How Our Desires Influence What We Believe

The concept that people shape their beliefs on what they want to hear and believe originated from traditional print media, like books, magazines, and newspapers. The addition of broadcast media, such as radio and television, and the subsequent proliferation of the Internet, websites, social media platforms, and video distribution have further influenced this concept. While traditional media formats have featured people's opinions, the rise of the internet has democratized information dissemination, making it easier for people to share their perspectives.

When someone shares information on the internet and attracts a considerable following, that person transforms from a mere individual to an "influencer" capable of shaping many others' opinions. The greater the number of followers, the more impactful the information becomes. However, it's risky if inaccurate information spreads without adequate verification.

Even though there are plenty of fact-checking methods, information doesn't always go through thorough verification. So, it may lead to a popular influencer conveying misinformation and users accepting it as true. Similarly, people may perceive ads as factual by repetition, even if it's untrue.

Even though they're supposed to be reporting facts, traditional media outlets like newspapers, television, and radio will often prioritize information that appeals to their audience for the sake of viewer ratings. Despite the enormous amount of information out there because of the internet, comprehensive fact-checking remains insufficient. Therefore, people should critically evaluate information from all media sources, including newspapers and television, and make informed judgments.
