Case Study: The Smart (Phone) Shopping Experience

The ultimate goal for augmented reality technology is to improve the customer experience and make commerce more convenient and efficient. Amazon Go is a company who is testing some cutting edge technology in this space.

Amazon Go is a shopping experience, a store, where no checkout line is required. You simply walk in, shop as normal, picking up items and placing them in your bag or cart. Then you walk out. It’s that easy. With sensor technology that detects who you are and what items you picked up, the app can add up what you owe and bill you later. All you have to do is install the app on your phone and scan the QR Code to enter the store. Then the overhead cameras along with weight sensors in the shelves will track what you picked.

A QR Code (pictured above) is a two-dimensional barcode first created by the Japanese automotive industry to track parts. You’ve probably seen the square label, which is encrypted with information only readable by your smart device. There’s often a lot of information written into those little labels. The technology is even used to track cattle to see how many times they have come to the feeding stations. The information is stored on a chip.

Who knows…maybe someday we’ll all have a unique tag that replaces the need for ID cards, credit cards, wallets and more!
