原子力発電所から出る使用済燃料から、燃料としてまだ使えるウランとプルトニウムを回収した後に残る高レベル放射性廃棄物を、最終的に地下深い地層中に処分することは、現­在の国の基本方針となっています。
核燃料の再処理が前提にあり、その後の高レベル放射性廃棄物の地層処分技術に関する研究開発として建設されたのが、幌延深地層研究センターです。
地層科学研究や地層処分研究開発を行うことにより、地層処分の技術的な信頼性を、実際の深地層での試験研究等を通じて確認することを目的としています。
その奥深くに潜入してみた。
