A Bagful of... What!?

thread
A Bagful of... What!?
The Biwa beach that I visited was pretty empty - just a handful of people were there, walking their dogs, or sitting on benches. A couple were beachcombing, like me, but I don`t think they were collecting what I collected - walnuts & water chestnut seed pods*. I had an idea, so I gathered a bagful of them. What do you think I`m going to make? Hint: Next month is December. The answer is in comments.

Mystery Mihama Mountain Mushrooms

thread
Mystery Mihama Mountain Mus...
After camping one night in Wakasa-Wada, I packed up & went by train to Mihama, where there is a mountain that I hiked up several years ago. That time, I saw wild deer & wild boar (イノシシ), but this time, I only saw some wild... mushrooms. I don`t know much about mushrooms, so I can`t tell you what kind they are. Do you know?

Anyway, so I didn`t see any wildlife, but the view from the top of the mountain was nice. As you can see, the side facing the sea is very steep, so although I wanted to explore the beach, I didn`t want to climb down.

Vocabulary:
- HIKE UP a mountain: walking on a path, not using hands
- CLIMB a mountain: very steep, using hands, maybe special equipment e.g. carabiners, ropes, etc.
- 岐阜の金華山での「ハイキング」は『hike up』を使った方がいい

Rowboats to Rent? Or to Borrow...?

thread
Rowboats to Rent? Or to Borro...
In this picture of Wakamiya Beach you can see a row (列) of row (コグ) boats on the right. I guess you can rent them during the summer. But how about late autumn? I didn`t see anybody around to ask. Maybe I could just quietly borrow one for a little while and nobody would mind... Haha, but not this time. As you can see by the length of my shadow (影), it was getting late, so after taking this photo, I headed back to the campsite.

Vocabulary
- rent = 借りる (+ pay money)
- borrow = 借りる (free)
- Be careful: rental: 形容詞. rent/rented: 動詞

Still Violinin`

thread
Still Violinin`
At the other end of the beach where I camped, there`s a nice park with a unique view. I took this photo there, then I noticed a sound... someone was playing a violin... playing a violin badly... Haha - I think it was the same guy I heard when I came here last year: https://jp.bloguru.com/otto/posts/2019/11/15 I`m glad he hasn`t given up. It must be a hobby that he really likes. Or his music teacher is very strict (厳しい )?

Grammar
- ____の場所 = [place] where ___
- ____の人 = [person] who/that ___
- ____の物 = [thing] which/that ___

Wakasa-Wada Camping

thread
Wakasa-Wada Camping
Last week I went camping in Fukui. I arrived in Wakasa-Wada around midday, set up my tent, then went beachcombing. My main target was fishing floats. As you can see, I managed to (= tried & could) find several, so I was satisfied. I was also pleased with the weather - mainly sunny, with some clouds. Another good point was that the campsite was almost empty - in Japan, people mainly camp in summer only.

Grammar:
- Be careful: 'main' is 形容詞, 'mainly' is 副詞, so 'My main purpose...' OK, but 'The mainly reason...' WRONG

Old Otsu Town Hall

thread
Old Otsu Town Hall
In Otsu we had lunch in this old building – it`s the old Otsu Town Hall (旧大津公会堂), built in 1934. I like* old buildings like** this. I`d like to know more about it, but there isn`t much information about it in English online.

By the way, can you see the black cars in the old photograph? They look a little like the 1936 Toyoda model aa, which I saw at the Toyota Museum in Nagoya. However, I`m pretty sure the one on the right is a 1934 Chevrolet master series DA. I`d like a car like that!

Vocabulary:
*like = 好き
**like = 〜ような
`d like to + 動詞 =〜(動詞)し たい
`d like + 名詞 = (名詞)がほしい

End of Year Shrine Visit

thread
End of Year Shrine Visit
Happy New Year! On the last day of 2019, I went to Ise Shrine in Mie with my family & my wife`s relatives (親戚). After visiting the shrine, we walked along Oharai-machi for a while*, then ate udon noodles at a shop called ふくすけ. It took a while** to be served, because there were a lot of customers. After that, while*** the others were watching a taiko drum performance, I bought a couple of postcards at my favourite postcard shop, 徳力富吉郎版画館. I sent one to my parents & the other to my brother.

Vocabulary
* for a while = 暫く

Maizuru Red Brick Park

thread
Maizuru Red Brick Park
I`ve visited old red brick buildings in Handa & Tsuruga, but this collection of buildings in Maizuru is much bigger. It was interesting - I like these kinds of places. Also, because Maizuru is a JMSDF (Japan Marine Self-Defense Force) port, you can see their ships nearby. If you`re into that kind of thing, you should visit Maizuru.

Vocabulary
- What kind of...? = どんな...?

Ise Shrine & Oharai-machi

thread
Ise Shrine & Oharai-machi
Happy New Year! I didn`t blog during my New Year holiday, but this week I`ll blog about what I did.

On December 31st I went to Ise shrine in Mie Prefecture with my family & my wife`s sister`s family. After visiting the shrine, we walked around Oharai-machi. I don`t usually drink sake, but my wife`s sister & her husband made me drink sake with them at a sake counter bar, then we all watched a taiko drum performance, ate beef croquettes, & looked at some shops. Even though it`s winter, my kids wanted to eat ice cream. It`s holidays, so we let them. Strange kids.

Vocabulary:
- make + 誰か + 動詞 = 誰かに好きではない事をさせる(強制的な感じ)
- let + 誰か + 動詞 = 誰かに好きな事をさせる(させてあげる感じ)

Zoo Trip

thread
Zoo Trip
On Sunday, school staff & students visited Higashiyama zoo in Nagoya. It was a nice day - a little cloudy so not hot. The 6 girls in my group were well-behaved & enjoyed looking at the animals & hearing my interesting animal facts e.g. that hippos are the most dangerous African animal (did you know that?). The most popular animals seemed to be the koalas - it was a little crowded there.

Vocabulary:
Be careful: cloudy = 曇り crowded = 込んでいる
