Consumer Mindset

How do you decide to purchase something? Many people want to save money and seek the lowest possible price. No one wants to pay more than others for the same item. This leads to price competition, but is price really the only thing that matters? Items have a fair price, and within that range, what differences determine where you buy from?

  1. Location
Even in the age of the internet, when you need something immediately, price isn't the only consideration. For example, when you need everyday items or groceries in a pinch, you probably buy them at a nearby supermarket or convenience store. The proximity of the store matters. Additionally, impulse purchases can happen during window shopping. Location is an important factor in this scenario too.
  2. Fair Price and Quality
Costco is a good example of this. Even if items at Costco are not particularly cheap, they feel like a safe option. If there are any problems, you can return them. The quality guarantee gives consumers peace of mind. A fair price isn't about being inexpensive but having a good balance between quality and price.
  3. Convenience
Amazon is a prime example here. You can order from anywhere, the prices are reasonable, and returns are easy. This convenience is highly attractive to consumers. Amazon's fast delivery service and wide product range are also reasons for its popularity.
  4. Brand Power
This applies to department stores and brand-name items. Consider wristwatches, for example. In the U.S., affordable brands like TIMEX offer sufficient functionality. However, luxury brand watches sell because of brand power. Brands provide not only a guarantee of quality but also status, reliability, and design.
  5. Reputation
Items sell better if many people are talking about them. This is why online marketing is so popular. Not just traditional ads, but influencers using a product can boost its appeal. Products with high ratings on review sites and social media gain consumer trust and increase demand.
The criteria for making a purchase extends beyond just price. They include location, quality, convenience, brand power, and reputation. Consumers consider these factors comprehensively to make the best choice for them. Understanding these perspectives can also be very powerful as a seller strategizing their marketing tactics.
