Ken Uchikura Newsletter Vol. 256 Listen to Others

thread
Ken Uchikura Newsletter Vol. ...

Listen to Others

Today, a business executive coach gave a speech at the Seattle Executive meeting on listening to others. This talk got me thinking about whether I’m really listening to others and what to think about when I listen carefully.

We all find it difficult to focus on things we’re not interested in. In this discussion, I’ll assume you’re interested in what the other person is saying. First, when you listen to what someone’s saying, you’ll naturally try to understand what meaning he or she is trying to convey. If I don’t understand what the other person is saying, I may say, "I’m sorry, but I don’t understand”. It doesn’t mean the other person's way of speaking is bad, but my response assumes that my comprehension is not up to par.

When I can understand what the other person says to a certain extent, I tend to think about the motive behind the other person's words. This is called "reading between the lines" in English. We believe understanding the purpose behind someone’s words will make it easier to respond appropriately.

The speech also mentioned that careful observation of not only auditory cues but also visual cues like nodding and people’s overall demeanor when listening makes others more comfortable speaking. I found these tips instructive and will consider these factors in conjunction with my own thinking. What points do you pay attention to when listening to others? I’ve realized that I try to avoid distractions. It’s important to be attentive and listen carefully. Unfortunately, I get bored easily, so this is quite a challenge for me.

I traveled from Seattle to Osaka, beginning my journey at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport. The first leg of my trip was a 9-hour and 57-minute flight to Tokyo Haneda Airport. From there, I took an ANA domestic flight to Itami Airport in Osaka. In total, the journey took over 14 hours, including the transit.

Upon arrival, I safely reached my parents' home. I plan to spend a few days with them before heading to Tokyo for business purposes.

Quality Control

thread
Quality Control
In a conversation with Coach Sato, who came from Japan, I was asked what I thought was the biggest difference between Japan and the United States. I answered that it was the level of service, and today I will explain that a bit further.

In Japan, when you go to any kind of shop or place, you can generally expect to receive a certain level of service. This is partly because of the strict adherence to manuals and procedures. On the other hand, in the United States, the level of service can vary significantly. It depends on the management and the people working there. If you go to a good place, you can naturally expect excellent service, but on the flip side, there are also places with poor service, making it challenging to make judgments.

In Japan, because service levels are so strictly manualized, you won't typically receive service that's below that standard, but you also won't receive service that goes above it. Going beyond the manual can sometimes result in a negative evaluation. While customers may appreciate it, the company's perspective is that exceeding the manual is not allowed.

This principle doesn't just apply to service but also to products. Japanese products are often praised for their quality, which is true. However, when issues arise, the response can be quite challenging. In the American context, the product quality may not be as high, but products are designed with the expectation of potential issues, making repairs easier. The choice between creating a product that won't break in the first place and one that can be easily fixed when it does break is a difficult one.

In essence, Japan may be seen as a country that struggles with handling exceptions, while in the United States, dealing with exceptions is the norm. This is why they design products with easy repairability in mind. Which approach do you think is better? We'd like to hear your opinions.

A TOYOTA CROWN LIMITED

thread
A TOYOTA CROWN LIMITED
I purchased a brand-new car last Friday, and it's a Toyota Crown. The Toyota Crown has been the flagship model of the Toyota Motor Corporation in Japan for a long time. Of course, Toyota also has the luxury brand Lexus. The Crown was available in the United States as far back as 1972, which predates my arrival in the country. Toyota reintroduced the Crown from Japan to the United States just this year. I was drawn to its new design and the fact that it's a hybrid, promising better fuel efficiency.

After driving it for a few days, I've come to appreciate that this car is exceptionally well-made. However, it lacks the exhilarating and enjoyable driving experience that I was hoping for. There's nothing inherently wrong with the car; in fact, it behaves impeccably, much like a well-behaved child—good, but not particularly exciting. It serves its purpose as reliable transportation, and it certainly boasts an appealing, sleek appearance while delivering a quiet and fuel-efficient ride. There's absolutely nothing wrong with it, but it doesn't have that "wow" factor that makes driving it a thrilling experience.

Perhaps if it had a V8 engine, it would provide the excitement I desire, but that would go against the eco-friendly nature of the car. If I'm looking for a more thrilling ride, I'll have to turn to a Ford Mustang Mach-E which may wife drives.
