How to Read Money
Have you ever heard how money is counted in Japan? For example, in English, money is sometimes counted in thousands. For example, $1,000 is called one thousand dollars, and $10,000 is called ten thousand dollars and the next being one million dollars.
So how is this done in Japanese? 1,000 yen is called "sen'en," 10,000 yen is called "ichiman'en," not "jusen'en." 100,000 yen becomes "juman'en," and 1,000,000 yen becomes "hyakuman'en."
In English, we use one thousand units, but in Japanese, we use ten thousand units. So $128,000 is one hundred and twenty-eight thousand dollars, but 128,000 yen is juni-man-hatsusen-yen.
In the U.S., there is a finer unit of currency called the cent which is below $1.00. However, in Japan, one yen is the smallest currency.
