Japanese Etiquette While Eating
Here are some etiquette rules for eating in Japanese culture that may surprise you.
1. How to hold chopsticks: In Japan, we use chopsticks, but you must be careful with how you hold them. Don’t hold the chopsticks up and stick them into the rice. You should only position your chopsticks to make offerings to the deceased.
2. Sharing food: In Japan, sometimes, we’ll share a single dish like hotpot. When sharing food with others, use the chopsticks provided for sharing instead of using your own.
3. Making noise: It’s okay to make noise while eating noodles like soba or udon noodles. However, avoid talking with the food in your mouth.
4. Conversation: Avoid loud conversations when eating out at restaurants.
5. "Itadakimasu" and "Gochisosama": Say "itadakimasu" when you start eating and "gochisosama" when you finish eating.
6. Holding the bowl: When eating rice served in a bowl, lift the bowl.
7. Tipping: No matter how much you like the service, avoid tipping at a restaurant.
