Last weekend I watched the original (1986) 'Top Gun' on TV with my kids. My first son really enjoyed it, so I might take him to see the new sequel, 'Top Gun: Maverick' at the cinema. I hear it`s good. I haven`t been to the cinema for ages*.
Although I enjoyed seeing Top Gun again, now I have the song, “Danger Zone” stuck in my head. lol
Vocabulary:
- for/in ages = a long time. (このフレーズでは、age = 時代, ages = 長い間(時代) )
Recently my kids watched the movies Charlie & the Chocolate Factory, and Toy Story 2. I was surprised that they both contained references to the famous 1968 movie, 2001: A Space Odyssey, so I said to my kids, “Let`s watch it – it`s interesting.” My sons liked it, but my daughter was bored & confused.
Grammar:
- I was bored/confused/interested
- The movie was boring/confusing/interesting
I watched this 1958 UFO movie with my kids. It was pretty funny, especially the dated (古風な /その時代を物語る) special effects & costumes.
Pronunciation:
- In English, UFO is pronounced 'ユーエフオー’ (not ユーフオー)
A student told me her favourite movie was 1959`s 'The Apartment'. I said I didn`t know it, so next class, she lent me her DVD copy. I expected a light-hearted romantic comedy, but the story was sometimes a little dark. However, it was interesting to see scenes & fashions of New York at that time, & I was surprised that I recognized a few of the actors from TV shows I watched as a young child.
Grammar:
OK: 誰か told 誰か 『__』e.g. She told me it was good.
OK: 誰か said『__』e.g. I said it was good.
WRONG: 誰か said 誰か 『__』e.g. He said me it was good.
OK (but not common) : 誰か said to 誰か『__』 I said to him it was good.
Over* the New Year holidays, I watched the movie 'E.T. - The Extra-Terrestrial**' with my kids. I think I last watched it over*** 35 years ago. Even though it`s pretty old, my kids really liked it.
Did you know that there was an extra**** scene for the movie that featured Harrison Ford (Han Solo from Star Wars)? However it wasn`t included in the final version of the movie.
Vocabulary:
- *over = during
- ***over = more than
- **extra = outside, terrestrial = earth
- ****extra = more than necessary
I`m not usually a fan of romance movies, but I like this movie, set in Venice & starring Katherine Hepburn (not Audrey). One reason is that everyone is dressed so stylishly (stylish = お洒落). The men wear nice suits & the women wear chic, elegant dresses. Of course, the scenery & buildings are also beautiful. Another reason is the bitter-sweet (楽しくも複雑な?) ending, which features a steam train. I like steam trains.
If you get a chance, please watch it.
Vocabulary:
- dress (動詞) = put on clothes
- dress up (動詞) = wear special, nice clothes
- dress (名詞) = ドレス ( ワンピース は英語ではない)
- chic = シック, 粋 (だから栄名古屋で「ラシック LA CHIC」と言うのファッション店があります)

Have you seen the new Star Wars movie? A couple of weeks ago I saw it with my two sons & a couple of friends. I enjoyed it, though my youngest son got restless (もぞもぞ) after a while (the movie is over 2 hours).
When I was a kid, my father took me & my younger brother to see `Star Wars - Return of the Jedi`, so I was happy for the chance to take my own sons to see a Star Wars movie too.
Vocabulary:
- "a couple" = one boy & one girl, BUT "a couple of ___s" = about two or maybe three ___s. It`s not exact.
Today I heard that Ken Takakura passed away (passed away = died). I`ve mentioned him on my blog a couple of times:

He`s my favourite Japanese actor, so I`m sad, but I`m glad he made so many entertaining movies. I think I`ll watch one this weekend.
Rest in Peace, Ken-san.
