相手(あいて)を愚弄(ぐろう)する言葉(ことば)に「あほ」と「ばか」がありますが、関東(かんとう)と関西(かんさい)では使(つか)い方(かた)が違(ちが)ってきます。関東(かんとう)では「あほ」はきつい言葉(ことば)で、「ばか」は失敗(しっぱい)したときなどに気軽(きがる)に使(つか)うことができます。しかし関西(かんさい)では逆(ぎゃく)で、「あほ」は割(わり)と軽(かる)い意(い)味(み)で、「ばか」がきつい言(い)い方(かた)になるのです。

エスカレーターを使(つか)うときも、関東(かんとう)では左側(ひだりがわ)に立(た)って、右側(みぎがわ)を歩(ある)くのですが、関西(かんさい)では右側(みぎがわ)に立(た)って左側(ひだりがわ)を歩(ある)きます。そのほかにも「うなぎ」をさばくとき、関西(かんさい)はお腹(なか)側(がわ)から切(き)りますが、関東(かんとう)では背中(せなか)から包丁(ほうちょう)を入(い)れていきます。また、関東(かんとう)でお肉(にく)というと豚肉(ぶたにく)を指(さ)しますが、関(かん)西(さい)では牛(ぎゅう)肉(にく)のことを言(い)います。

このように、よく見(み)ると関東(かんとう)と関西(かんさい)では違(ちが)った習慣(しゅうかん)が多(おお)くあるのです。気(き)にしないと目(め)につかないのですが、日本(にほん)に行(い)かれたときは関東(かんとう)と関西(かんさい)の違(ちが)いを探(さが)してみてください。


Baka and Aho

Two words can be used to taunt others, "Aho" and "Baka," but their usage differs between Kanto and Kansai. In the Kanto region (Eastern Japan including Tokyo), the word "idiot" is often used, but "Baka" can be used casually when someone makes a mistake. In the Kansai region (Western Japan including Kyoto and Osaka), however, the usage is reversed: "idiot" is used in a rather light-hearted way, while "Baka" is used more harshly.

When using escalators in Kanto and Kansai, people stand on the left side of the escalator and walk on the right side. However, in Kansai, people stand on the right side and walk on the left. In addition, when cutting eel, people in the Kansai region cut it from the stomach side, while in the Kanto region, the knife is inserted from the back. In the Kanto region, the word "meat" means pork, but in the Kansai region, the word "meat" means beef.

As you can see, many customs differ between Kanto and Kansai. If you don't pay attention to them, you won't notice them. However, when you visit Japan, please try to look for the differences between Kanto and Kansai.
