The Gion Festival is a month-long festival held at Yasaka Shrine in Higashiyama Ward, Kyoto City, from July 1 (kippu -iri) to July 31 (Nagoshi ceremony at Ekijin Shrine). The 17th, the “early festival,” and the 24th, the “later festival,” are especially popular with large crowds. The origin of this festival is said to date back to 1100 years ago, when 66 spears were made in the Shinsen-en Garden to pray for the elimination of an epidemic that was spreading in Kyoto, making this a festival with a long history.
