Important Google Analytics data you can use to optimize your website

thread
Important Google Analytics data...
We’ve all heard the quote “knowledge is power”. This has never range more true than it does these days. Analytical data is being monitored for all facets of day-to-day life, including the Internet. As a website owner, you can take advantage of this data as well with the power of Google Analytics.

Below you will find a few useful areas of the Google Analytics admin panel that can help you optimize your website’s performance in the eyes of your visitors.

Audience > Overview

From here you can get some useful general metrics on traffic to your website. You can check Users, New Users, Sessions, Number of Sessions per User, Pageviews, and Pages / Session. Along with that, you can see new vs returning visitors to gauge how effective your website is at getting people to come back. This paired with a useful line graph representing Users over the evaluation period makes this both visual and data-rich.

Audience > Technology > Browser & OS

Historically browsers haven’t always played nice with one another. What I mean by that is, just because your website looks beautiful on Google Chrome does NOT mean it will look that same way on say, Internet Explorer. Using this data will allow you to determine what browsers are most used by your audience. You can then work with your development team to ensure the experience is perfect across specific devices. At PSPINC we always test our web development projects on all modern and supported web browsers.

Audience > Mobile > Overview

From this view, you can gauge how many of your users are visiting via desktop, mobile, and tablet. This will help you determine how your website visitors view your website to ensure it is optimized for those experiences. If you need help ensuring you are delivering a seamless experience regardless of the device your visitors use, let us know - we can help.

Acquisition > Overview

So far we have talked about getting data out of Users once they visit your website. This page helps you determine where your traffic is coming from. Which are extremely useful metrics when it comes time for you to determine a marketing plan. If you see a lot of traffic from Social, well it may be time to investigate running a Facebook ad campaign. Getting a lot of organic search traffic? Amp it up by running some Google Ads! With this page, you get higher-level details on whether your traffic is Direct, Referral (linked from another website), Organic Search, or Social sources.

Acquisition > All Traffic > Source/Medium

This report will further break down the sources and by default arrange them in the order of most Users provided. Here you will see a report on direct traffic, organic search, and each referral source. And for each of those, you will know the number of Users, New Users, Sessions, Bounce Rate, etc. Knowing how users find your site and the exact numbers behind that is powerful information that cannot be overlooked.

Acquisition > Social > Overview

This page will break down your social (media) value. If you are posting to multiple social media platforms consistently, this information can provide information on which of those are most helpful in getting you referral traffic. Each website audience is unique, and just because a specific platform is popular globally, doesn’t mean it is helping your website bring in new business. With information like this, you can determine which are worth investing more time in, and which you could be doing more to increase your website audience.

We have just scratched the surface. Google Analytics is a data-rich platform. Whether or not you use this data daily or just occasionally, you should be tracking it. If you don’t have Google Analytics installed on your website and need some help, please let us know. We can help get you up and running in no time.

SEM for your business website

thread
SEM for your business website
You have heard us talk a lot about SEO (search engine optimization). However, there is another acronym you may have heard called SEM.

What is SEM?

SEM stands for “Search Engine Marketing”.

Where SEO is focused 100% on optimizing your website to rank high on SERPs (search engine result pages), SEM is about generating traffic and brand visibility through organic and PPC (pay per click) campaigns.

You can think of SEM as the umbrella that SEO and PPC campaigns fall under.

Benefits of an SEM mindset

While SEO should never be neglected, it is a piece of the SEM puzzle. The PPC element will help the speed at which your site can rank higher on search results.

Search engines like Google place PPC ads above organic search results. Meaning you can pay to have your ad potentially seen above highly ranked organic results. A huge benefit for new websites, looking to dramatically increase their brand awareness.

Focusing solely on SEO is a great place to start when you have a limited (or non-existent) advertising budget. You won’t necessarily see a dramatic return on investment quickly, as SEO takes months and sometimes years based on competition in the space.

However, if you have a consistent advertising budget, the ability to launch landing pages, and can manage a Google ads account - PPC is a great way to bring exposure to your amazing products and services.

If you are considering leveling up your SEO to SEM and are looking for assistance in getting started please let us know, we would love to speak with you about your goals and how we can help!

What is a Virtual Private Server?

thread
What is a Virtual Private Serv...

A virtual private server (referred to as a VPS) is the location where data and web files are stored that run a website. If we are using a housing comparison, consider your domain your address, your web files your house, and the VPS is the piece of land you are building on.

Shared Hosting vs Virtual Private Server Hosting

At PSPINC we talk a lot about shared hosting, probably because we have been offering some of the most reliable shared web hosting in the industry for 25 years.

Shared hosting is probably the most common form of web hosting. Essentially it is a server where resources are shared with other users hosted on the same server. Things like RAM, CPU, and hard drive space are allocated to those users on that server.

When discussing a VPS, your web files are hosted on the same physical hardware as other users. However, what differs is that you are separated to your own ‘virtual space’ on that server. It means that you can have your own dedicated storage space, CPU, specific operating system, RAM, and custom bandwidth limits.

Going back to the housing analogy - shared hosting is like an apartment or condo, where you have your own unit (website) but you occupy the sam piece of land. A VPS is like having a house on your own property.

We didn’t really touch on dedicated hosting, which is much like a VPS but it means you have your own hardware. This is a more costly approach than using a VPS, but there are definitely specific situations where this could be necessary. We can help with that too, contact us for a quote.

VPS and Shared Hosting Scale

2 Reasons to Consider a Virtual Private Server

For the average website, a shared hosting space is more than enough in terms of specs and fit most customer’s budgets. However, there are times when using a virtual private server is recommended.

  1. Enhanced Security & Monitoring: If you need to generate and create backups on a specific schedule, need enhanced security, or want to monitor the performance of your system more closely.

  2. Performance Concerns: A blessing and a curse, if your website is extremely popular and sees high levels of traffic or experiences spikes in traffic at various times, you could experience speed issues. Speed issues not only hurts the experience of your customers, but also could hurt your SEO (search engine optimization). A VPS allows you have custom specs geared towards your specific business needs.

Do you need VPS Hosting?

If you are convinced that your website needs a VPS custom tailored to your business needs, let us know. We have the a team that will do the heavy lifting to get your VPS online quickly and conveniently. In addition, we have a team monitoring our VPS hosted customers 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year.

XML Sitemaps For Your Website

thread
XML Sitemaps For Your Website
You may ask - what are XML sitemaps? Simply put, it is a specific file that lives “behind the scenes” of your website. This file contains a list of important web pages that help make it easy for Google to find and crawl them. Ensuring your pages are visible by search engines is an important factor to take into consideration with your website’s SEO.

What does an XML sitemap look like?

XML stands for “Extensible Markup Language”, which is another coding language similar to HTML. Below you will see an example of a very simple XML sitemap courtesy of Google Search Central’s build sitemap page.
Sample XML Code

What pages should be included in your XML sitemap?

Simply put, any web page you want users to find in search results should be included in your XML sitemap. Start with your most relevant pages and work down the chain. It’s worth mentioning if you don’t search engines to crawl a specific page, leaving it out of the sitemap isn’t enough. You need to include a “no index” tag on any page you wish to keep from being indexed.
Guy sitting at a computer

How to add an XML sitemap to your website

Does the above code look a bit intimidating? Fear not! There are many ways to generate a sitemap without writing a single line of code.

WordPress Plugins: There are many plugins that serve the purpose of generating an XML sitemap for you. One of the most popular is the Yoast SEO plugin. Sitemap generation is just one of many useful tools for optimizing your website for SEO.

Sitemap Generators: If you search online there are tools built to specifically crawl and automatically generate a sitemap for you. This is useful if you are wanting to go with a DIY approach and your site wasn’t build with a CMS tool. The only downside to this method is if you want to be precise on page priority and defining the last modified date, you will need to manually edit the file.

From Scratch: Depending on the size of your site, you may just want to code it by hand. Usually ideal for smaller sites that want to define a specific priority. The larger the site, and those with frequent updates, the more time-consuming this becomes. If you hired a Web Developer to build your website they should be able to take care of this for you.

Have It Done Automatically: You may say, "yah sign me up for this method" and we would be happy to! We have our own CMS system developed in-house and exclusively for our Dreamersi web hosting customers called WebdeXpress. With WebdeXpress, when you publish your site, the sitemap is automatically generated/updated for you, it’s not even something you have to think about.

If you have additional questions or want some help with your website’s SEO, please contact us online or by phone at 1-800-232-3989! We would love to talk with you about your website needs!

Benefits of Business Blogging

thread
Benefits of Business Blogging
A blog is defined by Wikipedia as a discussion or informational website published on the World Wide Web consisting of discrete, often informal diary-style text entries.

So we know what a blog is, but now the question is - why should you as a business owner blog? There is more than one reason that your business should have a blog. So let's talk about the benefits of business blogging (I love alliteration)!

Make a personal connection with your customers

We are all looking for that edge that sets us apart from our competitors. One thing that we absolutely value at PSPINC is the personal customer support we offer. If you talk with one of our support technicians you will learn their name and be able to contact them easily again in the future.

Blogging is another way to establish that connection. It allows the author to speak in an informal manner to their customers and create a relationship of sorts. If a customer follows your blog, they may be more likely to call and request the blogger by name. Think of it as a way of laying the foundation for future lead generation and sales.

Good for search engine optimization

We’ve talked a lot about search engine optimization in the past because it is so important to get your website seen. Blogging has the potential to be a big part of that for a number of reasons.
    1. Provides fresh content on your website which tells search engines that your site is actively being updated. This encourages search engines to crawl your website more frequently.

    1. Blogging allows you to use keywords that your customers are likely to search to find your website. The more those keywords are organically found on your website through blog content, the more likely it is that a search engine will serve your site to your customers.

  1. Allows you to reach a specific audience with each post. At PSPINC we offer numerous different types of services, from web design to web and mobile application development to technical support. Often each service caters to different types of customers. The keywords one type of customer uses in search engines to find you may be different from another. Blogging allows you to fill the gaps and cast the widest net possible.

An avenue for showcasing your company culture and news

When a customer is deciding whether or not to do business with you, or a potential job candidate is trying to determine if your company is the right fit, the company blog lets them know what you are all about. It’s an invaluable tool to share company culture, latest news, as well as brag a bit about your many accomplishments!

Those are just a few of the many benefits of business blogging. There are many blogging platforms out there that make it really easy to get started. We even have our own platform called Bloguru. Bloguru is totally ad-free, can be embedded on your website, and presents your content to Bloguru’s loyal and established user base to get extra eyes on your content. In fact, the blog you are reading right now was published to Bloguru. Did we mention it is totally free to sign up?

If you have any questions on blogging or need help getting started, please contact us by phone at 1-800-232-3989, by email at contact@pspinc.com, or by our online contact form.

Building Backlinks For Your WordPress Site

thread
Building Backlinks For Your W...

What are backlinks? Backlinks are links from one website to another. Having high-quality backlinks from reputable websites will increase your search rankings. Search engines use backlinks to gauge a website’s authority. The more quality backlinks you have, the more likely you will show up on the first page of search results.

How to get backlinks?

Building quality backlinks takes time and effort. Quality matters here, as backlinks from spammy websites will actually hurt your search rankings. Here are 6 simple ways for you to start building quality backlinks for your WordPress website.

#1. Create Actionable Content

An informative, well-written blog post is a great way to attract others to link back to your website. Content such as self-help articles, instructional guides, and tips & tricks are some good content ideas here. You want to create valuable content that others will want to link to from within their own websites.

React to social media

#2. Social Media Platforms

Make sure to link your website on your social media profiles. Engage in conversations and topics relevant to your website. In doing so, encourage others to share the content on your WordPress site.

#3. Write Guest Posts

Instead of creating content on your website, you can write articles for someone else. Create articles and blog posts on high traffic, reputable websites. Having a simple link to your WordPress website from your profile will suffice.

#4. Exchange Partner Logos

If you are partnered with reputable companies, ask them to create a partner page where you could exchange partner logos. You will share their logo and link to their website, they will do the same for you.

Review products

#5. Review Products

Have you ever been asked to write a product review? Accept the request next time, and ask them to provide a link to your WordPress site in exchange for your reviews.

#6. Interview or Get Interviewed

When someone is releasing a product or wants to promote an idea, they would love to be interviewed. You help them get their word out and promote them. When you send them the link to the interview, they will undoubtedly post the link on their website or social media platforms.

On the other hand, are you an expert at something? If so, offer to give an interview in exchange for a shoutout for your WordPress website.

In Summary

Backlinks are an important part of SEO. It lends you authority and gives you better visibility on the search engines. As you create quality content, you will naturally attract backlinks from others. Building high-quality backlinks is key to running a successful website.

Tips for Optimizing your Website

thread
Tips for Optimizing your Website

Many tools make it easy to build a website yourself these days (we offer a super easy-to-use web builder ourselves). However, building your website is only part of the battle. Once you build your website you want to make sure it is optimized for performance and SEO. Whether you build your website yourself or hire a professional to do it for you - below are some useful tips for you to be aware of to make sure your website is well-optimized.

permalink

Don’t use extremely large images

This includes both the size of the file and the dimensions of the image being used. It is important for users that when they visit a page on your website, that it loads quickly. The more your customers have to wait for your page to load, the more incentive they have to leave your site and go elsewhere. It’s for this reason that Google and other search engines consider this when it comes to determining your rank. Want to be ranked higher? Load faster!

What you can do to decrease the size of your images:

  • Make sure your images are in the right dimensions. There is no need to load a 4000-pixel wide image on your website. Decreasing the dimensions will also decrease your file size.
  • Use the save for web feature in Photoshop to decrease the size of your images.

For more details on this, watch a video we made about optimizing your images for the web using Adobe Photoshop.

permalink

Use real text, don’t embed it within your images

When you include site content within your images rather than as actual text you create issues both with the page speed and search engine optimization. The more images that the web browser needs to load, the longer it will take to load. Whereas plain text loads much quicker.

Search engines also rely on real text to index your site and serve it to users who search for particular words or phrases. Web crawlers cannot read the content within images, even if it is extremely valuable information. You are doing yourself a huge disservice by not allowing search engines to know about this content and provide it to their users.

In addition to these points, embedding images within text create accessibility issues for visually impaired individuals who rely on screen readers to dictate content to them.

permalink

Make sure your site is mobile-friendly

Everyone has slightly different statistics to back this up, but one thing that is universally agreed upon is the growth of web viewing through mobile devices. If your website is not mobile-friendly, those users who are viewing it on their smartphone are going to bounce almost immediately - potentially costing you a customer.

Your website should be coded to be responsive so it will scale to fit whatever type of device your visitors are viewing it on. We’ve talked about responsive design before, so be sure to read that blog post for more valuable information.

What you can do to make sure your website is mobile-friendly:

  • Test it out for yourself, open your website on a mobile device. If it is really hard to read and everything looks small, chances are your website is not mobile-friendly. You could be due for a redesign. If you don’t know where to start, reach out to use or a free quote!
  • If you are building a website yourself, make sure your web builder offers responsive themes. Our web builder, WebdeXpress, offers a ton of mobile-friendly themes.
  • If you have hired a Web Developer and the website they are building for you isn’t readable on a smartphone, consider that a huge red flag. Every website we build at PSPINC is responsive and meant for devices of all types.

These are just a few of the things we take into consideration when we build websites for customers. There are so many other things we do to ensure the websites we provide are well optimized, extremely visible, and perform to the best of their ability.

If you are looking for a free quote, or have a question for us please contact us on social media, by phone at 1-800-232-3889, or email at contact@pspinc.com. We would be happy to help make sure your website is a valuable tool for your business!

How To Customize WordPress Permalinks

thread
How To Customize WordPress...

Permalinks are the URLs to your pages and posts on your WordPress website. These are permanent links search engines and web visitors see when they go to your site. For these reasons, it’s important to customize your WordPress permalinks for better SEO and visibility.

WordPress Permalinks Default Settings

By default, WordPress sets your permalinks to “Plain”. You can find the permalinks settings under Settings > Permalinks. This sets your pages and posts URLs with a number, such as "http://wordpress.dreamersi.net/?p=123"

permalink

This is not very user-friendly, because the address does not tell the users what the page is about. Search engines will also associate your pages with a number, which is not good for SEO. The URLs to your pages and posts should contain relevant keywords that reflect your content.

Changing WordPress Permalinks

Changing permalinks will affect existing pages and posts you have already created. If you have existing pages with good search engine performance, you should create 301 redirects to preserve your traffic. Install 301 Redirects – Easy Redirect Manager plugin to setup 301 redirects to prevent a loss of search ranking on your existing pages.

Ideal Settings for WordPress Permalinks

Under Settings > Permalinks, change your permalinks settings from “Plain” to “Post name”. Then click “Save Changes”. This will change the URL addresses of your pages to be more search engine friendly. For an example, compare "http://wordpress.dreamersi.net/?p=123" to "http://wordpress.dreamersi.net/customize-wordpress-permalinks/", the latter using post name tells the users what the content is about from just the URL address. This will also help Google index your page as the URL contains relevant keywords.

Customizing Permalinks

You can customize your permalinks further under “Custom Structure”. A popular custom structure uses /%category%/%postname%/, this would include the category name in the URL address. For an example, if you were to create a how to customize wordpress permalinks blog under the category “Better SEO”, the URL would come out as:

You see how this might improve page rankings, as the URL includes several relevant keywords that users might search for on Google.

Why Not Day and Month

Putting a date on your content URL tends to make your content seem outdated very quickly. When people are searching for answers, they are less likely to click on something dated 5 years ago. People want to know the content they click on is up-to-date and relevant.

However, there are times when putting a date in the URL makes sense. If you are a magazine publication, putting dates in the URLs will allow your users to search for specific content they want to read. High traffic news websites will also benefit from having proper date structure in their addresses.

In Summary

WordPress default permalink setting is not user-friendly, and it’s bad for SEO. Having the proper permalink setting configured from the start is ideal. Utilize a 301 redirect plugin if you have existing content and you want to preserve their traffic when making permalink updates.
