‘not click on’ or download any new apps or give out any information because you don’t know if the source or app developer can be trusted.

Why is my Company's Facebook Reach Declining?

thread
image source: pixabay.com image source: pixabay.com
Facebook had a rough year in 2018 and it’s hasn’t gotten any better so far in 2019. They acknowledged their mistakes and rolled out some changes to the news feed.

Like Google, Facebook determines how posts rank and which ones show up first in your news feed. In an effort to ‘save Facebook’ Mark Zuckerberg has implemented changes that cut back on showing posts that aren't from users' friends and family.

Since Facebook is now scoring personal posts above business posts, the change has been costly to companies trying to increase customer engagement. They've seen a significant drop in organic Facebook reach throughout the year.

What does this mean for your business?

Essentially, your company’s Facebook posts will (on average) be shown to only 2 - 5% of your audience. If you have 1,000 followers, that means only 20 - 50 of them will see your post. Our company has seen a stark drop in engagement this past year on our own social pages.

Companies will be looking for ways to get those numbers back and the fastest way to do that is paying for ads. We expect ad prices to start going up as more companies look to broaden their reach in non-organic ways. The good news is there are still ways to grow your organic reach:

1. Focus on the quality of your content instead of the quantity.
2. Facebook is putting more focus on ‘meaningful discussion’ so get engaged with users, reply to comments, rather than simply liking posts or comments.
3. Don’t oversaturate your page by posting too often. At most, you should post once a day but studies have shown that posting less than that doesn’t hurt your reach.

On top of everything, Facebook continues to deal with pressing issues like questions from congress over user privacy and an outage last week that lasted over 12 hours. Facebook is home to over 1 billion users and we don’t see that changing anytime soon. But the social media landscape is quickly changing and companies will have to adapt and work harder in order to get the same results that came so easily only a few years ago.
