Internet Speed

thread

I tested Internet speed one with no VPN and I know that with VPN. As you can see the connection withot VPN is few times faster than with VPN. Although they are both respectable speed but for internet intensive tasks, I will disconnet VPN.

Something about Password

thread
Something about Password
Characters That Can Be Typed on a Keyboard and Password Complexity

Below is a list of characters that can be typed using a standard keyboard:

1234567890-=
!@#$%^&*()_+
qwertyuiop[]\
QWERTYUIOP{}|
asdfghjkl;'
ASDFGHJKL:"
zxcvbnm,./
ZXCVBNM<>?
While some characters, such as spaces, may not be allowed in passwords, the 92 characters listed above are typically used as the basis for password combinations.

Examples of Password Combinations
The number of possible password combinations increases exponentially with the length of the password. For example:

Up to 8-character passwords
The total number of possible combinations is 5,188,586,409,742,380.
If a computer capable of testing 10,000 combinations per second were to attempt all possible combinations, it would take:

16,452 years, 328 days, 8 hours, 16 minutes, and 14 seconds

Up to 12-character passwords
Testing all combinations at the same speed (10,000 attempts per second) would require:

1,178,674,142,659,000,000 years, 196 days, 4 hours, 30 minutes, and 56 seconds

Conclusion
This illustrates just how challenging it is to crack a password generated with random characters. The longer the password, the more secure it becomes due to the exponential increase in combinations. To protect sensitive data, it’s crucial to create strong, random, and lengthy passwords.

Ken Uchikura Newsletter Vol. 316 The Quality of "Made in Japan"

thread
Ken Uchikura Newsletter Vol. ...

The Quality of "Made in Japan"

What comes to mind when you hear the phrase "Made in Japan"? Many people might associate it with "high quality," "durability," or "craftsmanship." However, this positive perception is a relatively recent development. In the past, "Made in Japan" carried a very different reputation.

Decades ago, Japanese products were often labeled as "cheap imitations" or "low-cost goods." Especially during the post-war reconstruction era, Japanese products were perceived as affordable but of low quality—similar to how some may view "Made in China" today.

For instance, Japanese cars faced significant challenges in the American market at the time, often criticized for overheating and lack of durability. One of the reasons was the difference in infrastructure. In Japan, highways were not well-developed, so vehicles were not designed for the long-distance, high-speed driving common in the United States.

Now, consider Japanese cars today. They’re some of the most reliable cars available. As a result, Japanese cars command high resale values in the U.S. used car market.

Why Japanese Cars Are So Reliable
The durability of Japanese cars is not solely a result of corporate effort. It is deeply influenced by Japan’s unique environment. Japan experiences an array of extreme weather conditions. Summers can reach over 100°F, while the rainy season and typhoons bring heavy rainfall. Winters often plunge below freezing, and road de-icing agents are commonly used to combat snow and ice. These factors test a vehicle's body and parts for corrosion and durability.

To withstand such harsh conditions, Japanese automakers have continuously developed technologies to improve durability and quality. Vehicles that meet these stringent domestic standards perform exceptionally well in other countries with milder climates.

Even luxury European cars, when imported to Japan, sometimes experience increased mechanical issues because they are not adapted to Japan's unique environmental conditions. This highlights how Japan serves as a rigorous testing ground for product durability and reliability.

Beyond Automobiles
What about Japanese products beyond cars? While other industries may not face the same environmental challenges, Japanese consumers' high expectations for quality play a crucial role in shaping the excellence of Japanese goods. Japanese consumers pay close attention to details such as usability, durability, and design, forcing manufacturers to consistently deliver superior products. This consumer culture has significantly contributed to the global reputation of "Made in Japan" as a mark of trust and reliability.

Conclusion
The quality of "Made in Japan" products is a result of a long history of trial and error, adaptation to harsh conditions, and meeting the high standards of discerning consumers. Once dismissed as imitations or low-cost goods, Japanese products are now globally recognized as symbols of quality. Understanding this journey offers a deeper appreciation of the value behind the "Made in Japan" label.

Phishing Mail

thread
I received email from pretending be my company saying that my mailbox is almost full and asked me to clear it. I know this is not from us because we do not have a system like this and another thing is just email is not sent from my company. I clicked on the the link to see where it goes. However, my browser did not allow to open the link. If you receive something like this from anybody, do not open the link or do not reply. If you're really curious, contact your service provider directly, not from the link that they provide. Be careful out there.

We had our Christmas Lunch today at PSPINC, and it was a wonderful time to relax, connect, and celebrate the holiday season together as a team. This year, we enjoyed delicious Italian-American cuisine from Olive Garden, a popular favorite that brought a warm and festive atmosphere to our office.

The spread included a variety of hearty dishes, such as creamy pastas, fresh salads, and their famous breadsticks, which everyone eagerly enjoyed. The comforting flavors and generous portions were perfect for the occasion, making it feel like a special family gathering.

It was not just about the food but also about taking a break from the usual work routine to share laughter, stories, and gratitude with colleagues. Events like these remind us of the importance of camaraderie and building connections within the team.

As we head into the holidays, this lunch was a great way to reflect on the year’s successes, celebrate our hard work, and look forward to the opportunities the new year will bring. It’s moments like these that truly make the season special.

Alaska / Hawaiian Airlines From Seattle to Tokyo/Narita

thread
Alaska / Hawaiian Airlines Fr... Alaska / Hawaiian Airlines Fr...
Alaska Airlines/Hawaiian Airlines will begin flying from Seattle to Tokyo Narita starting May 12, 2025. I checked the inaugural flight availability and business class pricing, and the current cost is either higher or comparable to other carriers like Delta, JAL, and ANA. At this price point, I don’t think I’ll be flying with them. However, I do welcome another carrier in the mix, as it may help reduce overall costs.

It’s surprising that flights from Seattle to Tokyo generally cost more than flights from Los Angeles, San Francisco, or Vancouver.

T&T Market Factoria / Bellevue

thread
T&T Market Factoria / Be... T&T Market Factoria / Be... T&T Market Factoria / Be...
The new Asian supermarket, T&T Supermarket, has opened in Factoria, Bellevue. This Asian supermarket, owned by a Taiwanese Canadian, is based in Canada and operates over 30 stores there. This is their first location in the U.S., and since its opening on December 5, the store has seen constant lines of customers throughout the day.

Today, after my cataract surgery on my left eye, I had a chance to visit the store. I waited in line for about 10 minutes, which wasn’t too bad. Inside, the pre-cooked food area was particularly busy, and I noticed they had some sushi available. I wasn’t sure what to expect from the store, but I found it to be very clean. We bought some pre-cooked food, vegetables, and grapes. While the checkout line appeared long, the store had so many cashiers open that it moved very quickly.

They also offer $0.10 store bags that aren’t plastic but are reusable, which I thought was a great deal. I’ll definitely return once the crowds die down, though I’m not sure when that will be!

thread
Ken Uchikura Newsletter Vol. ...

Then and Now: The Importance of Newsletters and Internet Use for Businesses

I used to write a newsletter titled Weather Report twice a week for 10 years. In one edition, I discussed the prevalence of salarymen in Japan reading manga or magazines on the train. The response from readers was a mix of surprise and curiosity, with many asking, “What’s so strange about that?”

At the time, I wasn’t accustomed to reading manga, so I found it intriguing and somewhat puzzling that adults would spend their commute engrossed in comics. It wasn’t meant as criticism; people are free to use their time as they wish. However, I couldn’t help but feel a little out of step with the idea of reading manga in such a public setting.

Fast forward to today, the scene on public transportation has changed dramatically. Hardly anyone is reading manga or magazines anymore. Instead, most people are glued to their smartphones. Even in social settings, such as dining with friends or colleagues, I often see people focused on their devices. It makes me wonder: What are they looking at? Are they reading digital manga, checking emails, browsing social media, or watching YouTube videos?

Nowadays, much of our information and entertainment doesn’t come from face-to-face conversations but from online content and streaming services. Phrases like “I saw this video on YouTube” or “I read this online” often spark discussions.

This shift highlights the profound change in how we gather information and communicate. For businesses, this evolution underscores the critical role of newsletters and effective internet use.

Information spreads instantaneously, offering countless opportunities to connect with audiences. Newsletters remain a powerful tool for businesses to convey their messages amid the overwhelming flow of information. By speaking directly to customers and partners, businesses can build trust and foster a sense of connection with their brand. Complementing newsletters with social media posts and websites extends their reach and creates more meaningful touchpoints.

As times change and the ways people consume information evolve, businesses must adapt. The ability to leverage newsletters and the internet effectively can significantly influence a company’s success. Embracing change and adopting new tools and strategies is essential for thriving in the modern business landscape.
