Carbon Foot Print of Servers

thread
Carbon Foot Print of Servers
Each server uses approximately 0.5kWh (kilo Watts per Hour). Each kWh generates 1.297 lbs of CO2 according to http://www.carbonfund.org/site/pages/carbon_calculators/category/Assumptions”>http://www.carbonfund.org.

PSPINC hosts Web and Email using about 400 servers for about 37,000 companies both in the USA and Japan. We are emitting about 260lbs of CO2 every hour. If you compare that to if each 37,000 companies having their own servers, it would have been almost 48,000lbs every hour. That is more than 420,000 tons of CO2 per year. That is about 900,000 trees per year compared to 9,600 trees.

PSPINC is dedicated to using clean energy for its power source and striving very hard to reduce its carbon footprint by creating a software that require less hardware.

NOTE: Easiest ways to calculate is ... Every year a server require about 24 trees to recover its carbon foot print. WOW, that is a lot.

HQ Datacenter Update

thread
HQ Datacenter Update
Yesterday, the wall of the fueling station for generators came up. By the end of this week or early next week, VECA will come and install the electronic control panels. Once they are done, we should put fuel in generators and start testing. Just generators and installation alone costed over $80,000.

What is a Beta Release?

"Beta" is a nickname for software which has passed the alpha testing stage of development and has been released to users for software testing before its official release. It is the prototype of the software that is released to the public.

Beta testing allows the software to undergo usability testing with users who provide feedback, so that any malfunctions these users find in the software can be reported to the developers and fixed. Beta software can be unstable and could cause crashes or data loss.

Aperture 3 is still having problems...

thread
Aperture 3 is still having prob...
Apple Wait

I reported the problems with Aperture 3 few weeks ago. Last friday there was an online upgrade. I read that it fixed the problems, so I downloaded and started to import 45,000 photos from iPhoto last Friday. I came back on Sunday (today) and found the import was complete.

Last time, import was never completed. So, I started to use the program. I am sorry to say but the program was so slow, or I should say the computer became so slow it was not useable. I checked Aperture library and found it was close to 160GB. iPhoto library is less than 45GB.

It is just not ready yet. I have decided to delete the program from my iMac. What a waste of time and money this is. My computer is still trying to delete the 160GB files from the trash.

There seems to be still a lot of problems with this program. I hope this is not what Apple product qualities are going to be in the future.

I broke my cellular phone AGAIN!

thread
I broke my cellular phone AGA...
Okay ... I broke my cellular phone again. This time, I left it in the golf bag. When the bag fell, the LCD display was broken. I seem to break my phone every few months. I am the only one in my company that carries the insurance for my cellular phone. Good this I have this insurance.

I need a phone that is

- water proof

- shock resistant

- Mac compatible

- Able to read QR Code

Do you know any phone like that?

The term "QR Code" is a registered trademark of DENSO WAVE INCORPORATED.

Mobile Me

thread
Mobile Me
To keep both of my Macintosh synchronized, I started using Mobile My by Apple. It is a basically a email program with

- IMAP Email
- Sync. and keep my contacts on the net
- Sync. and keep my calendar on the net
- 10GB of private and public storage

All of above is $99 per year. With $99 you can register a domain, create and maintain 10 email accounts, get 10GB of Web space. This is at PSPINC.

$99 is very expensive for the things it is offering.

Unsupported Browser

thread
Unsupported Browser
I have been having little problem with Gmail. It does not open first time saying the browser I am using is not compatible. I usually use Safari as my browser.

So to test the system, I downloaded Chrome browser. Chrome is by Google. I figured Chrome should be compatible with Gmail.

This is what I got. What is going on?
