Listen to Others

Today, a business executive coach gave a speech at the Seattle Executive meeting on listening to others. This talk got me thinking about whether I’m really listening to others and what to think about when I listen carefully.

We all find it difficult to focus on things we’re not interested in. In this discussion, I’ll assume you’re interested in what the other person is saying. First, when you listen to what someone’s saying, you’ll naturally try to understand what meaning he or she is trying to convey. If I don’t understand what the other person is saying, I may say, "I’m sorry, but I don’t understand”. It doesn’t mean the other person's way of speaking is bad, but my response assumes that my comprehension is not up to par.

When I can understand what the other person says to a certain extent, I tend to think about the motive behind the other person's words. This is called "reading between the lines" in English. We believe understanding the purpose behind someone’s words will make it easier to respond appropriately.

The speech also mentioned that careful observation of not only auditory cues but also visual cues like nodding and people’s overall demeanor when listening makes others more comfortable speaking. I found these tips instructive and will consider these factors in conjunction with my own thinking. What points do you pay attention to when listening to others? I’ve realized that I try to avoid distractions. It’s important to be attentive and listen carefully. Unfortunately, I get bored easily, so this is quite a challenge for me.
