Ken Uchikura Newsletter Vol. 293 The Development of the Web Hosting Business

thread
Ken Uchikura Newsletter Vol. ...

The Development of the Web Hosting Business

Web hosting is a service that allows websites and web pages to be published on the internet. Companies providing web hosting services own servers where users' website files are stored, enabling internet users to access these websites.

The first commercial web hosting service appeared in 1993, offering server space and the ability to publish websites on the internet. By 1995, free web hosting services like GeoCities and Tripod emerged, allowing general users to easily create and publish websites. PSPINC has been offering hosting services since 1996.

Development of the Hosting Industry (2000s)
In the early 2000s, dedicated server hosting and Virtual Private Server (VPS) hosting appeared, providing more customization and resources. In 2006, Amazon Web Services (AWS) was introduced, ushering in the era of cloud hosting with scalability, flexibility, and a pay-as-you-go model.

Cloud and Modern Hosting (2010s - Present)
In the 2010s, cloud hosting became mainstream, with major cloud service providers like Google Cloud Platform and Microsoft Azure entering the market. Today, the web hosting market is diverse, offering shared hosting, VPS, dedicated servers, cloud hosting, and managed hosting, among other options. Additionally, CDN (Content Delivery Network) and enhanced security services are common.

The web hosting business has seen significant changes since 2010. Simply renting out server space no longer attracts customers as it used to. Hosting is no longer just a space rental business.

As a result, hosting companies have started providing tools and platforms for website creation alongside their hosting services. This enables users to easily create and manage professional websites. Such service evolution has led to comprehensive website creation platforms like Wix and SquareSpace.

However, the site builder business is also evolving. Even with the tools available to create websites, the demand for users to build their own websites is lower than expected. Many users end up hiring companies or contractors specializing in website creation.

PSPINC also developed and offers a site builder called "Web de Xpress." In addition to site development tools, we provide site creation services, SEO services, online marketing, and e-commerce site creation, helping users have easier access to professional websites.

The hosting business is shifting from simply providing space to offering solutions on how to use that space. PSPINC aims to provide optimal web solutions for our customers, supporting their business growth. This includes a wide range of services, from website design and development to digital marketing strategy, data analysis, cloud-based application development, and more.

Through these services, PSPINC enhances customers' online presence and competitiveness. By continuously adapting to technological advancements, we aim to establish ourselves as leaders in the hosting industry, offering valuable solutions to our customers.

Below is a how PSPINC believes hosting companies can survive the ever-changing market.

Target Niche Markets
Focus on specific niche markets that large cloud service providers cannot fully cover. For example, providing hosting services specialized for certain industries or regions offers unique value.

Excellent Customer Support
Smaller hosting companies can offer more personalized and prompt customer support compared to large providers. Building close relationships with customers and responding quickly and flexibly sets them apart.

Customization and Flexibility
Small to medium-sized hosting companies can offer customized and flexible services to meet specific customer needs. This includes hosting specialized for certain applications or platforms or tailoring to specific security requirements.

Managed Hosting Services
Offering fully managed hosting services frees customers from the complexities of infrastructure management. This includes regular backups, security monitoring, and software updates.

Green Hosting
Providing eco-friendly hosting services appeals to environmentally conscious customers. Utilizing data centers powered by renewable energy or implementing energy-efficient infrastructure can be a differentiator.

Competitive Pricing
Maintaining competitive pricing is crucial. Efficient operations and leveraging economies of scale allow for providing services at prices competitive to that of large providers.

Partnerships and Alliances
Collaborating with other tech companies or service providers to offer comprehensive solutions is also effective. This enables offering multiple services to customers in a one-stop manner.

Education and Support
Implement educational programs that provide customers with best practices and the latest technology information in hosting, helping them build optimal hosting environments for their businesses.

By employing these diverse strategies, we believe it is possible to compete with large cloud providers and thrive in unique markets.

COSTCO GAS

thread
COSTCO GAS COSTCO GAS
I drove about 400 miles since my last fill up. I filled up my car today at Costco and it was about $40. So according to this calculation, the car gets about 10 miles every dollar that I spend on the gas. According to my car, I'm getting 36.7 miles to the gallon. I think that's very good for the size of the car. The car drive is 2024 Toyota crown.

Differenciate

thread
Differenciate
Differentiation

When thinking about the term "differentiation," many people focus on the product. They often consider aspects like having more features or being cheaper. However, differentiation should not be about how the product is consumed but about understanding the customer's feelings. It is essential to communicate that this product has the features that meet their needs. Making customers feel special is crucial. This may be a marketing gimmick, but customers don’t understand the technical details. Differentiation means understanding what the customer needs and recommending the product that fits those needs.

Celebrating Independence Day with a Long Weekend

thread
Celebrating Independence Day w...
Today is Friday, but since yesterday was Independence Day, a holiday, taking today off would result in a four-day weekend. Although I am at the office, some of our staff are taking advantage of this opportunity to enjoy a longer break. I have no issue with that. For those who have made the effort to come in today, I brought donuts from Krispy Kreme to the office as a small token of appreciation.

Embracing Our Roots: The Journey from Double-Byte Specialists to Modern-Day Innovators

Embracing Our Roots: The Jou...
Embracing Our Roots: The Journey from Double-Byte Specialists to Modern-Day Innovators

Back in the 90s, PSPINC was widely recognized for our expertise as double-byte specialists. Our core mission was to create and assist in the development of Japanese language and culturally localized software. This foundation, deeply rooted in understanding and catering to the nuances of the Japanese market, set us apart in the industry.

 The Origins: Double-Byte Specialization

During the early days of computing, handling double-byte character sets was a significant challenge. Languages such as Japanese, which use complex characters, required specialized knowledge and technical skill to ensure proper display and functionality in software applications. PSPINC excelled in this area, providing solutions that enabled US companies to seamlessly enter and thrive in the Japanese market. Our focus on linguistic and cultural localization helped bridge the gap between different markets, fostering better communication and business opportunities.

 Transition to the Internet Age

As technology evolved and the internet became a dominant force, the landscape of software development transformed dramatically. The emphasis shifted from standalone software applications to web-based solutions. Despite these changes, the core need for cultural and linguistic localization remained relevant. Websites and online services still required adjustments to resonate with Japanese users, ensuring that cultural subtleties and language intricacies were accurately represented.

The Continued Relevance of Cultural Localization

Today, the need for culturally sensitive and linguistically accurate software and websites is as pertinent as ever. While the term "double-byte enablement" might not be as commonly discussed, the principles behind it continue to drive our work. At PSPINC, we remain committed to our roots, leveraging our deep understanding of Japanese culture and language to help businesses succeed in this unique market.

 Modern-Day PSPINC: A Unique Expertise

In the current digital age, PSPINC stands out as one of the few companies in the US that specializes in Japanese cultural and linguistic localization. Our experience and dedication to this niche market enable us to provide unparalleled services to our clients. Whether it's developing bilingual websites, offering email marketing solutions like NewsMail, or integrating the latest web technologies, our focus on cultural relevance ensures that our clients can effectively connect with their target audience.

 Conclusion: Honoring Our Heritage

As we move forward, we continue to honor our heritage by embracing the principles that have guided us since our inception. By staying true to our mission of bridging cultural and linguistic gaps, we help businesses navigate the complexities of the Japanese market. Our journey from double-byte specialists to modern-day innovators is a testament to our adaptability and unwavering commitment to excellence.

At PSPINC, we are proud of our past and excited for the future. As we embark on new ventures and embrace emerging technologies, we remain dedicated to our core values, ensuring that our clients receive the best possible solutions tailored to their specific needs.

Ken Uchikura Newsletter Vol. 292 Generational Gaps

thread
Ken Uchikura Newsletter Vol. ...

Generational Gaps

When you look at media consumption behavior, I feel like there are three distinct generations in today’s society. The younger generation primarily obtains information through smartphones, rather than through television or computers. Those in their 30s to early 60s are not as focused on television or smartphones but still rely heavily on computers. As for the elderly, it’s clear that they mostly obtain information through television, rather than smartphones or computers.

Newspapers, like television, are a medium that primarily provides information to the older generation. From this perspective, it seems that the market for television and newspapers is gradually shrinking. However, in Japan, the population proportion of the elderly is higher due to lowering birth rates. As a result, the influence of television and newspapers remains strong compared to countries with a larger young population.

Currently, the Tokyo gubernatorial election is taking place in Japan, with nearly 50 candidates running. However, based on television coverage, it appears that only incumbent Governor Yuriko Koike and Parliament member Renho Saito are running. This gives the impression that the media is steering public perception to suggest that only these two have a chance of winning, which is disappointing. I’m not saying there’s a problem with these two candidates, it is just unfortunate that we don’t hear more about the other candidates.

We have often discussed the importance of websites, but there are limitations when it comes to disseminating information to the elderly. Accessing a website requires digital devices such as computers or smartphones, which are not widely used by the elderly. This issue is particularly pronounced in Japan, compared to other countries, due to its aging population. Therefore, I feel like there is still much room for growth in Japan's digital media promotion activities.
