Then and Now: The Importance of Newsletters and Internet Use for Businesses

I used to write a newsletter titled Weather Report twice a week for 10 years. In one edition, I discussed the prevalence of salarymen in Japan reading manga or magazines on the train. The response from readers was a mix of surprise and curiosity, with many asking, “What’s so strange about that?”

At the time, I wasn’t accustomed to reading manga, so I found it intriguing and somewhat puzzling that adults would spend their commute engrossed in comics. It wasn’t meant as criticism; people are free to use their time as they wish. However, I couldn’t help but feel a little out of step with the idea of reading manga in such a public setting.

Fast forward to today, the scene on public transportation has changed dramatically. Hardly anyone is reading manga or magazines anymore. Instead, most people are glued to their smartphones. Even in social settings, such as dining with friends or colleagues, I often see people focused on their devices. It makes me wonder: What are they looking at? Are they reading digital manga, checking emails, browsing social media, or watching YouTube videos?

Nowadays, much of our information and entertainment doesn’t come from face-to-face conversations but from online content and streaming services. Phrases like “I saw this video on YouTube” or “I read this online” often spark discussions.

This shift highlights the profound change in how we gather information and communicate. For businesses, this evolution underscores the critical role of newsletters and effective internet use.

Information spreads instantaneously, offering countless opportunities to connect with audiences. Newsletters remain a powerful tool for businesses to convey their messages amid the overwhelming flow of information. By speaking directly to customers and partners, businesses can build trust and foster a sense of connection with their brand. Complementing newsletters with social media posts and websites extends their reach and creates more meaningful touchpoints.

As times change and the ways people consume information evolve, businesses must adapt. The ability to leverage newsletters and the internet effectively can significantly influence a company’s success. Embracing change and adopting new tools and strategies is essential for thriving in the modern business landscape.
