We’ve all heard the quote “knowledge is power”. This has never range more true than it does these days. Analytical data is being monitored for all facets of day-to-day life, including the Internet. As a website owner, you can take advantage of this data as well with the power of Google Analytics.

Below you will find a few useful areas of the Google Analytics admin panel that can help you optimize your website’s performance in the eyes of your visitors.

Audience > Overview

From here you can get some useful general metrics on traffic to your website. You can check Users, New Users, Sessions, Number of Sessions per User, Pageviews, and Pages / Session. Along with that, you can see new vs returning visitors to gauge how effective your website is at getting people to come back. This paired with a useful line graph representing Users over the evaluation period makes this both visual and data-rich.

Audience > Technology > Browser & OS

Historically browsers haven’t always played nice with one another. What I mean by that is, just because your website looks beautiful on Google Chrome does NOT mean it will look that same way on say, Internet Explorer. Using this data will allow you to determine what browsers are most used by your audience. You can then work with your development team to ensure the experience is perfect across specific devices. Audience > Mobile > Overview

From this view, you can gauge how many of your users are visiting via desktop, mobile, and tablet. So far we have talked about getting data out of Users once they visit your website. This page helps you determine where your traffic is coming from. If you see a lot of traffic from Social, well it may be time to investigate running a Facebook ad campaign. Getting a lot of organic search traffic? Amp it up by running some Google Ads! With this page, you get higher-level details on whether your traffic is Direct, Referral (linked from another website), Organic Search, or Social sources.

This report will further break down the sources and by default arrange them in the order of most Users provided. Here you will see a report on direct traffic, organic search, and each referral source. This page will break down your social (media) value. A virtual private server (referred to as a VPS) is the location where data and web files are stored that run a website. If we are using a housing comparison, consider your domain your address, your web files your house, and the VPS is the piece of land you are building on.

Shared Hosting vs Virtual Private Server Hosting

At PSPINC we talk a lot about shared hosting, probably because we have been offering some of the most reliable shared web hosting in the industry for 25 years.

Shared hosting is probably the most common form of web hosting. Essentially it is a server where resources are shared with other users hosted on the same server. Things like RAM, CPU, and hard drive space are allocated to those users on that server.

When discussing a VPS, your web files are hosted on the same physical hardware as other users. However, what differs is that you are separated to your own ‘virtual space’ on that server. It means that you can have your own dedicated storage space, CPU, specific operating system, RAM, and custom bandwidth limits.

Going back to the housing analogy - shared hosting is like an apartment or condo, where you have your own unit (website) but you occupy the sam piece of land. A VPS is like having a house on your own property.

XML Sitemaps For Your Website

You may ask - what are XML sitemaps? Simply put, it is a specific file that lives “behind the scenes” of your website. This file contains a list of important web pages that help make it easy for Google to find and crawl them. Ensuring your pages are visible by search engines is an important factor to take into consideration with your website’s SEO.

What does an XML sitemap look like?

XML stands for “Extensible Markup Language”, which is another coding language similar to HTML. Below you will see an example of a very simple XML sitemap courtesy of Google Search Central’s build sitemap page.

What pages should be included in your XML sitemap?

Simply put, any web page you want users to find in search results should be included in your XML sitemap. Start with your most relevant pages and work down the chain. It’s worth mentioning if you don’t search engines to crawl a specific page, leaving it out of the sitemap isn’t enough. You need to include a “no index” tag on any page you wish to keep from being indexed.

How to add an XML sitemap to your website

Does the above code look a bit intimidating? Fear not! There are many ways to generate a sitemap without writing a single line of code.

WordPress Plugins: There are many plugins that serve the purpose of generating an XML sitemap for you. One of the most popular is the Yoast SEO plugin. Sitemap generation is just one of many useful tools for optimizing your website for SEO.

Sitemap Generators: If you search online there are tools built to specifically crawl and automatically generate a sitemap for you. This is useful if you are wanting to go with a DIY approach and your site wasn’t build with a CMS tool. The only downside to this method is if you want to be precise on page priority and defining the last modified date, you will need to manually edit the file.

From Scratch: Depending on the size of your site, you may just want to code it by hand. Usually ideal for smaller sites that want to define a specific priority. The larger the site, and those with frequent updates, the more time-consuming this becomes. If you hired a Web Developer to build your website they should be able to take care of this for you.

Once you build your website you want to make sure it is optimized for performance and SEO. Whether you build your website yourself or hire a professional to do it for you - below are some useful tips for you to be aware of to make sure your website is well-optimized.

Don’t use extremely large images

This includes both the size of the file and the dimensions of the image being used. It is important for users that when they visit a page on your website, that it loads quickly. The more your customers have to wait for your page to load, the more incentive they have to leave your site and go elsewhere. It’s for this reason that Google and other search engines consider this when it comes to determining your rank. Want to be ranked higher? Load faster!

What you can do to decrease the size of your images:

Make sure your images are in the right dimensions. There is no need to load a 4000-pixel wide image on your website. Decreasing the dimensions will also decrease your file size.
Use the save for web feature in Photoshop to decrease the size of your images.

Use real text, don’t embed it within your images

When you include site content within your images rather than as actual text you create issues both with the page speed and search engine optimization. The more images that the web browser needs to load, the longer it will take to load. Whereas plain text loads much quicker.

Search engines also rely on real text to index your site and serve it to users who search for particular words or phrases. Web crawlers cannot read the content within images, even if it is extremely valuable information. You are doing yourself a huge disservice by not allowing search engines to know about this content and provide it to their users.

In addition to these points, embedding images within text create accessibility issues for visually impaired individuals who rely on screen readers to dictate content to them.

Make sure your site is mobile-friendly

Everyone has slightly different statistics to back this up, but one thing that is universally agreed upon is the growth of web viewing through mobile devices. If your website is not mobile-friendly, those users who are viewing it on their smartphone are going to bounce almost immediately - potentially costing you a customer.

How To Customize WordPress Permalinks

Permalinks are the URLs to your pages and posts on your WordPress website. These are permanent links search engines and web visitors see when they go to your site. For these reasons, it’s important to customize your WordPress permalinks for better SEO and visibility.

WordPress Permalinks Default Settings

By default, WordPress sets your permalinks to “Plain”. You can find the permalinks settings under Settings > Permalinks. This sets your pages and posts URLs with a number, such as "http://wordpress.dreamersi.net/?p=123"

This is not very user-friendly, because the address does not tell the users what the page is about. Search engines will also associate your pages with a number, which is not good for SEO. The URLs to your pages and posts should contain relevant keywords that reflect your content.

Changing WordPress Permalinks

Changing permalinks will affect existing pages and posts you have already created. If you have existing pages with good search engine performance, you should create 301 redirects to preserve your traffic. Install 301 Redirects – Easy Redirect Manager plugin to setup 301 redirects to prevent a loss of search ranking on your existing pages.

Ideal Settings for WordPress Permalinks

Under Settings > Permalinks, change your permalinks settings from “Plain” to “Post name”. Then click “Save Changes”. This will change the URL addresses of your pages to be more search engine friendly. For an example, compare "http://wordpress.dreamersi.net/?p=123" to "http://wordpress.dreamersi.net/customize-wordpress-permalinks/", the latter using post name tells the users what the content is about from just the URL address. This will also help Google index your page as the URL contains relevant keywords.

Customizing Permalinks

You can customize your permalinks further under “Custom Structure”. A popular custom structure uses /%category%/%postname%/, this would include the category name in the URL address. For an example, if you were to create a how to customize wordpress permalinks blog under the category “Better SEO”, the URL would come out as:
