The Market Decides What Will Sell
In business, oftentimes, things don't sell as expected or, conversely, unexpected things sell. This is because there’s a difference between how a manager sees the market and the reality of the market. But this isn’t just true for business managers. Even after doing market research, it’s not uncommon for the market to be out of sync with actual market trends. So how do you know what will sell when you make a product, and how do you know what the market wants? Here are some ways that’ll help you figure it out:
Consumer Feedback
It’s impossible to talk directly to new customers. However, it is possible to talk to existing customers. It goes without saying that customer feedback is an important source of information. Just because we do market research, it doesn’t necessarily mean we’ll hear the real story there. It’s important to talk with customers in as informal a setting as possible.
Sales Opinions
Salespeople are the ones who actually talk directly with customers. They’re usually involved in a variety of conversations with customers. I think it is safe to assume that the information that comes into their ears can be trusted since they get it directly from the customer.
Free Versions
Instead of a full-scale, paid digital product or service, release a free version that anyone can sign up for and see how it goes. If the response is positive, release a paid professional version to introduce it to a larger number of consumers.

When we began publishing US software in Japan, our Japanese distributors did not want to publicize the existence of PSPINC. As a result, they prohibited us from printing our company name on the Japanese version of the software package.

I just came back from Japan last Staurday but I already booked my next Japan trip.
It will be from October 22 (Sunday) to Novermber 5 (Sunday).
This will be my 5th Japan travel since Japan has opened its door, after the Covid lockdown, last October. I don't usially travel this much to Japan but I am trying everything I can to reestabish and create new relationships with Japanese vendors and parners. I believe noting really moves forward without face-to-face meetings.

Individual Responsibility
When I first started working a long time ago, someone told me today's youth have gotten weaker. They used to work hard in a much harsher working environment. Such was the case with me back then. I worked from morning until midnight, and we all went out drinking after work. There were times when we missed the last train and we stayed at the office, or we all stayed at a hotel. I’m not trying to say they were right, but it was just the norm back then. There was no such thing as "working overtime”. And I didn't even think about separating my work life from my personal life. But if I didn't, I wouldn't have been part of the team. That’s why there weren’t any promotions, and I think it’s also why creating female managers was hard.
But the company didn’t dictate these decisions. They were my own. Everything was the world of the company and I was working within it. And that’s how it was supposed to be. I didn't even feel like I was working overtime.
However, these days, thinking that way is wrong, and the company and employees are two separate things. I believe this is an American way of thinking that has spread to Japan and the rest of the world. This has since led to the idea that a company is a company, and an individual is an individual, and politics has the role of regulating the company and protecting its employees.
We live in a time where society’s, companies’, and individuals’ roles are becoming increasingly clear, but we can’t forget that workers keep society and companies running. Society uses regulation to control the company, and the company uses people according to that regulation. Is this really the way to achieve teamwork? I sometimes wonder, but perhaps it is outdated to feel that way.
