Izakaya (Japanese style pub) Akachochochin
An izakaya is a Japanese-styled place to eat and drink and is different from a Western-style bar or pub. While bars and pubs sell whiskey and cocktails, an izakaya mainly serves Japanese alcoholic beverages like sake and shōchū. Recently, drinks like highballs, which are spirits mixed with carbonated drinks, have become popular in Japan.
An izakaya also serves food. While most bars and pubs offer snack-like foods, an izakaya offers various food items on their menus. Some also have specialty food menus that include yakitori, kushiage, kushiyaki, yakiniku, seafood and sashimi, motsu-nabe, horumon, tempura, etc. You can also enjoy fine sake from other restaurants from various regions of Japan.
Izakayas are often located near train stations and have aka-chochin (red lanterns) hanging outside. An aka-chochin is a restaurant where you can eat and drink. The legal drinking age in Japan is 20 years old, so even minors can eat at an izakaya without drinking alcohol. An izakaya isn’t very expensive, so if you visit Japan, it is a good idea to visit an izakaya and enjoy yourself.
