Lunch Prices

Like in the U.S., living costs have been rising in Japan. However, the significant difference from the U.S. is that while salaries have increased, the cost of living has not gone up much, and the price of eating out has mostly stayed the same from before the price hike. While it is true that you will not find the same super-cheap lunches as before, there are still meals available for as little as 500 yen ($3.60 in today's exchange rate).

In this newsletter, I will compare prices of foods that are easy to understand.

Price of a Big Mac in Japan 450 yen ($3.21)
Price of a Big Mac in the U.S. $5.17

Comparing the price of a Big Mac by itself, the price in the U.S. is 60% higher than in Japan.
Next, let's compare the price of a tall latte at Starbucks.

Price of a tall latte in Japan 490 yen ($3.50)
Price of a tall latte in the U.S. $3.95

Even for Starbucks, where the prices are close, the U.S. price is higher than the Japanese price.

Of course, these are U.S.-based store prices, but many cheaper lunch options exist in Japan. Here are a few restaurants that you should visit when you are in Japan.

Donburi: Sukiya, Yoshinoya, Matsuya, Nakau
Soba: Yudetaro, Fuji Soba, Sojibo
Udon: Marugame Seimen, Hanamaru Udon, Nakau
Curry: Coco Ichi, Go Go Curry
Family Restaurants: Gusto, Saizeriya
Conveyor-belt sushi: Sushiro, Kurazushi, Hamazushi

These are my recommendations. The standard cost for lunch is between 500 yen and 1,000 yen. Of course, you can have a more luxurious lunch at a reasonable price as well. Even high-class restaurants offer lunch at affordable prices, so it is a good idea to check them out.
